View Full Version : Titans #2 for drafting WR's since '97

Yeah, I did a double take too. The #1 team are the Packers. We're not doing so hot, since we've managed "to develop only one Pro Bowler, Derrick Mason, out of 17 drafted wideouts."

I don't understand. You would think after drafting 17 WR's that you might find one, just one!..that could catch a ball.

Well, let me explain this to you.
It's like going to cheapest car dealer in town, selling Yugos, and buying 10 of em over 20 years.
"GEEZE! You'd think after 10 cars, I'd find one that didn't break down every month and had decent performance!"
Meanwhile, your next door neighbor, Peyton. G. Coltington, has only bought three cars in the same time period. But he actually spent some REAL money up front. However, his cars run forever without breaking and give unrivaled performance. He just was willing to actually SPEND something rather than buy the cheapest thing on the market.
To make a long story medium - We've spent a bunch of picks, but they're all low-round picks that we keep spending on absolute bums. We tried a high-round WR ONE FREAKIN' time in our franchise history, it went South, and now we'll NEVER EVER EVAR "waste" a pick higher than round 3 on a wide-out.
So we have a front yard full of Tyrone Calico, Cortney Roby, Joel Filani up on blocks while Peyton G Coltington always seems to have a tough time deciding which of his luxury cars to drive on any given day.

Agree 100%. If we end up not signing Holt, we have to finally take a chance on a WR early in the draft. Especially considering this draft is so good at WR

the problem is turtle they spent a lot of money early on and still didnt even see results.
they paid a then record signing bonus for a wr when they bought in thigpen.
they drafted dyson real early.
they drafted a ton of wr's if not in the first but in the second and third round.
they bought in pickens.
they tried but were incredibly snake bit.
but really the colts and the steelers are pretty much the exceptions.
across the board the teams have had bad luck with wr's.
at times i think it is right up there with qb's with being a finicky position to fill really well.
the lions are not the only team to see top drafted wr's go bust.

You guys mean to tell me that the Titans have been drafting WR's all these years? When, where? I only remember one drafted WR, and he got cut in 2004 and shipped away to the Rat birds.

Does this mean if the Titans actually hit on a star wide receiver, it is nothing more than random chance like a lightning strike? :D

The odds of getting struck by lightning are roughly 244,000 to 1. Think more along the lines of winning the lottery (100,000,000 to 1). When you win the lottery, we'll have our very own Larry Fitzgerald.

The thing is ... if you buy a Pinto, you understand that you'll get ok mileage, but it wont look pretty and it wont win you any races. It's just not sexy and you wont keep it too long. Now, if you buy a Gallardo ... you know you have something that can get you somewhere... fast. It looks great and everyone around you wants what you have. We are not going to find a Gallardo in a Pinto Dealership .. If you're going to get a WR do it in the rounds that afford you the reasonable chance to get a good return on your investment. Rounds 1 or 2 give that chance.. after that .. it's blowing smoke and is painted that horrid vomit yellow color.

Nintova,
What you say is is what usually happens, but not always. In the 2004 draft, Larry Fitzgerald went in the first round, but another WR that was undrafted was Wes Welker of the Patriots. Now he'd have been a late round pick WR that wasn't a vomit yellow Pinto.

The Titans will get their future number one receiver in this draft.
Now, it's time for the all-loved phrase; BOOK IT.

First, let’s take a look at the wide receivers who might be there on draft day. Since receiver almost always seems to be a position of need for the Titans, and the fact that this year’s wideout class of draft prospects is pretty deep.
We’ll operate under the assumption that Texas Tech’s Michael Crabtree and Missouri’s Jeremy Maclin, both projected top 10 picks, won’t be on the board at No. 30. But here are four of at least 10 wide receiver prospects who are scheduled to or already have visited Tennessee before the draft. All four of these players have first-round grades in at least some mock drafts.
http://nashvillecitypaper.com/news.php?viewStory=67374
These are the four and the article has blurbs on each of them:
Kenny Britt, Rutgers
Percy Harvin, Florida
Darrius Heyward-Bey, Maryland
Hakeem Nicks, North Carolina

I think if you buy a pinto and you finance it, you shouldnt buy the extended warranty because it will cost more than replacing the car. I have no idea what that has to do with football though.

I would probably be somewhat displeased. I don't like drafting guys in the first round that can't contribute their first year.
2008 - Chris Johnson - major impact as rookie
2007 - Micahel Griffin - first made an impact on special teams and was an effective starter late his rookie year
2006 - Vince Young - rookie of the year
2005 - Pacman Jones - not a great rookie year, but good enough to be a starter at both corner and as a returner
Before then, there wasn't as much success for the first rounder that year until you get back to Kearse in 1999. (Haynesworth was ok in 2002, but he was still pretty raw. No first round picks in 2001 or 2004).

Draft the best available player among DT, LB, CB, OL, or WR. The best FOOTBALL PLAYER. Not the best athlete. Football teams need football players that play a certain position very well, not a jack-of-all-trades-master-of-non player who plays a little QB, RB, WR but doesn't even look very good at one position.
Thank you, pet peeve aired publicly. :soapbox

I'd like to see Hakeem Nicks, personally.
My only beef is that none of them seem like legitimate deep threats, except for Nicks and heyward-bey. I'd be afraid the former Terp would drop them deep, though. He doesn't seem physical enough.
Does anyone else notice Nicks plays faster than his 40-time shows?

Heyward-Bey will not be available by the time the Titan's pick.
If by some miracle he was, and they actually drafted him, though, be assured: Heyward-Bey does not drop the deep passes. His issues will be accross the middle, in traffic. Heyward-Bey is not a possession reciever, he is a home-run hitter. And he was money catching the ball deep. Just don't expect him to be money holding on to a 10-yard slant accrosss the middle where he gets lit up by a linebacker.

i say britt because hes money lighting up linebackers
he has good speed for his size, and by the way we play offense (run first, ball control)
he is a very very good blocker.
hes not the best receiver we could take or best blocking reciever, but he is the best all around guy for our scheme IMO
