Basketball rankings are such a joke

The AP poll is pretty reasonable most of the time, but the sports information guys that vote in the so-called "coaches' poll" are a joke.

Vandy beat UT 85-76 in Knoxville and 90-71 at home. I don't get it.


Another weird ranking is Michigan St (20-6) at #11, while Texas (21-5) is at #17. Texas beat MSU 79-68 earlier this season.


The AP Polls are better, with Vandy #17, UT #20, MSU #11, and Texas #15.

AP: Vandy 16, UT 19
Coaches: UT 17, Vandy 20

Vandy goes up in the AP and down in the Coaches, and UT is still ranked ahead of them in the latter. Unbelievable....

I am pretty happy the AP Poll pushed Vandy up. Vandy definitely should be higher in the coach's poll, but I am not shocked now.

It does feel good that Vandy had the only visiting win at Tennessee this year.

One thing that I do hate about the rankings is that because almost all SEC games are on ESPN networks, those networks use the flawed coach's poll standings by the team names instead of the accurate AP poll standings.

It bugged me to see "#19 Vanderbilt" the whole game last night instead of the deserved #13 ranking. All other media use the AP rankings, but not ESPN.

Who cares where they are ranked 309? Vandy will get it's chance to prove the polls wrong in the next few weeks. The rankings don't mean sheyat.. How can you expect the coaches to have an accurate ranking while they are busy coaching? Big East and SEC coaches are not watching the Mountain west games with any real regularity. Get over it and win on the court, that is all anybody will remember anyway.... I don't even think the rankings matter to the guys doing the tourny seedings.

When your team only gets ranked every 5 years or so, it matters. ;)

I know it really doesn't mean anything in the long run, but it's a matter of pride.

Vandy is always pretty decent in college hoops and everybody around the country knows it... They are a bunch of talented and smart kids so don't sweat it. Just don't go into one of those 3 point shooting slumps when it matters most.... Will they survive and advance or are they one and done? At leat they will be dancing.... My dog will be fighting tooth and nail in the N.I.T.

The way they run the zone, I don't see UK getting by them should they meet.

I'm not sold on Kansas either.

I'd love to see UT make a run, but they're too up and down and they won't be playing in Knoxville.
