I'm wondering if the notoriously low-scoring Predators will have even more problems putting up offense this season. The best goal scorers not named Hornqvist are Dumont (32 years old) and Sullivan (36 years old.) David Legwand never became the #1 center the Preds needed, and Colin Wilson has been put at the wing instead of his natural center position. Then there is the backup goaltending situation....

I have to be honest - I'm not into a new season yet. That's what the Leafs have done to me, as well as Canadian coverage. I'm simply borderline sick of hockey and only am ready to get into it when I'm pulling out my winter clothes out of the closet.

One thing about the Habs - no organization EVER does a tribute with more class than them. I was borderline choked up as I listened to one of my fave Beatles tunes as they played the footage. He was loved by both Leaf and Hab fans, which is a rarity.

Islanders 9, Penguins 3: WOW! If you didn't see it, the old joke "I went to a fight, and a hockey game broke out" seems appropriate. I don't think the NHL League Offices are going to find too much amusing about this game. Though I think the Islanders may become a better team and point to this game as a turning point in their development.

Pittsburgh (and other teams as well) have been running the Islanders players all season. Talbot's questionable hit on Comeau, plus Fleury and Co. laughing at them after the previous game was the final straw. A team that plays Matt Cooke and defends his dirty actions got a well-deserved what-for last night.

I'm sure the Penguins will think about this game and the league will be ready for the April rematch. At least the Islanders stood up for one another. Granted, they may have gone over the top a little bit.

Jones31

Like hell, the Islanders threw the book and the code out the door last night. I saw that hit on Comeau last night, and I knew nothing about it until then, it looked legal to me. Which tells me it wasn't that bad.

Kind of like Hamhuis getting waxed by a legal hit earlier this week everyone wants to cry because their player got hurt in a contact sport.

This was just like the same garbage the Marc Crawford let go on with Vancouver and Colorado, after the Steve Moore hit on Markus Naslund.

Matt Cooke is a worthless piece of **** also.

8 fighting majors and 5 ejections is a little over the top?

Looks like Brian Burke finally came to his senses and realized that no matter how hard you try, you cannot shortcut a rebuild. He really seems to think that Leaf fans wouldn't tolerate a true "painful" rebuild. He couldn't be further from the truth. I'd rather pull a Edmonton or Pittsburgh, hit rock bottom and get a franchise player, then start the build. It's been 43 years, I'm willing to wait to 47 if if they would rebuild correctly.

I loved the Versteeg deal. 1st and 3rd for a solid 3rd line player works for me. The return on Beauchiman was also fine. The cupboard is so frigging bare of Tier 1 prospects here - Gardiner immediately became one of the Leafs' top d-line prospects.

Kaberle is next - If Boston will trade back the Leafs's 2011 1st rounder its done.

Well I was close, Boston's 1st rounder and their 2008 1st rounder Joe Colboune, plus a conditional 2nd rounder in 2012 if he extends with Boston or they make the finals. Good haul for an upcoming UFA that was likely done after 13 years in Toronto. Boston got a MAJOR piece now. The Leafs have helped make Philly/Boston a very likely East Final

I love that deal if I'm a Blues fan. Chris Stewart is going to have a better career than Johnson. Just because he's a #1 overall pick doesn't automatically mean they lost the deal. It means Johnson was a crummy pick.

Still trying to understand how Chara didn't get suspended for almost killing Pacioretty. One day the NHL will actually wake the **** up and learn how to police itself. I hyope it happens before someone actually does die on the ice, because right now the lack of respect players are showing for each other suggests its inevitable.

The Canadian government sure didn't like the NHL's decision either.

Air Canada is now threatening to pull sponsorship in the NHL, that's a ton of money for all teams in Canada especially the Leafs.

Not that simple - Air Canada is actually a NHL sponsor, not a sponsor of the Leafs persay - their building sold naming rights to Air Canada. Make no mistake - this was political. Air Canada's Global HQ is based in Montreal. The government outrage is Quebec-driven.

