Young to visit McNair's mom on July 4

Titans quarterback Vince Young spent plenty of holidays growing up with his friend and mentor, Steve McNair. He said he plans to spend this July 4 with the mother of the late Titans quarterback in Mississippi.

McNair was shot and killed on July 4, 2009. He was a father figure to Young, who first met McNair when he attended his football camp as a youngster.

Lucille McNair lives in Mount Olive, Miss., a place Young has visited many times.

“I’m gonna go out to Mama Mac’s house,’’ Young said. “I’m gonna go out there and spend the weekend with Mama Mac in Mississippi.

“It’s the one-year anniversary for Steve not being here. It’s gonna be a sad moment, but we’re gonna eat some barbecue and celebrate the life of Steve McNair, the things he put in my life and his family’s life.’’

Twenty girls housed at Nashville’s New Visions Youth Devel*op*ment Cen*ter had the oppor*tu*nity to visit with Titans quar*ter*back Vince Young on Thurs*day at LP Field thanks to the local chap*ter of the Delta Sigma Theta sorority.

Ear*lier this year, it appeared New Visions, the lone girls-only long-term juve*nile cen*ter in the state, was in dan*ger of being closed as part of a Depart*ment of Children’s Ser*vices bud*get cut. State Sen. Thelma Harper crit*i*cized the pro*posed cut, because it would have forced about 20 girls to be housed at Wood*land Hills Youth Devel*op*ment Cen*ter, which is a boys-only facil*ity. In Jan*u*ary, Wood*land Hills was iden*ti*fied as hav*ing one of the high*est rates of alleged sex abuse in the coun*try accord*ing to a U.S. Depart*ment of Jus*tice study.

The leg*is*la*ture passed a bud*get that ulti*mately allowed New Visions to remain open.

Harper said Young signed count*less auto*graph requests for the girls, who he urged to focus on their education.

“It was so uplift*ing, and it was such an excit*ing expe*ri*ence for the girls,” Harper said.

Ear*lier this month, Young was cited fol*low*ing an early-morning scuf*fle at a Dal*las strip club.

The local chap*ter of Delta Sigma Theta, of which Harper is a mem*ber, sched*ules moti*va*tional speak*ers from across the Nashville com*mu*nity to speak to the teen-aged girls housed at New Visions. Pre*vi*ous speak*ers include Eddie George, Steve Gill and Amy Grant.
