Pretty good (and long) article about the past, present, and future of this franchise based on their ticket issues.

Maybe from an attendance standpoint, but that's all. They have had a lot more success than the Grizzlies (who can't even win a playoff game, much less a series).

Best part of the article:
In the fifth season of their existence, 1999, the Jaguars fashioned the NFL's best regular-season record, 14-2. But they lost to the Tennessee Titans in the AFC title game and began a slow descent.
"Sometimes," Huyghue noted, "you can be too good too early. There's only one way to go -- down."

Thank goodness. If Memphis had the expansion team, the Oilers are probably in Jacksonville today (wouldn't that be ironic?).

I got blasted on the TOMB when I said that I like that name. Even got blamed for stereotyping. As a coon hunter I still like it and proud of it dog gone it. :p

Personally, I'm just glad their in Nashville cus it's only 2 hours from my home town, Memphis is like 4-5 hours.

I don't believe the Titans would have been as successful a brand in Memphis as they are in Nashville. There are many Titans fans in East Tennessee and Southwest Virginia (Bristol area, etc). I know some who even travel to games. Having the team in the geographic center of the state makes those fans feel they have a stake in a "Tennessee" team as it's not a major road trip to visit Nashville. However, Memphis feels like a world away figuratively and literally.

at the same time tho, you would have alot of fans in arkansas, southern missouri, and northern mississippi who would say they would have a stake in a tennessee team in memphis.

Maybe it would have been better to say that I don't believe the Titans would be as strong a brand in Tennessee. As it stands now, the Titans pull a fan base from all over the state - east to west. Part of the reason for that success is due to their central location in the state.
I believe if the Grizzlies could somehow win an NBA Championship, they would still get little support from the state. That may be an apple and oranges comparison though as the Grizzlies are a miserable team and are marketed so poorly in general.