In any case, anything that stops this madness works for me. The players seem content to kill each on the ice, so someone has to stop them. I know this, I'll never let my kids play hockey unless they insist. Its way too stupid up here. I've watch parents cuss out kids at local rinks.

Jones31
03-10-2011, 12:12 PM
I know, they are a major sponsor up there, that's why I said all teams. :) Since their name is on the house in TOR it hits them harder in sponsorship money more than the others I would think.

Toronto

Gotta give the Canadian media credit - they have ridden this story like a surfer on a tidal wave. (not meant in jest over the tsunami) I've seen at least 25 op-ed pieces the last 2 days, and today's Globe and Mail had it as their lead front page story, 4 columnists wrote about it, and it was their paper's own op-ed.

Somehow, I think as bad as the hit was, there are more pressing stories that warrant a respected newspaper's time and energy.h

I haven't looked anywhere else, but I think I have the tiebreakers down right.

To get the #4 seed -
1. Preds win in regulation or OT and not a shootout. This makes it no matter what Phoenix does, since the Preds and Coyotes split the regular season and Preds have a better goal differential.
2. Preds win in a shootout AND Coyotes win in a shootout or lose. Because shootout wins don't count in the first tiebreaker, the Preds and Coyotes are actually tied in wins that matter (even though Preds have one more total win). So if the Preds were to win in a shootout and Coyotes won another way, Coyotes would pass them.
3. Preds lose in OT AND Coyotes lose in any fashion. Kings are down 2 regulation wins and can't pass Preds.
4. Preds lose in regulation AND Coyotes lose in regulation AND Kings lose in any fashion AND Ducks lose in any fashion AND Blackhawks lose in any fashion.

The big thing is to get at least one point tonight (or risk falling all the way to 8th place). A win in regulation clinches the spot outright.

Great job Sec309....I cross my fingers we beat the Blues in regulation...although I have to admit, I wasn't happy how we played today on defense...That was pathetic...Thank God we have Rinne. He saved our butts today....Still I'm happy we clinched today a spot in the playoffs...

btw... under 4) Kings and Ducks play each other in the last game... so no chance that both lose...(or simply I misunderstood what you mention by it)...

Well so far....Phoenix lost (vs. Sharks) and the Ducks beat the Kings....According the new standings the PREDS are now 5th....Tomorrow we need the Red Wings to win (vs. Chicago) and we'll stay on the 5th....and have to play the Ducks...If Chicago wins we play Detroit...We won't have home advantage regardless...

Here is a look back at the previous meetings this season between the Ducks (47-30-5) and Predators (44-27-11). Anaheim is 1-3-0 against Nashville this season:

October 9 (at Nashville): Predators 4, Ducks 1: Steve Sullivan scored the go-ahead goal in Nashville's season opener

November 7 (at Anaheim): Ducks 5, Predators 4: Paul Mara scored with 1.7 seconds remaining in the third period to give Anaheim their only win over Nashville this season.

January 5 (at Anaheim): Predators 4, Ducks 1: Saku Koivu scored the only goal for Anaheim

Agree....the only "stain" on that team is Raffi Torres....Coming back from a 4-game-suspension and then delievering a similar hit, what brought him the suspension, on Seebrook is beyond anything I've seen before in hockey...What an idiot...NHL should ban him for the whole playoffs...

At first glance, I thought the hit was dirty - but take a few looks, its not as bad as his ridiculous headshot on Eberle that got him 4 games. He is an idiot though for even thinking about that kind of hit coming off a suspension. He's lucky the NHL didn't choose to suspend this time, for the simple intent that no matter how you look at it, he tried to kill Seabrook there. No respect for the opposing player at all, one of the biggest issues facing hocky as a whole.

The Canucks are the only team in the NHL that has...

1) Good to great goaltending and a quality backup
2) Secondary scoring - Kesler/Samuelsson and Burrows on the second line?
3) 5 good to great d-men. No one has to eat 30 mins a game.

They got 'lucky' in a sense that their injuries were earlier this season and have now gotten healthy. Those players? Hamhuis, Salo, Ballard and Bieksa, just their top 4 defensemen.

