NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- With Chris Johnson among a handful of absent Titans, LenDale White traded and the rookies not with the team yet, Javon Ringer worked as the lone tailback at the Titans’ first OTA session of the offseason open to the press.
He held up fine under the workload, despite one bad drop and one rocket he caught with the help if his facemask.
When White was traded on the third day of the draft, Ringer said he first thought of his friend’s opportunity in Seattle, then about himself.
“Now this is my opportunity to make sure I step up to be able to contribute a lot more to the team,” said Ringer, a fifth-round pick out of Michigan State last year.
Said Vince Young: “Big Ring, Pinball, he’s doing a good job out there. He’s doing a good job. I try to slow it down in the huddle when he gets back do he can get a little breather and things like that. From the looks of it right now, he’s doing a phenomenal job. He’s in the right place, he’s continued getting the small details from his coaches and I think he’s going to be an outstanding player for us.”
A couple notes of interest:
Eugene Amano was at center with Leroy Harris at left guard, while Mike Otto worked at left tackle for the excused Michael Roos.
Jason McCourty worked with the front line defense as the second cornerback opposite Cortland Finnegan.
Fisher said the center and second corner spot could still be subject to change.
Receiver Kenny Britt’s not been around a lot, and rather than risk a muscle pull, he was put with rehabbing players. The way Fisher said it, it sounded like a punishment/ wake-up call situation to me.

I'm just happy Britt showed up! I don't know how smart it is to try and punish Britt in that type of manner! But it does tell me that Britt is still very very very Immature! And with the other's Scaife and Tully (Which im assuming they didn't show up again) They act like we owe them something! Both of them are being paid pretty damn good money! The only thing i can think is... That damn agent of there's! I will celebrate the day that man retires.

CJ will be THE question from here on out. at least until he reports.
While running back Chris Johnson, tight end Bo Scaife and linebacker Stephen Tulloch remain absent for contractual reasons, a large number of other Titans didn’t take part in today’s session because of injuries and rehab.
Aside from tackle Michael Roos, who was excused, these Titans all sat out:
* Defensive tackle Jason Jones (shoulder)
* Defensive tackle Tony Brown (knee)
* Safety Michael Griffin (shoulder)
* Linebacker David Thornton (shoulder)
* Cornerback Rod Hood
* Linebacker Pago Togafau
* Receiver Mark Jones
* Running back Alvin Pearman
* Receiver Kenny Britt
Coach Jeff Fisher didn’t give details about the players on the bottom of the list, but none of their injuries are believed to be serious. Some are experiencing muscle tightness and the Titans don’t want to take any chances.
Britt admitted he’s not in the greatest shape right now.

The answer to who would start at center was no surprise on Thursday. It was Eugene Amano, who moved over from the left guard spot he played last season.
Fourth-year lineman Leroy Harris lined up at left guard. Last month offensive line coach Mike Munchak said that would probably be the plan. In 2009, Kevin Mawae started at center while Amano played guard.
The starter opposite Cortland Finnegan was a bit of a surprise, however. Second-year pro Jason McCourty took reps with the first team, ahead of veteran Tye Hill and second-year pro Ryan Mouton. Veteran Rod Hood sat out of practice.
Coach Jeff Fisher indicated nothing is set in stone and said more than likely there would be a rotation. Still, it’s perhaps a reward for McCourty, a sixth round draft pick last season, for a good offseason.
Mike Otto filled in for an absent Michael Roos at left tackle. Meanwhile, receivers Justin Gage, Nate Washington and Lavelle Hawkins worked with the first team offense. Kenny Britt did not practice.

