Ugh. Melky's error in the outfield was pathetic, leading to an inside the park homer. I guess it didn't matter in the end, but it was still ugly.
Good win for the Reds. The Braves still are struggling mightily when runners get on base.
Did you watch that game on Fox? That guy said if you ever wanted to throw a bar of soap in the shower that is what will happen. Now who in the hell want to throw a bar of soap in a shower? :doh
It was a win for the Reds but it didn't make up for yesterdays choke job.

This is a pretty impressive time table for Minor. He was Vandy's star pitcher in 2009, so he has only been in the minor leagues for about 15 months. While I hate that Kris Melden of the Braves got hurt (Braves are 14-1 when he starts), I am really looking forward to see what Minor can do.
The Phillies won last night thank to a blown call by the umpire. He ruled a ball that traveled over the third base bag as foul, preventing a run from scoring. The Phillies then won in the 10th inning for the sweep.
The Braves beat Lincicum and the Giants, but I thought for sure they would gain a game on the Phillies.

I dropped Medlen when he got hurt and picked up Minor as soon as I saw he was available. I like having at least one Braves pitcher on my fantasy team. I'll be at the Braves/Giants game tomorrow night. Missing them retiring Tommy Glavine's jersey by one night and Minor's debut by two nights. :(

As for the Braves, I didn't think I would miss Escobar so soon. :( I thought Alex Gonzalez was supposed to be a good fielder, but he has had 6 errors (and been involved with other errors where they blamed the guy he threw to) lately. If it wasn't for the comeback and Chipper's injury last night against the Astros, the talk would be about Gonzalez today.
Thank you, Dodgers, for beating up the Phillies last night. :thumbsup

I don't know whether to cheer that the Braves won their first road series in 4 tries, or complain that Wagner blew his 7th save of the season by giving up a run in the 9th.
This Braves team may be the craziest team I have watched. You can never count them out late in a game, but errors and blown saves are more common than I would like. After hitting no grand slams last year, they have hit 4 or 5 this year (one tonight in the 10th by McCann).

It looks like Chipper tore his ACL and will be out the rest of the year. :(
He was already considering retirement at the end of the season. Everyone wonders now if this injury will seal the deal. I just hate to see his season end like this, especially when the Braves are in their first pennant race in many years.
The Braves can certainly win without Chipper (Conrad has hit 3 game-winning homers after replacing Chipper in games), but he will be missed.

I don't remember a National League so bunched together at the top this late in the season. The biggest lead in any of the three divisions is 3.5 games, and the third place wild card team is just a half game behind the first two.
It's both exciting and scary at the same time for these contenders. 4 teams will make it, while 2 will have to sit at home. And you can never quite count the Rockies out from making a last gasp run.

The Dodgers still ended up finishing the night on a good note.
They signed the "un-signable" Zach Lee (most Dodgers fans thought they drafted him because they knew they couldn't sign him just so they could save money) and 13 of their top 15 picks. McCourt, Torre, and Colletti (I don't blame him because his hands are tied) might be trying to kill the current team and farm system, but Logan White keeps showing why he is considered to be one of the best at what he does.

I have learned to never give up on the Braves in the 9th inning this year. That was their 20th final-at-bat win (which isn't the same as "walk-off" wins, though this one qualified for both).
I hope George Plaster gives Melky some credit today. ;) He was bashing the Braves for trading for him, and he actually has done a pretty good job this season (and stayed healthy, unlike a lot of Braves).

Braves get Derrek Lee yesterday from the Cubs for three pitching prospects. I will say that Frank Wren is doing everything he can as GM to give Bobby Cox one last great playoff run. Troy Glaus is just not getting it done, though he could be a dangerous pinch hitter once he gets off the DL.
Heyward was the hero of last night, hitting a 3-0 pitch up the middle with 2 outs and 2 on in the bottom of the 9th to beat the Nats. That is their 21st last-at-bat victory.

A bad season might become my worst and the saddest season ever for me.
Vin Scully is holding a press conference before today's game and most are speculating that he is going to announce his retirement. Nobody knows for sure what the press conference is about and most are praying that his retirement isn't what he'll talk about, but nobody can see him calling a press conference to announce he's coming back.
Vin Scully is a living legend and is the greatest sports announcer I have ever heard. He still has that old school talent of being able to tell some great stories while also describing the events of the game to the point that you can visualize everything perfectly.
If he does announce his retirement today then I will miss him and everything he has done for the Dodgers.

