It's March 1st, and conference tournaments start this week. The OVC tourney starts tomorrow, with Murray, Morehead, Austin Peay, Eastern Illinois, Eastern KY, Tenn Tech, Jacksonville St, and TSU.
In the SEC, KY, UT, and Vandy are locks for the NCAA tourney, with Florida, Mississippi State, and Ole Miss on the bubble. The SEC tourney starts next week at the newly named Bridgestone Arena, and the fate of those bubble teams will be set.
Lipscomb won the Atlantic Sun conference regular season title by winning a 4-way tiebreaker (which included Belmont). Their tourney is March 3-6 in Macon, GA.
Feel free to discuss any other conference.

The Vandy-Florida game tonight is pretty big for both teams. If Vandy wins, they clinch a first round bye in the SEC tourney, and their chance for a #3 seed in the NCAA tourney increases. Florida would also be on shaky ground for the NCAA tourney, with a trip to Rupp to finish the season.
If Florida wins, they are a lock for the NCAA tourney. They also could get the #2 seed in the SEC East if they beat UK and Vandy loses at home to South Carolina. The tiebreaker would go to Florida because they would have gone 1-1 against Kentucky, while Vandy was winless against them.
It looks right now that both Vandy and UT are sitting on #4 seeds, and they could go up or down one spot depending on how they finish the season.

While I think the Bridgestone Arena is a much better basketball venue, it certainly doesn't have the prestige or mystique of Madison Square Gardens.

Vandy beats Florida 64-60! They shot only 8 free throws the whole game, but the last two by Beal put the game away. John Jenkins was the hero of the game, hitting 6 3-pointers.
I am so proud of this team. Florida was 19-0 when leading at the 5 min mark, but Vandy prevailed in the end. They finished 6-2 on the road in the SEC and guaranteed themselves a first round bye in the SEC tourney. Florida is now in danger of missing the NCAA tourney if they don't beat UK and don't do well in the SEC tourney.

And it looks like Lipscomb will not go to the NIT. In the event of a tie for 1st place in the conference, the team involved in the tiebreaker that goes the farthest but doesn't win gets the automatic bid.
Vandy's SEC bracket is looking really good now. UT and UK are in the same bracket now (opposite of Vandy), and if Vandy beats South Carolina Saturday, that pushes Georgia to that side as well (and leaves SC in Vandy's bracket). Miss. St. may be a #1 seed in the West, but they aren't that good, so Vandy has a great shot at the championship game.

I did confirm that Jacksonville State will represent the Atlantic Sun in the NIT. They were the only team of the four tied teams not to lose in the first round (but hey did lose in the semis). I don't know if that is an Atlantic Sun rule or an NIT rule, but it does make sense.
And congrats to Murray from winning the OVC. (ugh, I hate saying that). Also congrats to the Austin Peay women for winning their championship!

Not surprisingly, Vandy will have face the consequences for losing to South Carolina, and that is playing Georgia tonight in the semi-finals. :(
It would have been 10 times easier to face South Carolina (who blew a huge lead yesterday in a loss to Alabama) or Arkansas, but because of that loss, they face the a team that has been as tough as Kentucky against them.
UT struggled early against LSU, but they shook the rust off in the 2nd half and beat LSU fairly easily. Florida did beat Auburn and now faces Mississippi St in a game that very well could eliminate the loser from NCAA contention.

I don’t know why, but I really dislike UK this year.
Maybe it’s Calipari. Maybe it’s because they seem to get away with a lot of fouls. Maybe it’s the fact that they keep showing Ashley Judd jumping around in the stands; not that there’s a problem with that mind you, she is hot, but it gets annoying. It’s like, we know already, Ashley is a UK fan.
Anyway, Tennessee will be lucky to advance to the second round. That team truly is Jekyll and Hyde, and I’m starting to wonder if Pearl has what it takes to make them a serious contender.
Miss State just flat out choked today.
Vandy may have a chance at the sweet 16, but I don’t see them going farther than that. I don’t believe they’ll beat the winner of Gonzaga/Syracuse.
I also don’t believe UK will make it to the Final Four. I see West Virginia winning the East.
My Final Four prediction:
Kansas|Syracuse
West Virginia|Baylor
Final:
Syracuse|West Virginia
Champion:
Syracuse

That possible Louisville/Duke 2nd round game really interests me. Louisville is better then their record shows. They knocked off Syracuse twice and should have beaten WVU and Pittsburgh on the road. Puke better watch out if they end up matched against them.
TitansFan23

Yeah, Louisville really had Syracuse number this year; that zone D didn't work too well against them.
Kansas has the #1 overall seed, but that bracket they're in (Midwest) doesn't reflect it.
I have them advancing, but wouldn't be surprised if they get knocked off.

I was really shocked to see UT fall to a #6 seed. The only thing that makes sense is that they were 2-6 against top 50 teams. Though r
those 2 wins were against #1 seeds in the tourney.
Vandy has a favorable draw. They should have a size advantage over Murray, and they can beat Butler. Of all the #1 seeds out there, Syracuse looks the most vulnerable, and it is far away from their fanbase.

Vanderbilt (24-8, 4-seed). There's been a lot of complaining (rightfully) about the botched job the selection committee did with seedings this year. Few mis-seedings were more baffling than Vanderbilt, which certainly showed it can lose to inferior competition this season (lost to Georgia, South Carolina, Mississippi State, Western Kentucky). The Commodores aren't getting a lot of run in the hour-to-hour conversation about the tournament, but they certainly fall in the overrated-due-to-seeding category. A 4? We're still waiting for an explanation as to why this happened. Vanderbilt's alpha dog, A.J. Ogilvy, has spent far too much time in the background and will need to flip the switch immediately. We love Murray State to upset Vandy in the early tip on Friday.

