NBC Sports Chairman Dick Ebersol announced today that John Madden, Hall of Fame coach and history, has decided to retire from broadcasting.
Madden has served as the game analyst for "NBC Sunday Night Football" since 2006.
Madden has been an NFL broadcaster for 30 years and has won an unprecedented 16 Emmy Awards for Outstanding Sports Analyst/Personality.

"It's time. I'm 73 years old. My 50th wedding anniversary is this fall. BOOM! I have two great sons and their families and my five grandchildren are at an age now when they know when I'm home and, more importantly, when I'm not… It's been such a great ride...BOOM!...the NFL has been my life for more than 40 years, it has been my passion - it still is. I appreciate all of the people who are and were such an important part of the most enjoyable, most fun anyone could have... BOOM!...that great life with the teams, the players, the coaches, the owners, the League… my broadcasting partners Pat and Al… the production people and the fans …is still great… it's still fun and that's what it makes it hard and that's why it took me a few months to make a decision. BOOM!
I still love every part of it - the travel, the practices, the game film, the games, seeing old friends and meeting new people… but I know this is the right time. BOOM! "

No life after Favre. :D
This got me thinking:
If Madden has been married to his wife for what will be 50 years this fall, wouldn't he have been guilty of polygamy, since he's been married to Favre for about 20 years?

"You have to stay with me a moment on this one. This is a little goofy here. You're going to say, There is old Madden being goofy again. But I started thinking about this after I got voted into the Hall of Fame. The more I think about it, the more I think it's true. Now I know it's true and I believe it.
Here is the deal: I think over in the Hall of Fame, that during the day, the people go through, they look at everything. At night, there's a time when they all leave. All the fans and all the visitors leave the Hall of Fame. Then there's just the workers. Then the workers start to leave. It gets down to there's just one person. That person turns out the light, locks the door.
I believe that the busts talk to each other. I can't wait for that conversation, I really can't. Vince Lombardi, Knute Rockne, Reggie, Walter Payton, all my ex players, we'll be there forever and ever and ever talking about whatever. That's what I believe. That's what I think is going to happen, and no one's ever going to talk me out of that (laughter).
These guys are going, Oh, no, hope I don't have to put up with his BS for an eternity." -John Madden-2006 Pro Football Hall of Fame Enshrinement Ceremony
This is an example of what I will miss most about Madden. He may not be the best broadcaster. He may fumble around with his words and thoughts, and he may have an unhealthy man-crush on Favre. But the bottom line is he made it fun. You always knew he enjoyed what he was doing and that came through. I can't blame him for wanting to spend more time with his family but I can tell you, he will be missed!
Here's to you Coach! :toast

I can't help but have two thoughts over Madden's retirement.
1) The death of Harry Kalas hit him - and he decided he didn't want to go the same way
2) I am getting old. Madden, Kalas et al were my football voices, and it's gonna flat out suck not hearing them anymore. :doh

He has more football knowledge than anyone they'll get to replace him, he just doesn't know how to express himself. Like him or not, he was still the voice of MNF (and recently, SNF). I too will miss him.
As for as his replacement, if you don't think it can get worse than Madden, you'd better hope Cris Collinsworth doesn't get anywhere near the booth.

Loved Dennis on MNF,
Something about a guy who can draw parallels between Justinians rule of the Byzintine Empire and Bill Parcells taking over as GM of the Dolphins is refreshing.

You have to remember that MNF and now SNF are heavily marketed to casual fans and non football fans. They know they'll have the true football fans tuning in but they do everything they can to encourage others to tune in. Sometimes that will mean "dumming down the game" and even the dreaded "celebrity in the booth at halftime" section.

You guys didn't enjoy Tony Kornheisers interview with Tom Cruise in the booth last year?

It was that kind of stuff that made me love/hate him. I'd start cracking up then get PO'd that I was laughing at him twisting my football game into a pretzel.

No question. The guy was funny, pertinent, and intelligent. I always liked when I could get his obscure references like "Coffee is for Closers" and similar. He is an intellects sports guy.

I vote for Eddie George to replace Madden. I love his pre season commentary.:doh
Maybe he will become an advisor to the Raiders ala Marv Levi/Bills. I think AD could use the help.

Every game is someone's first. Not everyone is hardcore enough to go online and join a team's message board and THEN migrate over to their own board when the team ditches the message board. Not everyone understands the intricacies of 3-4 vs. 4-3 defense. Many people don't know that Brett Favre is god masquerading as a mortal. :D
What Madden did so well was to explain the game to folks like that but not talk down to them. He explained it like a fan. When he got stuck... BOOM!
I'll definitely miss him. The Favre man-crush? Not so much.