This race with the Phillies is crazy. If the Braves win, the Phillies win. If we lose, they lose too. This 2.5 game lead went to 3.5 once last week, and immediately went back to 2.5 the next day. As long as it doesn't get closer than 1 game, I will be happy.

Once the playoffs begin, I don't see any overwhelming favorite in either league. Anything can happen.
The Reds problem is that they are 2-3 vs. Atlanta, 2-5 vs. the Phillies, and 1-2 vs. the Padres. Atlanta has winning records against the other 3 playoffs teams (if the season ended today).

Due to Ryan Howard being thrown out of the game in the 14th inning of a game between the Astros and the Phillies, Roy Oswalt had to come in and play left field. He became the first pitcher to play another position in a game for the Phillies since 1971. Oswalt apparenly shags balls in the outfield during batting practice, so he was comfortable out there. He even got an out.
Thankfully, the Phillies lost again, since the Braves can't seem to generate any offense in Colorado (of all places). For the past two or three weeks, it seems that every time the Braves win or lose, the Phillies do the exact same thing. This 2.5 game lead never seems to change.

Pretty bittersweet about the Reds west coast swing. Happy they went 6-3. Very rare to see them come away with a winning west coast trip. As far as the Giants series, wow. That was ugly. SF scored the most runs ever in a 3 game series at AT&T Park, and wasnt thrilled about giving up a 9 run lead in the only game of the series they could salvage. Cincy heads home to start a weekend series with the Cubs. Lucky for us Pittsburgh took 2 of 3 against the Cards and we still have a 3 1/2 game lead in the Central.

It's amazing the difference a week makes. Braves have won 5 in a row after losing 4 in a row. The lead over the Phillies is still 3 games, since they seem content to beat up the Dodgers (at least the Dodgers won once).
The Padres have surprisingly lost 7 in a row, and now they have only a 3 game lead over the Giants. But they also no longer have the best record in the NL, falling 1.5 games behind the Braves and Reds. If the Braves get homefield advantage throughout the playoffs, they should be the favorite to win the World Series. Thank goodness the NL won the All-Star game this year (thanks to a McCann of the Braves), because the Braves are just so dominant at home. I just can't remember the last time a team won 73% of their home games in baseball.

The Braves have fallen on hard times, but last night was a good win for them on the road over the Mets. With the Giants and Padres both losing, the Braves lead in the wild card is 1.5 games over the Padres (and 1 over the Giants). The Rockies are still a threat, and they are only 2.5 back.
I haven't given up hope for winning the division, but it may require the Braves to win 5 or 6 of the 6 games left against the Phillies.

Braves sweep the Mets and now have a 2.5 lead in the Wild Card. Unfortunately, the Phillies swept the Nats, so they still have a 3 game lead. Braves play 3 in Philly starting tonight, so who knows what might happen.
Last 12 games of the year:
3 @Philly
3 @Nats
3 Marlins
3 Philly
It's hard to believe that this is the last two weeks of the season. I am excited that the Braves are so close to a playoff spot but nervous since any kind of losing streak could be doom for this team.
Last 12 for Phillies:
3 Braves
3 @Mets
3 @Nats
3 @Braves
It will be tough for the Phillies to end the season on a 9-game road trip.
Last 13 for Padres:
3 @Dodgers
3 Reds
4 Cubs
3 @Giants
Last 12 for Giants:
3 @Cubs
3 @Rockies
3 Diamondbacks
3 Padres
Last 13 for Rockies:
3 @Diamondbacks
3 Giants
3 Dodgers
4 @Cardinals

I admit the odds are pretty bad now for trying to win the division, but if they could win tonight, it might spark some hope. With only a one game lead in the wildcard, every win is huge.

6 games to go for the Braves, and they are a half game behind the Padres for the wild card. Cubs play the Padres tonight, and then everyone had just has the final 6 games to finish the season.
Because the Giants and Padres play the last three games against each other, it really helps the Braves. If the Braves can win 6 against the Marlins and Phillies, they win the wild card no matter what. If they win 5 of 6, they force a tie at worst. If they win any less than that, it gets tricky.
I just hope the Phillies are content with winning the division and resting before the playoffs start.