After watching all the video's from today's OTA, I'm very impressed with Ringer's attitude! He doesn't want to be complacent and think he's the #2 RB just because LenDale left! That's just a great thing! Now on the subject of CJ, Scaife and Tully... I don't think CJ cares about any 30% rule! He wants his money now! You can tell by how everybody in the locker room was talking that this isn't a problem thats just going to go away! But when it comes to Tully and Scaife, I Really can't understand how they are doing the same thing? It's not like either have been "Super Producers" on the field! I would think Tennessee would want to sign Tully and Scaife to an extension and honestly when i think about it... The Titans FO has had plenty of time to do so! And i can't see them asking for mega contracts! The only thing i can think of is... That damn agent of there's is asking for more money then there worth! I hate that man more then anything, Somebody needs to beat some sense into him. I'm just thankful that there aren't more player's on our team represented by that idiot!

IMO CJ will show up, and as for tully. Well we need to sign him to a longer contract now. But scaife needs to settle down. We are very confident in craig stevens as a blocker and if cook comes along then scaife will be just an afterthought.

This idiot on twitter today said teams loved that Dick Rosenhaus. I laughed so hard I cried.
My thoughts:
Woo hoo! I'm finnally pumped up about this season. Bye bye 2009 apathetic blues.
Finny working both sides, glad to know that 21st century philosophy is here to stay, about damn time.
McCourty starting, I have always hoped he would be our 6ft tall 4.3 40 running starter. A nice sign of the coming competition.
Britt needs to get his chit straight. Dinger will bench his ass, and thus he can kiss goodbye his next big FA check. He is only making a few mil over the course of his contract, if wants to make 2 to 3 times that in just one year, he will need Dinger to do it.
I love Tully, he deserves a contract, and him sitting out is really best to help force the deal getting done cheaper now, or avoid even potentially losing him.
Hope is a priceless player. I hope he has a better season. Glad to read him still pointing out Cecil's bad schemes. Hopefully Cecil learned something. By his comments, I guess not. /shudder
Scaife needs to get his ass to camp, before he becomes the next LenDale watching the season pass him by sitting on the bench in a contract year. Good luck with that Mr. No Show

I just watched the Witherspoon interview. He seems like a good guy. I hope he does a good job here.
PBV, do you really think holding out will get Tulloch or Scaife a new contract? What leverage do they have? I'm just asking....
it wont help scaife, he has already been overpaid for his mediocre production, which use to be the offense's greatest asset, sadly. But those days are long gone. He is an idiot to sit. But better for the titans to get cook reps, so ty scaife, by all means, sit out the whole year. I will make a note to try and remember to cry about it later LOL.
Tulloch was our best defensive player last season IMO. If we don't get a contract done now, I think we will lose him. I believe he will have another killer season and will test the market. That would likely mean another Ryan Fowler to replace him. Eww
TTP77
04-29-2010, 07:10 PM
I guess I just disagree with you about Tulloch. I'm not saying he's terrible, in fact I think he's a fairly good player. But he's not all that great. And post season evaluations by those sites that measure these things back that up. He made a ton of tackles i know. at one point I tried tracking his tackles but it got too hard and i gave up. At that point though a lot of his tackles occurred in the secondary so I think his numbers are a little inflated by the fact that the middle of our line really suffered after Jason Jones got hurt. I don't think we are in any real risk of losing him and if we did we would suffer some depth issues but McRath and Witherspoon can both play in the middle. I just don't think there's a big market for Tulloch personally.
EDIT: sorry, I see you are talking about losing him after this year. I'm just not that concerned about it. If he has a monster year in his own right then I may feel differently. I hope he does have a monster year.

Titans defensive tackle Sen’Derrick Marks reported to the team’s offseason program in mid-March at 306 pounds. In the past six weeks he’s already dropped a good amount of weight – he’s down to 294 pounds.
“I am getting my beach body on,’’ Marks said with a smile.
Marks said he’s feeling quicker, and better prepared for his second NFL season.
“I eat better, I do me a couple of crunches at night before I get into bed,’’ said Marks, a second round draft pick last season. “And that’s what I’ve been doing all offseason. I’m feeling good.’’