I wouldn't say UT choked. Pearl had a big coaching decision at the end. Take the clock all the way down under 5 seconds and go for the winning shot, knowing there wouldn't be a second chance, OR do what they did and shoot with 11 seconds left, knowing they would at worst get a chance to tie at the end if they missed.
What I didn't like is that Hopson took the shot, when he isn't a good free throw shooter. I would rather see a better shooter out there take it, for just that occassion. And when he missed the 2nd, there should have been at least one UT player to run back to defend. Instead, they all were trying for the rebound and couldn't quite get back on defense.
I did think UT played as smart as they could when Michigan State missed the 2nd free throw on purpose. They instantly called the time out, losing only .2 seconds. Prince just didn't get a clean catch of the inbounds pass.

did you see all the missed shots before we even got there? or the guy left completely wide open under the basket? you cannot make those kind of mistakes in a big game like this. that's a choke job. IMO

I was pissed Saturday night after the UK loss. Now that I've had time to reflect on it I am happy the way the season went. After watching the 2 years of garbage Billy Gillispie brought to UK I was happy the way it turned out. We went undefeated at home, was the first program to reach 2000 wins, and won the SEC regular season and tournament. Hopefully Coach Cal goes out and recruits some players that know how to shoot the damn ball. Best wishes to Wall, Cousins, and especially Patrick Patterson in the NBA.
I would also like to wish WVU, Butler, and Michigan State the best of luck this weekend. I will never wish Duke any luck. They can rot as far as I am concerned.

I wouldn't call it a choke either.
However, the missed free-throws and dumb turnovers throughout the game eventually did the VOLS in.
You just can't do that in a tight game against a team like Michigan State.
The best thing about getting to the E8, is the exposure it will bring to UT on the recruiting trail.
The VOLS already have one of the top recruits coming in next year (Tobias Harris), and they have other recruits interested (Josh Selby, C.J. Leslie).

If you can't come through in clutch time then what do you call it? What do you guys consider a choke job then? i'm asking because I'm really curious. to me it's the very definition. we were particularly bad at the end when it mattered on hitting shots and taking care of the ball.

Tennessee has been like that all year though. They play recklessly at times, making stupid turnovers and dumb penalties (see Prince getting two fouls within 2 minutes).
I really didn't see anything different from them yesterday.
Brian Williams couldn't even hit the rim from the charity line, but then, he's just not very good from there.
MSU stifled the inside game, and forced Tennessee to shoot from the outside. They actually started out really good, but faded towards the end.
Tennessee has been spotty all season. One minute they're beating Kansas and Kentucky, the next they're getting handled by South Carolina and Georgia.
That's why it's difficult to call the loss a choke. MSU was favored, and Tennessee played about as well as expected of them. It's just that wasn't good enough.
If you want to see a choke, see Kansas losing to Northern Iowa.

ok, thanks! i asked not because i wanted to argue the point but because i was prepared to concede it lol. But i agree they started out good and actually could have sealed the deal except they left a guy uncovered under the basket i think on those Williams FT's. Or maybe it was a bit later. that's why i said we choked. we literally had the deal in hand and let it slip though. sigh. Williams is a great story though. did you see that article about him in the Tennessean? but my big bro and i were laughing at how clumsy he is during the game friday night. he literally trips over his own feet sometimes lol.
i do agree the future is bright for UT bball. it's great to see!

In basketball, I consider a choke job when you have game practically won with 5 minutes left (10 point lead or more), and then go on to lose it. See Ohio State-UT of three years ago.
UT never had a big enough lead (if they had any lead at all) in the final 5 minutes to come close to a choke. Heck, I don't even consider the Vandy-Murray game a choke by Vandy because is was so tight the whole game.

I believe the definition of choke is Memphis/Kansas.
Now THAT was a choke!

I'm pretty sure we had the lead with about roughly a minute left and a Vol at the FT line. We left an MSU player uncovered under the basket. I think that was after Williams missed two FT's (one didn't even hit the basket lol).
anyway, i'm proud of how this team played this year. When the year started (january 1) I thought we were destined for cellar dwelling in the SEC. But they scrapped and hung in there and made history. Such a great story...

That Butler coach is pretty impressive. The officiating was not all that good IMO.

Butler would have a hard time beating Duke without injuries, with them it's going to be almost impossible.
Duke wins #4.

Maya Moore is one of those special talents that is just tons of fun to watch even if you don't follow the sport.
For me the horrendous first half added to the intrigue of the game. I kept wondering when UCONN would go on one of their famous runs and I knew Moore would be the one to get them going.
I'm still shaking my head trying to figure out why they didn't start attacking Appel the second she came back into the game. She could hardly get down the court and they continued to shoot the outside shot. It took the a good 6 or 7 minutes of game time before they went after her.
Congrats UCONN and Auriemma on their 7th National Championship. 7-0 lifetime in the NC game. That's just insane.

I hardly ever watch basketball and did last night because of the historical significance. The irony of them being down for the first time ever at the end of the half wasn't lost on me, and added to that intrigue. I kept wondering how in the hell these ladies had a win streak with crappy shooting like that??? Then Maya Moore came alive and I understood. I couldn't hardly stand to blink because I knew I'd miss something.

UConn was behind at halftime when they met in the regular season as well.