It took 11 innings, but the Braves finally got a clutch hit in the bottom of the 11th to beat the Marlins 2-1. It's great to get guys on base, but unless they can be driven in, it doesn't matter. Braves left a lot of men on in scoring position till they finally scored.
The Cubs and Dodgers came through and beat the Padres and Rockies. Braves have a half-game lead in the wild card now, though they still need to win 4 of these last 5 to guarantee a least a tie. I will be cheering the Giants on to win the division.

The Red Sox will probably win 90 games. Not acceptable standards in the AL East or in these parts. However, in Theo's defense the team has been without it's heart and soul. Ellsbury, Varitek, Youkilis and Pedroia have been out since July. Martinez, Beckett, Matsusaka, Lowell and Cameron have spent most of the year on the DL. They went into a gunfight carrying a knife. Ellsbury has played his last game in Boston. Lackey had a disappointing year but he's here for 4 more so let's hope he turns it around.
Fenway park is filled to capacity 81 nights a year for over a decade now. John Henry, Tom Werner, Larry Lucchino are an ownership group that "gets it". The Sox will be back next year playing meaningful games in September and hopefully October too.

Ortiz is a tricky one, they absolutely want to bring him back because obviously he is a big fan favorite here. They will not give him 4 years like he is asking though. I think he has an option this year?
Yeah, V-Mart and Beltre need to be signed... This is not a good year for FA's though is it?

Giants wins but Padres lose. Braves magic number is now 2 for the wild card. It could be clinched tomorrow night.
As long as the Braves win one of these final three games, they force a tie at the minimum. Win 2 or 3, and they are in automatically.
The odds are pretty good that the Braves will play the Giants and the Reds will play the Phillies in the NLDS. If the Reds win out and the Giants falter, the Braves could end up playing the Reds.

Not a good start to the weekend last night. :(
The Braves were playing well in a 2-2 game when Beachy was pulled for the relievers. A 2-out error extended the inning, and the Phillies made the Braves pay by scoring on a bases loaded walk and a grand slam. I just hate having a big game get blown open by Conrad throwing to second instead of to first base.
Of course, the Padres won, so the Braves magic number is still 2. Any win by the Braves or loss by the Padres guarantees the Braves will have at least one more game, but I would like to save Hudson for the NLDS and not have to use him Sunday on short rest.

Baring a miracle comeback today, everything will boil down to tomorrow. The Braves are now one of worst fielding teams in MLB, which a big reason for a lot of their losses. You can only lose so many players to injury before errors really pop up.
Here are the scenarios for tomorrow:
Braves win, Padres lose - Braves win wild card
Braves lose, Padres lose - Braves play Padres for wild card in Atlanta
Braves lose, Padres win - Padres and Giants play for division title, loser gets wild card. Braves eliminated.
Braves win, Padres win - Padres and Giants play for division title, loser plays at Atlanta for wild card.

Thank you Giants. Now I hope you suck for the next 5 games. ;) Series starts Thursday in SF.
Reds have a tough task to play a 5 game series against the Phillies. That series starts Wed.
In the AL, the Rays clinched home field advantage, and they will host the Rangers on Wed. The Yankees travel to the Twins that night as well.

I stayed up and watched the whole Braves game last night. Here were my impressions in the 1-0 loss to the Giants.
Pitching - A If it wasn't for the defense, the game would be 0-0 and still going on.
Defense - C- The winning run was scored on a ball that was a grounder toward the third baseman. Chipper would have had it. There was also a blunder in the outfield which led to a triple (though good defense prevented that person from scoring). Conrad had another error, this time playing 2nd base.
Hitting - F The Braves got 2 guys to 2nd on doubles and one went to third with two outs. So there were some men in scoring position, but no clutch hitting at all.
Managing - B I really didn't see anything negative. Bobby switched his pitchers around pretty liberally in the late innings, and no one scored.
Umpiring - C A blown call on a stolen base led to the only run of the game for the Giants. This was yet another case where instant replay would have made a huge difference in the game. The balls and strikes calls were very good.
Let's see if the Braves offense can show up tonight.

It's great to see Derrick Lowe still pitching well in big games. The guy has carved out a pretty nice career for himself. Atlanta bats were overmatched last night. This series, unlike the others, will go the distance. IMO
You can't have instant replay on every close call in baseball. It was a bang-bang play, ump missed it, batter up. Sometimes you get the calls, sometimes you don't, that's baseball. The American league games are 3 to 3 1/2 hours long as it is.