Derrick Morgan never has had a problem getting to the quarterback. How he goes about getting there in the NFL, however, is something the Titans want to adjust.
Georgia Tech's system called for the defensive end to read the tackle in front of him and react. Titans defensive line coach Jim Washburn has something else in mind for the first-round pick. It's no different than what the Titans ask of all their defensive ends.
"What we do is, 'I do this (expletive). So what are you going to do to stop me?' '' Washburn said.
"Coach Wash is just saying get off the ball and make something happen,'' Morgan said. "That is what he is expecting of me, to just play my game.''
***
:lol i'm sure he said more than that lol.

05-01-2010, 07:16 AM
"It would be unfair to Derrick Morgan to try and compare him to the Freak,'' Washburn said. "All I know is the thing this guy had on the other guys is he is hardcore. When he put his hand down he meant business. He'll bring it now. He is a hardcore, hard-playing dude and that is why we hired him to make up for losing Kyle. I am real happy about him.''

From that same article. I worry about that too. I hope fans appreciate Derrick for who he is. I think he's going to be a great player for us. :)

pretty good lil fluff article about Kevin Matthews...
http://www.tennessean.com/article/20100501/SPORTS01/5010330/2215/SPORTS/One+Titans+rookie+already+has+NFL+experience
Unlike the other Titans rookies, Kevin Matthews had been in NFL locker rooms many times, this one in particular.
"As a kid,'' a smiling Matthews said Friday as he looked around the Baptist Sports Park locker room, "I remember terrorizing this place.''
Matthews is the son of Hall of Fame offensive lineman Bruce Matthews, who played his 19-year career with the Titans. Kevin, a 6-foot-3, 298-pounder from Texas A&M, is an undrafted free-agent center.
His position coach is another Hall of Famer, Mike Munchak, who was Bruce's teammate with the Houston Oilers and later coached him with the Titans.
Kevin's father called a bunch of his friends to remind them his son was coming to town.
"I bet he is more nervous that I am about all this,'' Kevin said.
He's wearing No. 60 — he didn't ask if the Titans could take his father's 74 out of retirement.
"This is an awesome experience, very humbling and something I have been dreaming of my whole life,'' Kevin said. "To get a chance to do it with an O-line coach I have known for my entire life and around so many of these people I have known for so long, people that were here when my dad was here.
"Obviously I have a lot of stuff to work on. But Coach Munchak specializes in developing young players, so I am looking forward to working with him. Hopefully I have a great chance to contribute and who knows, hopefully they can retire maybe 60 one day here, too. We'll see how it goes.''

Quarterback Rusty Smith looked sharp throwing the football in Friday's rookie practice. He praised offensive coordinator Mike Heimerdinger and quarterbacks coach Craig Johnson for helping him with a technique that allowed him to put even more on the football.
"So I am already seeing the benefit of NFL coaching, he said with a smile.
Smith got some pretty good coaching in college at Florida Atlantic. His coach was Howard Schnellenberger, who tutored quarterbacks including Joe Namath, Jim Kelly and Bernie Kosar. Smith said he has spoken to Kosar on multiple occasions.
I could call him up and talk to him right now, Smith said. He called and congratulated me on draft day. I have spoken to Jim Kelly several times.
So I have met some of the big-name guys and they have given me some pointers. So that is one of the benefits of having Coach Schnellenberger as your coach.

