View Full Version : Titans could trade for receiver, Reinfeldt says
Zephyr
04-21-2009, 08:45 PM
“There is always that potential because there is a number of receivers that will get drafted fairly high that may open up other opportunities,’’ Reinfeldt said. “Someone might draft a receiver high and want to move one of their people. We would consider that option.
“I think there’s a chance we could still sign a veteran receiver, I would think either during the draft or post-draft, yes. I guess whatever options works out.’’
The Titans are believed to have an interest in receiver Anquan Boldin, who is being shopped by Arizona, though Reinfeldt wouldn’t say whether he's contacted the Cardinals.

Didn't we learn a lesson last year with J-Mac on trying to bring back past receivers?

I am sooo stealing this animated gif for my own uses!!!
Oh, and re-signing Drew Bennett and then ignoring any chance at Boldin or drafting a WR with a high draft pick is exactly the quintessential Reinfeldt move.
I hadn't thought about it, but now that I know it's out there, go ahead and BOOK IT! The f.o. will bring in Bennett, say "See, we got a veteran reciever, just like you whiny fans wanted!", and then feel completely justified ignoring the position for another year.

Geez, I called this back on the old board. The Titans will look to Drew Bennett and claim they brought in a veteran who knows the system, glad to be back, etc, etc.

Are you prepared to admit his lack of desire to win or guts to take a risk if he does sign Bennett and they give out statements exactly like TitansGiantsBears called it?
If Bennett comes back, and we don't go after Boldin seriously, then my mind is made up about Reinfeldt for all eternity. I will register FIREMIKEREINFELDT.com if it's still available, and I will fill it with content.

We have no way to know, but I doubt that they "ignore" any chance with AB. They may not be real interested, but they aren't unaware he's available either. And Reinfeldt gets credit for his drafts so far IMO.

When you're working on that website be sure to include the Titans record during his tenure. 23 - 9 will help convince people of his ineptitude I'm sure.
Might want to throw in that there have already been two pro-bowlers in his two years of drafting as well.

i really dont care what happens...it is selfish for me to want Boldin just for entertainment and more explosion on offense..but it really doesnt matter...if we have a good season we will have 4-6 "comfy wins 10pts" 3-4 games where just who gets the lucky breaks will win FG games and 1-3 where we get beat good... and maybe 2-3 games that have surprising outcomes....i should took the highest numbers for our 16 game total but somewhere in these ranges...
Last year i predicted on the TOMB that we did not want to play baltimore because of how they force "Crazy" things to happen...but i got blasted by that (i remember from you as well) because that wasnt football...we are way better...no way we will lose..and then i "didnt know anything about football" "that isnt a real reason to say we cant beat them"
well thats exactly what happened and it will happen this year if we make it...Our playoff hope will come down to luck and the bounce of the ball because the league is to tough and the games will be close...so i really dont think having Boldin will "insure" that we can make it to the Super Bowl...I mean who is to say he wont be running in for a game winning TD, get hit and fumble the season away? I mean all of this is fun and we want someone like Anquan to excite us (me included) but in January? hope in the 20-17 type game that we get the (rougher the kicker call, the music city miracle, HOPE that we dont have blocked FGs run back for TDs, HOPE that we dont have 3-4 fumbles out of nowhere, HOPE that we get that HUGE PI call on the last drive that could go either way)

One thing I wonder about, in regards to Anquan is, How much of his success is HIM, and how much of it is Fitz taking all the heat. AB doesn't get the number one CB every game, AB doesn't get double teamed nearly like Fitz will see several times a game. I'm not taking away from his obvious talent, but to expect his productivity to remain where it is in a PASS HAPPY offense... well, we're the Titans folks... we run, we don't have a true number one @ WR and Anquan would get a TON of defensive attention. If we pay the 10+ million and Anquan has a "down" season from his previous years, where will his "Anquan is the savior !!!" fans be then ?

I know that we are the TITANS and we play Fisherball, but does anyone here besides me think that the reason why it has been that way since mac9 and the dinger were together is that we havent had the offensive personel to play any other way and still win?
Did Mcnair not split mvp w/ manning a year or so before the dinger left?
So if we have the fire power with boldin, washington and 12gage at wr and have cj totin the rock that Fisher wouldnt have the Dinger open it up a little more?
With the supposed speedster in washington and then with gage getting better and better then i dont see why any of those 3 wouldnt benifit from one of them being double teamed.

