View Full Version : Mike Keith robbed twice of 2,000 yard call

Listened today while traveling. Mike Keith was in the midst of a brilliant call that would have been replayed everywhere on a 62-yard touchdown run to put CJ over 2,000. Then Hoculi interrupted.
As it turned out, he actually got positive yards as the penalty made it 2nd and 6. Mike is now trying to award him the 2,000 on a subsequent carry when he stops and says "I need to check on that" and Mike knows he's over but wants to be sure.
So he asks what the rule is - and says "do his positive rushing yards count before the penalty?" Larry Stone breaks in with a grumpy, very quick "No" and Mike continues confused as the Titans punt.
Seconds after the punt, Mike says there is a discrepancy and CJ is actually over the mark.
I really enjoy Titans radio. I also know the moment was brutally disappointing. But in an age of automated stat programs that every major media outlet uses, this was a terrible mistake.
First, shame on Hoculi for robbing us once. Secondly, shame on Larry Stone or a statistician for robbing us twice. And I'm sorry the best announcer in football had to tell the result as a "whoopsie" afterthought.
Just ranting.

Well whoever their spotters and stat boys are likely caused the screw up.

Well, I don't have a previous beef with Larry Stone but he was awful quick to make the call when Keith asked, so I place it first on him. It's hard to screw up the spot on an automated system because to get 2nd and 6 with a 10-yard penalty means they would have had to give him a positive yardage spot before the penalty was assessed, otherwise the system would have kicked it out for improper yardage (I'm experienced with them).
Also can't figure out why Frank didn't know the answer.
Television, of course, had it right on the money and he got the mark two carries later, which is when Keith THOUGHT he had it but stopped.

I have always hated Ed Hochuli as a ref. In my opinion he is one of the worst officials in all of sports and enjoys his face time way too much. And believe me, you don't even want to play Dallas in a game he's officiating. You know you're about to get screwed when you step off the team bus at the stadium. Way to screw history on a lousy call you piece of @#$@^!

I agree TGB. I think he's terrible and he always screws the Titans when he calls our games.

I've always loved/hated Hochuli because he equally nitpicks every team. Still, as soon as I saw him on the screen I said "we're screwed!"

At least we got the Nate catch and the final TD calls. I think they were both right, but man, were they close... :ohmy

Nate's was really close, but I agree they got it right. The holding call on Hall was nit-picky but it certainly was a hold after seeing it again. Hall needed to release a split second earlier. The sad part was that CJ was already past the defender when the hold occured.

^ and it was VERY obvious he was at leasat 2-3 yards PAST the hold when the hold did happen, thus my opinion of a BS call.

He was more than 2-3 yards past, it was barely a hold and should never be called. Guys are allowed to get inside a guy and grab hold, if a guy suddenly decides to turn around you can't just let go. That should of been a no call and Ed should be seriously reprimanded for royally screwin that one up but as we all know, these refs have no accountability and just call whatever they want.

There weren't that many penalties called and the ones that were called looked legit. Hell, it even looked like we got away with running into their kicker on their first or second punt. Seeing the big run by CJ get called back sucked but I knew it was coming. I saw the flag fly when CJ was still close to the line so I never even started to completely cheer.

I said the same thing. Told them at work, we NEVER have a good game when he's the ref.

I don't hate Hochuli, but I agree that he is over-zealous as a ref. I'm more inclined, since I know nothing about him, to think that he wants to do a good job. Some people are like that. They think doing a good job means no grey areas.

Has anyone heard Chris Johnson's response today? He basically came out and said that Hochuli was a Dickerson fan and robbed him of history.