I just got off the field after watching the rookies take part in practice at Baptist Sports Park. The group, 24 in all, made a nice first impression. Among the things that stood out:
* Quarterback Rusty Smith has a heck of an arm. It was a pretty windy day, but he had no trouble at all. He was accurate and had plenty on his throws, except for the one that slipped out of his hand and fluttered like a duck.
* Running back LaGarrette Blount looks a lot like former Titan Chris Henry, not just because he was outfitted in No.42. He’s well-built. But already I noticed something about Blount that Henry couldn’t do very well – catch the ball. Blount caught three passes in the flat and was smooth turning and going upfield.
* Speaking of catching the ball with ease, seventh-rounder Marc Mariani does just that. I’ve been skeptical about his chances of making the roster, and I’m certainly not going to change my mind in one day, but he catches the ball away from his body and moves well.
* Receiver Damian Williams looks the part. He fielded punts and caught the ball consistently.
* Defensive end Derrick Morgan didn’t do anything as far as pass rush drills, at least not in sight of reporters. But he’s thick and won’t be pushed around easily.
* Safety Myron Rolle handled himself like a Rhodes Scholar in the locker room. The guy is well spoken. On the field it looked like his strength isn’t in pass coverage. He got tangled up with receivers on a few plays, but did make a nice breakup. But he has an excuse for being rusty — he didn't play all last season.
* Safety Robert Johnson looks a lot thinner than 203 pounds. He’s a lanky guy and pretty athletic.
* Undrafted linebacker Jake Lewko had an especially tough time in coverage and got all kinds of advice from linebackers coach Dave McGinnis.
* Linebacker Rennie Curran looks like a human bowling ball, or at least a big ball of muscle. But he moves pretty well for being so muscular.

At first glance, rookie receiver Damian Williams looked like he was showing off on his first day in front of the Nashville media. The third-round pick out of Southern Cal caught punts one-handed time and again. Before long, Stafon Johnson and Marc Mariani jumped in and did the same.
“They asked us to do that,’’ Williams explained. “It is more about getting your feet square. Because the only way you can catch a punt one-handed is getting your feet square. It is just a good drill to work on getting underneath the ball square.’’
Williams will be counted on to provide an immediate boost in the return game. Last season he averaged 14.2 yards per punt return. He returned two punts for touchdowns. He didn’t return kickoffs for the Trojans but expects to do it for the Titans.
“It is a little different than punts,’’ Williams said. “But I definitely plan on doing that, too.’’
Damien please don't do that in a game....you will give me a heart attack....:)

http://nashvillecitypaper.com/content/sports/experience-near-fatal-accident-shared-two-titans-rookies
Because Damian Williams ran, he and Stafon Johnson walked together in the weeks that followed.
Now the close friends and former USC teammates have taken the first steps toward a career in professional football together.
Their participation in the first day of the Tennessee Titans’ rookie orientation Friday was particularly meaningful to the pair given the experience they shared last September 28. Williams was no more than a couple feet away when a bar fell on the throat of Johnson as the latter attempted a bench press.
“If anybody wanted to see some speed, that was definitely the time to clock me,” Williams, a third-round draft pick, said. “Yeah, I got out of there as fast as possible.
“It was definitely pretty scary. I remember it very vividly. As soon as it happened I just remember looking at him and I could tell on his face that something was wrong. I just took off and ran to the training room to get the trainer.”
***
“That story is an incredible story,” Fisher said. “The smile that was on his face when he walked off the practice field … it’s the first time he’s practiced since the accident, with the exception of the (pre-draft) workouts and those kinds of things. It’s tremendous. A tremendous story.
“He’s cleared 100 percent and ready to play. And he has skills.”
He also has a familiar face for a roommate in Williams, who was regular visitor to his hospital room in the wake of the accident.
“He’s one of my close friends,” Williams said. “I got a chance to spend a lot of time with him in the hospital and take him on his daily walks and that kind of stuff.
“It was a learning experience for me. You definitely can’t take anything for granted, and he taught me a lot.”
Maybe I missed it but that's the first I've heard that Damien was there when that happened to Stafon. Good thing he was there he saved his life!

