Just thought i would make a few comments about what i saw during today's game and would like to hear what you all have to say as well...
- the first team offense looked pretty good, especially if you take into account that they have only had about a week of camp leading up to this game
the play calling hasnt changed much, a lot of tight end dumps and wide receiver screens and curls, but they were effective for the most part
-alge looked solid today, and i have high hopes for nate washington after i saw him go across the field, leaving his defender in the dust and catching a ball for a 10-15 yard gain, we havent really had a receiver that can get much separation and i think he can be that guy for us
- the offensive line and cj didnt start off too well, he was hit in the backfield in his first 3 runs, but it looked like they just started to get things going on the first team's final drive where lendale took it in for the score
- defensively, its hard to judge too much the first team cuz all i saw were a few completions to owens and a slip by nick harper that allowed a catch, but the pick by griffin was nice and vickerson definitely was haynesworth-like on that play, pushing his defender into the qb forcing an inaccurate pass
- WAY too many penalties, though its somewhat reassuring that there were nowhere near as many during the first quarter when most of our starters were in, but im sure fish, dinger, and cecil will get that straightened out
-great play by mccourty on the interception, great read, looked like he may have that ball-hawk instinct that griff has
-vince young was much less than impressive in his first 2 or 3 drives, especially that horrific interception on a pass intended for hawk, regardless of whether he ran the wrong route, u dont throw a lollipop like that in the nfl and expect to be a good quarterback
however, the throw and catch to paul williams for the td was a thing of beauty, and that scoring drive was solid
i am looking forward to his next game to evaluate his progression further, and definitely acknowledge that he was backed up to his own endzone for a few of his drives, but thats part of being a good quarterback - move the chains and get the ball out of there
-vickerson and birdine both impressed me with their motors, but i hope that they can control their passion and avoid stupid penalties
- cook looked pretty good on his few touches and i definitely cant wait to see britt out there
