Might as well get a thread started about him; keep an ongoing update until he signs.

Right now, it looks like the Hags have the first shot at him.

To wit, league sources told the Post-Dispatch on Wednesday evening that Holt will be paying a free-agent visit to the Jacksonville Jaguars on Thursday. Jacksonville is in dire need of receiving help.

I'm pretty sure millions of dollars will make him not care about that. He's also been playing for a horrible team lately so he should be used to it.

The Titans need to make an offer Holt can't refuse.

By that, I mean they should put the head of a racing horse in his bed.

If Holt were to sign with Jacksonville, wouldn't that be like staying with the fabulous city of St. Louis? I don't get why he is visiting them. Their QB situation is awful. David Garrard is no better than Collins or Bulger, so visiting them is probably just to get our offer higher in dollars. I see the 49er's are also interested in Holt, but again that's a crap shoot of a team too. My guess is he sees what Tennessee is all about and never leaves once hes in town.

More Holt news:

If the Jaguars and Titans are both interested in Holt, that’s good news for him. The two teams hate each other (Titans coach Jeff Fisher once called Jacksonville’s stadium his team’s second home because of its run of success there), and both need a featured wide receiver, so Holt likely stands to make some good money off the situation.

It's not much but it's a something.

By: Terry McCormick, tmccormick@nashvillecitypaper.com

Tennessee Titans general manager Mike Reinfeldt confirmed Friday to The City Paper that he has made contact with the agent for free agent wide receiver Torry Holt.

Holt was released earlier this month by the St. Louis Rams, and made his first free agent visit Friday to the Jacksonville Jaguars.

Reinfeldt has not yet scheduled a visit with Holt through his agent Kennard McGuire, but maintains an interest in getting a look-see at the 32-year-old veteran.

“We’ve talked to his agent a couple of times, and it’s possible we may have him in to visit,” Reinfeldt said. “We’ve had contact with his agent, but at this time nothing is really definitive, but we have some contact with his agent.”

Holt, a 10-year veteran, had 64 catches for the Rams last season and is 11th all-time in NFL receptions with 869 career receptions.

If and when the Titans bring Holt in for a visit, Reinfeldt said such a meeting could be a mutual fact finding endeavor on both ends.

“I think it’s probably a two-way street. With all he’s done and all he’s accomplished, I think he wants to go to a place where he fits personality-wise, scheme-wise, locker room-wise and all that. It’s a two-way fit and I think it’s important to both sides to have it fit,” Reinfeldt said.

While the Titans’ focus is on the draft now and evaluating college prospects, Reinfeldt said the Titans are not necessarily through in free agency. The team needs depth at receiver, cornerback, quarterback and linebacker.

“There are still two or three positions on the team that we are looking at adding some depth to,” Reinfeldt said. “There’s still some free agents out there that would be of interest to us and could help us.”

Not much new, but there is a new spin on this article:

A couple of supposed aces in the hole that might work in the Titans favor is that they have some veterans, who supposedly know Holt pretty well with their state of North Carolina connections. Apparently, both David Thornton and Alge Crumpler, who played at North Carolina, know Holt, who played at N.C. State. All three from the state.

Remember last year, it was Thornton who helped sell Crumpler on the benefits of coming to the Titans and playing for Fisher and with a team that was on the ascent.

Might the same selling point work on Holt? Only time will tell. First, the Titans have to schedule a visit. Then, after sizing up their interest in him, see if the interest is mutual on Holt’s part.

Jacksonville is only the 1st stop (http://www.nashvillecitypaper.com/news.php?viewStory=67112)

I was listening to 104.5 between 8-8:30 this morning. Sometimes I just don't get Paul Kuharsky. He was talking about why the Titans might not bring in Holt. He said one thought is that many feel that Holt would come in as the #1 and that would delay the development of the receivers currently on the roster and the Titans may not be interested in delaying development.

WTF?:lolhit

This is not NFL Europe or the Arena league!!! If you can bring someone in that's better than what you've got...you do it.

I've been on the TOMB saying I really would rather us not go after Holt. Now especially since hes wanting more money (than we are willing to pay). It may just be me being biased because he was a former Ram but i just don't think he would be that much of an upgrade to put that much money into.

Free agent Torry Holt intends to play for a playoff contender, according to ESPN's John Clayton.

This seems to make the Titans the favorites to sign him. Of course everyone wants to play for a contender, and this may be Holt's last NFL contract. The 33-year-old is probably going to lean towards the biggest payday.

Holt at Karaoke

The former St. Louis receiver, in the Music City to apply for a job running routes for the Titans, felt the love in the room Wednesday night at Cabana as players hung out at Cortland Finnegan’s Karaoke For a Cure fundraiser.

Holt watched from the bar, escort Alge Crumpler to his left, Chris Hope, David Thornton to his right, as Nashvillians walked up to Holt, offering their support in his decision to consider LP Field as his new NFL home.

Holt, a seven-time Pro Bowler, had to be touched as he watched Titans players and cheerleaders attempt to sing “We Are Family” (Sister Sledge, circa 1979). Nashville is offering a warm welcome to the free agent receiver, hoping he will join Chris Johnson, Justin Gage, newly signed Nate Washington and others on the Titans offense

I guess my overall problem with the F.O.'s handling of things is that I don't feel they have any sense of urgency.

I agree, making silly, outrageous trades, signing ridiculous deals with free-agents, equals a bad long term plan. Trying to continually build on that model is doomed to failure.