From PK
NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- It’s out of training and combine mode, back into football mode for Titans rookies, who hit the field Friday for two orientation practices and have another Saturday before heading home.
Safety Myron Rolle said he’s picked up on two big things so far: Punctuality and volume.
“It’s just a massive amount of information that you’re expected to know, quickly,” Rolle said. “And be on time, be five or 10 minutes early. Coaches just don’t like that and it doesn’t make a good impression either.”
Quick thoughts on my first impression of draftees from the second practice, which ran less than 90 minutes and included 24 players:
Defensive end Derrick Morgan -- I didn’t see the defensive linemen except when they did a bit of special teams work. Their area of the field’s been re-sodded, so they worked inside the practice bubble and never lined up across from offensive linemen.
I asked Morgan about the biggest change he feels coming.
“I’m kind of understanding more and more what Coach [Jim] Washburn wants from us and what he wants from me coming off the edge,” Morgan said. “My aiming points coming off the edge and what my aiming points were. Really it’s a lot different. It’s more so just cutting it loose and making something happen. Back at school it was more so reading the guy in front of you. Now you’re coming off, you’re going 100 miles an hour and you’re making the guy in front of you react to you.”
Wide receiver Damian Williams -- Not quite as tall as I was imagining, he had a nice advantage in one-on-ones since the defensive group is three-fourth safeties. I heard one other sideline observe call him slithery, but thought it was premature based on the small sampling. He did some good things against mostly guys he should beat in given the drill and personnel. He looked pretty tired near the end, walking back to the line of scrimmage as if he was hurting.
Linebacker Rennie Curran -- “There were some times where I missed on a play in a one-on-one situation and a back got by me,” he said. “I’ve just got to finish a play, got to show them that I can hustle and I don’t get down on myself in adversity.”
Cornerback Alterraun Verner --I saw good ball sense. While he didn’t always maintain great position on receivers in one-on-ones, he always seemed to know where the ball was. He stayed with Mico McSwain to assure a breakup was all the way broken up and on another play, he nearly turned a bobbled and dropped ball by Bobby Sewall into a behind the back interception but at least made sure it was incomplete.
Safety Robert Johnson -- He’s lanky and doesn’t look like he’s 203 pounds, but that’s what they say he is and I am no doubter. He looks a little like Bobby Myers body-wise. He ran well with Marc Mariani on a ball that was thrown well beyond them both and had a quick close on McSwain for a breakup. Clearly the better coverage safety of the two drafted safeties, as we presumed he would be.
Quarterback Rusty Smith -- The guy Jeff Fisher and Mike Heimerdinger described after the Titans drafted Smith in the sixth round was just the guy we saw. Tall, poised, threw the ball on target and with great zip. He’s got a nice quick delivery without a lot of wasted motion and throws a tight, fast spiral. He looks the part. One ball slipped out and was a duck and he seemed to do well laughing it off as Dinger called it “just a bit outside.”
Rolle -- Ran up the back of a receiver more than once and didn’t look particularly in coverage. I’m sure he’ll be better and tracking and closing on running backs when we get to watch that.
Mariani -- He’s wearing 83, so the first thing I thought was “smaller Drew Bennett.” Then someone saw him run a few routes and catch a few balls and said poor man’s Wes Welker, which made me think poor man’s Julian Edelman. He caught the ball very well, always with his hands and seemed to be running to the right spots. I was impressed.
Defensive tackle David Howard -- Missed him on the field, like I did Morgan, and didn’t get a chance to talk with him in the locker room either.

In all fairness to Myron this is more rain than I've ever seen. I'm not even kidding when I say I'm getting worried. My whole lil cul-de-sac is flooded.

When the Titans held their first two days of minicamp this week, it was second-year cornerback Jason McCourty who worked with the first team defense opposite Cortland Finnegan.
Meanwhile, veteran Tye Hill and another second year player, Ryan Mouton, worked in a reserve role. Veteran Rod Hood was held out while rehabbing.
McCourty, a sixth round draft pick in 2009, said he’s ready for the competition.
“I am just taking it step by step, doing everything the coaches ask,’’ McCourty said. “And right now I am just preparing to make myself into a better player and whatever happens, however it shakes out, happens.’’
McCourty said he has a much better understanding of the game now compares to last year.