10-08-2010, 08:13 AM
I am just hoping that if there are enough bad calls in big postseason games, instant replay will happen in some additional capacity (maybe a coach's challenge).
I will say that TBS's pitch location graphic is awesome. :thumbsup It's probably not needed in the regular season, but it pretty cool to watch in these important games.

Could be interesting as Tampa forces a Game 5 against Texas. If Texas wins, the Yankees will be able to avoid Cliff Lee until Game 3 of the Championship Series. If Tampa wins, it will be interesting to see if the Rays can knock off the Yankees like they did to the Red Sox 2 years ago (hopefully not!) I have a lot of respect for the Rays; they are a scrappy bunch. The Rangers are also good.
Edit: The Rangers may be able to use Lee in Game 2 if they win. Got a little ahead of myself.

Well, the end finally came. The cause of the demise of the 2010 Braves should be listed as "too many errors" created by "too many injuries". I have never seen a team commit 7 errors in a 4 game playoff series (though it wouldn't shock me if some team had done that). It's a cruel way to lose and not a fun way to win. I want to see games decided on the best hitting and pitching, not because of shoddy fielding. We get enough of that in college and the minors. :(
I am still very proud of these Braves for getting to the playoffs and giving the best manager a player could want a final send off. Bobby Cox may have only won one championship with the Braves, but his players and coaches would die for him. He has affected the lives of so many people, and he will be sorely missed.

More proof that Jeffrey Loria is one of the worst things to have happened to the Marlins (and the Expos before that).
Ozzie Guillen For Mike Stanton Trade Was Discussed
By Ben Nicholson-Smith [October 29 at 4:56am CST]
When Ozzie Guillen was at odds with the Chicago front office earlier this year, there was discussion of a deal that would have sent the White Sox manager to Florida for 20-year-old slugger Mike Stanton, according to Chris De Luca of the Chicago Sun-Times. De Luca reports that Marlins owner Jeffrey Loria was intent on making Guillen the Marlins’ next manager until Guillen met with White Sox chairman Jerry Reinsdorf and agreed to return in 2011.
Guillen says he never spoke to the Marlins about managing the team, but he confirmed to the Sun-Times that the White Sox granted the Marlins permission to talk to him. White Sox GM Kenny Williams repeated that he is on good terms with Guillen and insisted his manager is staying put.
''Ozzie is the manager of the White Sox next year and I hope the next 10 years after,” Williams said. “How many times do I have to [bleeping] say it?''
Guillen is under contract with the White Sox next year and he expressed interest in an extension at the end of the season, but did not sign one. Stanton batted .259/.326/.507 with 22 home runs as a rookie this year and is under team control through 2016.
Though manager-player exchanges are exceptional, there is some precedent for them. Eight years ago today, the Devil Rays sent Randy Winn to the Mariners after Lou Piniella left Seattle to manage in Tampa.

My son's little league team is the Giants this year, and I two of the coaches are huge SF Giants fans. So I have adopted them as my World Series team this year, and so far, it has been great.
The Texas bullpen has been awful these two games, and the Giants have scored 20 runs so far. This is not a team that is known for scoring runs, but when you have a 6 run inning two nights ago and a 7 run inning last night, it adds up quick.
Still, this series is far from over. Until a home team loses, it is still anyone's game. The Rangers could win 3 in a row at home. We shall see. Tune in if you haven't yet.

It makes sense. With the World Series schedule going Tue-Wed-Fri-Sat-Sun-Tue-Wed, the game is only going up against game 4. Under the old schedule, it was usually a game 6 or 7. If a team can clinch in game 4, it isn't that exciting a series anyway, and if not, game 4 isn't a huge deal.

Arizona tragic shooting has MLB ties.
The youngest victim of the shooting was 9-year-old Christina Taylor Green, who was attending the listening event with a neighbor. Green was interested in politics at an early age and had just been elected onto her elementary school’s student council. She was an avid ballerina, but hailed from a family of baseball players—she was the daughter of the L.A. Dodgers scout John Green and the granddaughter of former major league pitcher and former Phillies manager Dallas Green. In a tragic twist, the young girl was born on 9/11 and was featured as one of 50 children in a book titled Faces of Hope. In a heartbreaking interview with Fox News, Christina's mother, Roxanna Green, spoke out about her daughter and her senseless death. “From the very beginning, she was an amazing child. She was very bright, very mature, off the charts.”