I guess I fail to understand how ONE MOVE can either make him a genius or make him deserve to be fired. Maybe some of your tests in school growing up only consisted of one question, but I feel like MR's track record since he was been here has been more than above average and this one decision will neither make nor break his future legacy here with the Titans.

Anquan Boldin would probably throw a temper tantrum at the notion of being traded to the Titans. The Titans do not have an elite QB, nor do the Titans have a pass happy offense that would cater to Boldin's wishes. It would be a match made in hell.
If the Titans ever acquire an elite receiver, it will have to happen by the draft. It may not happen until I retire in another 25-30 years. :D

I think Washington was definitely wanted. I don't really recall a lot of "We need Harper" before he became a Titan. It was more along the lines of "We need a veteran CB" and that's what the Titans got. It remains to be seen if we got replacements for Carr and Haynesworth or bodies. Mawae was definitely an upgrade over Hartwig. Scott doesn't get nearly the credit he deserves. Kearse worked out pretty well although he wasn't the same player he once was. I think his comfort level here helped him relax and just play. It was a good pick up.
My take is this... the Titans don't necessarily have to land Boldin, Holt, or whoever at WR for me to be happy. Just don't bring in another J-Mac or Bennett and pretend the problem is addressed. Get another receiver that can help this team via the draft, trade, or free agency. If a playmaker is available don't lowball the guy and settle for someone with 1/3 of the talent because he's cheaper. And again, don't turn around and pretend the problem's been addressed.

New team in on Boldin discussion?
With talks having cooled for a day or two, and the new thinking being that perhaps Anquan Boldin would stay in the desert this season, the Tennessee Titans have emerged as a new destination, according to the Nashville Tennessean. Speaking with the Tennessean's Jim Wyatt, Titans general manager Mike Reinfeldt was not explicit in discussing any possible trade, but did seem open to exploring the option, saying, "It's safe to say we're always trying to get the team better, so we'll continue to monitor various situations."
As long as the Titans have been in Tennessee, they have sculpted a run-first offense. Due to this philosophy, the team isn't normally active in the market for top-tier wide outs, and it's usually a possession receiver that closes the season as the team's most productive pass-catcher. This culture underwent a small shift already this off season with the signing of Nate Washington, a player who possesses both the speed and leaping ability to become a force as a deep threat.
A trade for Boldin would push the Titans further in that direction, and the team is in a good situation regarding the salary cap, with around $13 million to play with according to some estimates. Boldin's individual production may take a hit because the Titans will still be focusing their offense on the running game, but he will provide the reliable target that the team has lacked for several years since Derrick Mason moved on to the Baltimore Ravens.
However, the alleged asking price that the Arizona Cardinals want in return for Boldin could be a big sticking point. Tennessee is a team that values its draft picks pretty highly, and usually develops players from within the organization. So to give up two of its first three picks would require some serious internal salesmanship from those in favor of the deal. While Boldin would certainly be the most dominant wide out the team has had since the days of Mason - who was part of a core that made it all the way to Super Bowl XXXIV - the Titans proved in 2008 that even without a topflight passing game, their style of play can be a great success in the NFL.
If the Titans take a pass on Boldin, they have some workable options if they decide to use their first pick on the position. The top two receivers will be long gone by the Titans' first pick (No. 30 overall), but with a trade to move up a little, they could be in the mix for Darrius Heyward-Bey, and could definitely position themselves for Hakeem Nicks or Kenny Britt. Percy Harvin's prospects have undergone an almost historic free fall as of late based on character concerns and a mysterious foot fracture, and after the whole Pacman Jones saga, the team likely won't take a risk again on a player with questionable character. With all of this said, the team hasn't drafted a wide receiver in the first round since 1998, and there is the thinking that the Titans will use the 30th pick on defensive end or the defensive backfield. The draft's biggest wild card is Cal Poly's Ramses Barden, and the Titans could try to land the 6-foot-6 specimen in one of the later rounds.

The Cards have reportedly dropped their price on Boldin. Now a second rounder and an additional player. That's interesting.
Per rotoworld quoting ESPN news.

TGB...very well said. I agree. We really need more common sense in our F.O. when they bring players.
Honestly I thought that McCarreins was a good choice because when he left, he did good things for us...but the Jets returned him BROKEN!! :rant
He had that one infamous game with the Jets where he dropped like 6 passes that were right in his hands - several of them drive killers and touchdowns. He was never the same player after that. You can find the video on youtube by typing Justin McCareins and Jets. It's a hoot to watch! :lmao
