View Full Version : Why would anyone want an 18 game season?

I still get amazed that the NFL would even consider increasing the NFL season to 17 or 18 games. You can just look at this season, and see the reasons to keep it the way it is.

1. Injuries - The Titans already have at least 4 players done for the year, and I am sure most teams have some as well. The longer the season goes, the more injuries are a bigger factor than the talent of the teams. There is still potentially 4 playoff games left for a team as well.

2. Excitement - With two games left, there are still 10 teams in the AFC fighting for 4 spots. I am not sure how you get more excitement than that.

3. Mercy - With two games left there are 10 teams with 5 wins or less. Even the crowds at Titans games are thinning out in cold weather. Do we really need to see more half-empty stadiums for meaningless games?

Let's keep the schedule at 16 regular season games. That is plenty, and it makes the most sense.

I agree with you on not expanding the schedule, but they do need to do something about ticket holders paying full price for a meaningless preseason game.

Yea, I agree. It's a terrible idea.

I'm pretty sure Goodell has answers to those issues already prepared. They would probably go something like this...

1. Injuries: That could be a real concern when extending the number of regular season games. As many are aware, the league has been very proactive in initiatives aimed to reduce player injury. As such, we feel a tranformation is necassary before extending the regular season schedule. We will unveil the new schedule at the same time we unveil the new league logo for the National Flag Football League!

2. Excitement: The League is not concerned about decreased US fan excitement as all additional games will be held overseas. Including the first ever Thanksgiving day game to be held in Turkey!

3. Mercy: The League understands that prolonging the season will only add to the depression of the teams with no playoff hopes. That is why the League is initiating a Biggest Loser Challenge. The team with the worst record will now be awarded the first 5 selections in the upcoming draft. With this new Loser catagory, we expect a lot of excitement toward the end of the season when the bottom ranked teams battle it out to see who can lose worse!

The only reason 18 makes sense is if you drop 2 preseason games, extend camps one week and do intra-squad scrimmages the last week for evaluation purposes and expand the rosters for the regular season to at least 50 active players and probably add two more to the inactive group taking the squad size to 55. But even with all that, I think the game is just too brutal to have these guys playing at full tilt 18 times before the playoffs even start. But money is what drives this discussion, so don't expect the best interests of players to have a decisive role in the final decision.

The only thing that I would agree is to push the Super Bowl to Presidents Day so it's a 3 day weekend.

Starting 0-6 wouldn't be such a deep hole with 18 games. More time to heal those injuries as well

More time to get more injuries too.

What they need to do is take away the playoffs and add the two games. Then they can have voters like they do in college.

Shhhhhhhhhh, don't let anybody hear you say that. If the NFL could make more money that way, they might do it.

too me injuries are a huge issues.
especially considering not jut the overall health of the players (most important) but think of the lessened quality of the playoffs if a lot of major names are missing.

The only reason the NFL wants an 18 game season is the same reason the BCS doesnt want a playoff.

The NFL gets away with robbery for making us season ticket holders pay full price for preseason games every year.

I honestly would rather pay full price for a preseason game in August when football is fresh on my mind and the weather is warm, then pay full price for a game in January in a freezing cold stadium if my team is way out of the playoff hunt.

I like preseason Titans games. Having 5 this year can be a burden on some fans, but I think they really helped Vince get ready for season.