But conversely, I continue to feel this team is good enough that we really are just one or two big names away. I would like to get a sense the front office believes we are as close to being championship material as I am, and go ahead and try to and be aggressive on a one or two time basis, just right now. Not change the whole philosiphy, not trade all our picks for the next 10 years, but just do something that looks like they're "GOING FOR IT".

Our meme when discussing this team's FO is often "anything to avoid salary cap hell." Which is good, our last real down period for a few yearscan be directly related to us winding up in salary cap hell. But I can all too easily see us, in 3 to 5 years, with a new meme - "Don't be so scared and play it so safe that you let your chances slip away without ever really taking your shot."

Don't go crazy, don't turn into the Cowboys or Redskins or Raiders. Just take one shot, right now, while our window is open. If it doesn't work, at least you'll have no regrets. The Preds had their shot a couple years ago, they looked like a legitimate threat, and they brought in Forsberg. They still lost in the first round, but I, and most pred fans, have no regrets, as they built the team the right way, slowly, and steadily, and then hit the button on the big-name just at the end to push them over the top.

If our window closes while we've sat on our heels and done nothing, I'll be no happier than I was when we ended up in cap hell. After all, when you're losing, no one cares if you did it "the right way" or "the wrong way". They just know you lost.

I've not quite given up on Holt yet. What I heard on the radio today (forget who said it, maybe it was John McClain?):

Holt is going to wait until after the draft, and see if any teams feel a little more desperate if they can't get what they want in a WR at the draft (and would therefore fork over a little more cash to ensure they sign Holt).

is it possible that something showed up when he went to visit teams.
in a couple of cases it seemed almost a sure thing teams were hot for him and then things would just get quiet after he left.
it happened here, jacksonville and else where.
there is no bidding war evidently going on for him and he didnt seem pleased with any offer.

the waiting for the draft almost sounds like he is in hope some team wont get wr help and maybe get desparate for him.

i suspect he was wanting a nice bit if guaranteed money with this probably being the last contract but teams maybe were not willing to give out a lot guaranteed but wanted to place incentives ect.

I seriously dought Holt will wait until after the draft to sign. It could eliminate the Titans and Jags from needing his services by those teams drafting a WR. Doesn't mean that what you heard on the radio won't happen I just think it could eliminate his best two options, the exact opposite of what he thinks will happen by waiting until after the draft.
From the buzz I heard, after his visit to Tennessee he was very impressed by both the Titans and Jags but NEITHER were willing to offer him #1 receiver money. Both teams were wanting to give him insentive laden contracts so he was going to go back to St. Louis and think about his options.

Both teams were not willing to offer him #1 money because the Titans and Jags still had concerns of the knee injuries that Holt has suffered over the last couple seasons.
Personally I just hope that the Bears don't become an option for him. I would love to have Holt and think if it is like contracts between the Titans and Jags we get him. However, if the Bears step in and put a similar contract together than he is as good as a Bear. With Orlando Pace and Lovie Smith connections I fear he won't be wearing two tone blue.

As for Holt, I think he will sign with us after the draft. He will realize that if he wants that ring here and now, once again, his best bet is to be with the Titans. I really don't think the Jags are contention-worthy yet, but we'll see this season.

My bet is the Titans only draft one receiver, sign Holt, and let him be the vet mentorship Hawkins and the new dude need.

I am not sure how much Fisher is scared to pick a WR that could have a couple of seasons in the tank.

Or maybe is that those WR's know what the offensive scheme would be like and it simply doesn't appeal to their interests.

Just a couple of thoughts here.

This leaves us in a really tricky situation come draft day...If we go ahead and draft a WR in the first round, there is no chance Holt comes here...BUT...If we bank on Holt coming here as long as we dont draft a WR but he then decides to go elsewhere, that leaves us even more screwed than we ever have been....

I personally would take a 1st round receiver (Nicks, Heyward-Bey, Harvin, etc.) over Holt.....Though it would be fantastic to rent Holt for a couple of years.

We shouldn't draft a receiver 1st round anyway, Holt or no Holt. Gage, Washington, Hawkins is a not pathetic enough WR corps to justify taking a 1st round receiver (the only exception I would make is probably Nicks as he looks like the most pro-ready receiver that would be there).

Best defensive player available in the 1st and then go receiver in 2 or 3 (where we still can snag guys like Britt, Robiskie, Thomas, etc).

That doesn't really happen in the NFL. If he wants a guaranteed spot for 2010 he's best off having a reasonable cap number in 2010, otherwise he'd be cut by almost any team after this season anyways.

We're not going to see anything until after the draft if then

Maybe it'll ensure that we try to secure the future of the position instead of going for short term fixes

:jawdrop but i wouldn't hold my breathe on that

Even if we take a receiver first (which we won't) I'd much rather have Holt.

Holt, who can play on day one, or a 1st round pick who sees very limited to zero action his first year....

:whistling

I'm thinking along the same lines. The Titans have taken receivers in recent years and supposedly been high on them - Hawkins, Williams, Davis, and Filani, but Coach Fisher doesn't seem keen on inserting a rookie WR into the lineup.
Even if the Titans draft a WR high I could see him sitting behind Gage and Washington and possibly even Hawkins while he "learns".

really i think the draft namely the first pick could help us receiving wise more on the field...but i guess Eric, uh David, ummm oh Torry Holt could be a "veteran" leader but i think we've been down this road b4....it would be nice to see to help fill this void in the offseason
