we need to have the "playoff" mentality from the get-go. What i mean is like we build certain regular season games up to be huge and unlosable and what-not. Like we HAVE to win these games and we put them up on a huge pedistal. But a team like Pittsburgh just plays the regular season to get themselves ready for post-season. sure their division games are critical to them, but i dont think they were overly concerned with Home-Field like we were. They had that mentality of staying pretty even Keel throughout the season, even if it meant losing a few games. Then when they faced San Diego in the playoffs they were just ready to explode, which they did. We have not been a good bye week team in the playoffs...won once against Pitt i believe (we had 4 turnovers)...We always set these goals like A) Win the division B) get a Homefield game C) Win the Super Bowl

and when you accomplish the first two its like a "slight" feeling of accomplishment and i believe can lead to a dropoff even if its slight. Now I realize that our hopes and dreams changed as the record cruised to 10-0, but i think we need to have 1 and 1 goal only this year, and thats win the Super Bowl....If we dont win the division, then fine. If we have to be a wild-card team then so be it, if we are 15-1 then there is NO sense of accomplishment because we havent achieved a single goal. Just some thoughts i had. im probably :crazy

Hello all this is my first time posting and was a long time reader of the TOMB and was sad and surprised when it disappeared with the restructuring of the homepage but was excited when PK talked about this place in his blog!

Anyways, I just wanted to say I definitely agree with the OP. The Titans and Steelers for all intents and purposes are the same team. Sturdy head coach situations, run/defense oriented, etc. However, the big difference between the two is our history of the playoffs. The Steelers have won championships and we have only had disappointment. I honestly believe the SuperBowl against the Rams, the recent Chargers game and other disappointments have changed this team's mindset when in the post season.

Yes, most of the players from that time have retired or moved but I still think the franchise mentality stays. We are on the brink and have the talent in place, but we need that playoff win to give that confidence that we can get it done. The Steelers from rookies to veterans know they are on a team that has been there and done that and that gives them the swagger to get things done in crunch time.

We can all agree we got hosed on many calls in the Ravens game with the safety and the delay of game and whatnot, but what killed us was the fumbles and stupid mistakes from our own guys. They need to be more focused and I honestly think with the tough beginning of the schedule for our guys they will be. We'll probably finish 10-6 this season or close and that will give us just the mentality we need heading into the playoffs. We love the underdog role and play well with a chip on our shoulders. With CJ healthy and a decent contribution from Nate Washington and whoever we draft at WR I think this can team can still beat anyone on any given Sunday with or without Fat Albert.

I hope this wasn't too long, this is my first post on a message board haha.

GO TITANS!!

i always get stuck between a rock and a hard place...i WANT to be the favorite just so we can have homefield and i get to GO to the games BUT i guess since we play better as the dog i could survive...however i will always want to be the top seed because regardless of what the stats say the 1 seed always gives you the best shot. If the playoffs were replayed 20 times i say we get to the SB between 12-15 times. But if we were the 5th seed we may only get there 3-5 times. Last year and 2000 just happened to fall in the 16-20 range.

Great and objective post. Glad you found the board, and welcome.

I agree in many points you mention, and specially the one where we were hosed by the referees against Baltimore. We deserve better referees, specially when we get to be the best team all season long.

I agree, it was definitely nice going in as the #1 seed and being able to talk trash. But as you said earlier, that maybe gave some of the guys that feeling of accomplishment that took the edge off. I also agree that we beat the ravens more often than not if we played them multiple times. I still get mad anytime I talk about last year because we showed so much promise and it was taken away by both things within and out of our control.

Besides wheres the fun in beating the tar out of a team if everyone thinks you will? :) It is much more satisfying beating someone we "shouldn't" ( ie: The Steelers in the reg. season) than it is rolling over a team we are supposed to beat.

By no means am I saying I hope we don't kick the snot out of everyone, I am just mirroring your desire to win in the playoffs when it counts rather than get the 10-0 run and do nothing with it...

Win or lose however, gotta love them TITANS!

I love the #1 seed because I get another home game and tailgate. After our dismal history in that area I'm willing to let it go for good. Oh and pluck the ratbirds!!!

not me...i look at it this way...if we get a home game then AT LEAST we have one GREAT day of playoff tailgating, fun, and enjoy the atmosphere. Of course if we lose it is death, but its that way if we lose on the road as well. But if we play on the road and lose then we never even got to enjoy the playoffs really. I for one firmly believe that our seeding has no effect really on how we play (besides maybe mentality) The league is tougher now than it was in '99 so it takes a lot of luck to make it through the AFC Playoffs as a wildcard. I know it has been done recently but it has only been done by top-notch QB's...Ben, Peyton, Brady...the '00 ravens did it with trent but heck if we honestly believe we would get as lucky in a second round road playoff game as they did...
