When he wanted to get tough on player conduct, I thought he did a pretty good job. I was supportive of him then, though I wonder if he made the NFL better or worse by making all the illegal activity of players so public.
But now, he seems to be one of the scariest commishs I have seen. Here are my major issues:
1. New labor deal - Where/when are the discussions? Do you really want a year without a salary cap, much less a lockout a year later? Get something going, please!
2. International play - It's been nice, but rather than expand it, let's get rid of it altogether. And get the idea of a London team out of your head! It won't work.
3. Expanding number of games - Isn't 16 games long enough? I know 4 preseason games are long, but expanding the schedule just opens up so many cans of worms with who to schedule, players salaries, and diluting regular season games.
4. Fines - Way out of hand. I wasn't happy with Bud's fine, but the players' fines are crazy. Every 15 yard penalty, intentional or not, correctly called or not, results in a fine. And then there are fines on plays where there wasn't a penalty. I feel like the refs should have a credit card swiping machine on their belt so they can just ring the player up when they throw a flag.
5. NFL Fan Code of Conduct - Good idea, bad implementation.
Who is running the show? Are the owners encouraging Goodell to act like this? If not, can they do something about him?

Here is how I see each point you had.
1. I'm pretty sure nobody could do anything to avoid what is going to happen. The Union is under new leadership and they want to show they can get their players what they want. The owners weren't ever going to cave from their positions. They want what they want and they will fight tooth and nail before they give in to any demands made by the players.
There is also still plenty of time left to get a deal done and right down towards the end of deals is when almost all new contract negotiations between owners and unions get settled.
2. As a fan of the NFL but more importantly as a fan that doesn't live near an NFL team I am perfectly fine with playing games in London. The atmosphere is completely different from what we are used to seeing which in turn adds a little more intrigue into that game.
I'm not losing out on going to a game because I can't go to the games anyways. Losing one home game every so many years isn't something that makes any difference to me.
3. I'm against expanding the regular season. I don't see it happening either though. I see this as more of a bargaining chip to be used in the new CBA negotiations.
4. Meh. Who am I to care about how much money some rich guy loses due to him doing something he shouldn't have been doing?
5. I can't really comment on this.

1. New labor deal -The commissioner in sports is always the voice of ownership. After all, they do vote him in. I think on this subject he's doing the bidding exactly as the 32 owners want him to be.
2. International play - Seems to be one of his pet projects that needs to go away. Though I'm not sure the owners are going to want to eliminate this if it is generating more revenue.
3. Expanding number of games - The physical toll of 16 games plus 4 preseason is too much. Frankly, the players' overall health would be better served by going back to a 14-game schedule. But I know that day is never coming back. Don't expect to see 17 or 18 game seasons. The players won't go for it.
4. Fines - Just like our society which is stuck in politically correct namby pambyness, the NFL is too busy protecting its "image" with its fines for wrong color socks, untucked shirts, non-endorsed cleats, etc. Fining every hit that was 1/100 of one percent against perfect technique is completely absurd.
5. NFL Fan Code of Conduct - A.K.A. "The Anti-Fun Police."

the owners dont agree so there has to be strong voice who can get them to compromise and work together.
i do suspect the fines are coming up within the cba talks.

The owners. You have to wonder if Bud is interested. ;)

I think you raise some good points 309. IJDK how I feel about Goodell right now. I am worried about labor negotiations but I'm not sure De Smith is doing that great a job either. I do agree with you about the fines being excessive at times and they seem to be somewhat erratic too. The fan conduct policy definitely needs some tweaking. I'm against overseas play and expanding the number of games.

He scares me more than Goodell. The whole "the franchises are worth more now" argument doesn't really apply to the labor deal. And he is against a rookie cap.

That's what happens when you bring in someone from the outside. IMO

I'm sympathetic with the idea of an international game of some sort, but there doesn't seem a practical way of implementing it. My dad went to the Pats/Bucs game this year, enjoyed it, was happy to be able to get a ticket (he hasn't been able to the last two times around), etc. but also said that there wasn't the intensity that you find at home games (mind you, his last home game was in the 'house of pain'). The only way a London or farther afield team would work would be to stretch out the season to accommodate travel both for the team and for teams they have to play.
And as much as I'd love football to go year round, I think that much longer than 16 weeks and we might be seeing more health issues.
Never liked Goodell; I don't think his administration deals with issues equitably...

The new president of the NFL players is a VERY strong willed guy. Sorry, but I should have Googled his name. I saw an interview with him on HBO's/Brian Gumbell's, Real Sports. He is articulate, driven and highly intelligent. He is more than capable of holding his own against the owners and Roger G . International play is bulls***, why even bother? A London franchise is an absurd idea. I'm all for an 18 game season. Pre-season is ridiculous, with mini-camps throughout the off-season. As far as fines are concerned, I would make it mandatory for a player to be penalized at the time of the infraction, or no fine. Do you honestly think a guy making 4 million a year gives a s*** about a $7,500 fine ? No way, you either hit them with a couple of hundred grand, or you're accomplishing NOTHING. As far as the fans are concerned, I agree with your statement. In closing, it is my opinion that Goodell is a VERY good NFL commish.....He makes his predecessors seem like incompetent fools. Let's put it this way, he's no Bud Selig !