If they sweep Chicago or take them out in 5 I really think they will wipe out the West - the only team that can give them a 7 game fight is Detroit IMO.

The is a rare time where I congratulate Bettman. First TV deal in the USA in ages that actually helps the league immensely. I still wish they would get ESPN involved, as they're a million times better than Versus or whatever they'll be called now, but I guess it was all NBC or no NBC.

As an aside, the NHL once again has shown everyone they didn't learn a thing after they threw the book at Cooke. Gone right back to 'meh' suspensions for headshots and idiotic hits that are meant to decapitate opponents.

Sad.

ZachLV27

How does the NHL let Chara get away with a deliberate whack to the guys face with his stick? Especially when he is just coming back from a suspension. If he isn't penalized for that and if the NHL doesn't start enforcing real punishments for cheap shots then this league is going to become more and more of a joke to the casual fans.

Edit: I think I'm thinking of someone else just coming back from a suspension though I do believe Chara was recently involved in something that many fans thought he should have been suspended for.

You guys would know better than I do.

My cable company doesn't even offer Versus. That's how bad this tv deal is. This may be a real good deal in the short term but I'm not sure it is the best deal for the NHL in the long run. I would think the NHL would benefit more being on ESPN which almost everyone gets.

I know I don't live in a big market which is part of the reason that I don't have Versus but this town actually loves hockey and shows it in their support of the minor league hockey team we have here.

I even know some people in large markets that don't get Versus because they don't pay for a certain additional package.

don28
04-20-2011, 09:35 AM
I'm glad the TV deal stayed with NBC/Versus. On ESPN, the NHL would have been relegated to 4th priority behind the other team sports. At least with this deal, the NHL is the big fish, even if it is in a smaller pond.

As far as Phoenix, they have sure been playing like they even know that their last game in Phoenix is coming up tonight. I do believe that they will be the Winnipeg Jets again. I feel bad for the hockey fans in Arizona, but at the same time it would be hard to be unhappy for those in Winnipeg who loved their Jets and lost their team.

We know Detriot and the Preds have advanced. Let me know if the following is correct:

1. If Vancouver and San Jose win, Preds play Vancouver and Detriot plays San Jose.
2. If Chicago and San Jose win, Preds play Detroit and Chicago plays San Jose.
3. If Vancouver and LA win, Preds play Detriot and LA plays Vancouver.
4. If Chicago and LA win, LA plays Preds (home ice) and Chicago plays Detriot.

So ideally, we want Chicago and LA to win their series, which would give the Preds home ice advantage in the 2nd round and possible home ice in the conference finals (if Chicago keeps winning).

Update: I updated #2, since it was wrong (we can't play San Jose).

The team to avoid IMO is Detroit. Every other team can be beaten and will be much more beat up. I see no way that the Canucks win tomorrow night. They will be squeezing the sticks way too tight and how the hell is Luongo supposed to have any confidence after getting yanked in Game 6?

Gillis had some good points about crap officiating, but its not on the officials that they laid eggs and didn't show up in Game 4 and 5.

While Detroit at times has looked vulnerable, they also have enough hockey sense and smarts to make up for what they lack in youth and speed. I believe the Predators could win a series against Detroit, but it would require playing better than they did against them in the regular season. Nashville won the season series 4-2, but this level of play will be much higher than that.

EASTERN CONFERENCE

Capitals over Rangers in 7
Sabres over Flyers in 7
Penguins over Lightning in 7
Bruins over Canadiens in 6

I gave Rangers goalie Henrik Lundqvist more credit than he could overcome with the Rangers skaters in front of him.

Close call on Sabres/Flyers, but the deeper team won in the end. If they had a true #1 goalie, they would win the Cup.

Penguins just couldn't overcome missing their top 2 players.

Bruins find a way to beat their hated arch-rival. I don't think that they will escape the Flyers.

WESTERN CONFERENCE

Canucks over Blackhawks in 6
Sharks over Kings in 5
Red Wings over Coyotes in 7
Predators over Ducks in 7 (reaching/hoping on this one)

Canucks won, barely, but now may have the momentum to take it all the way.

Sharks struggle with the Kings a little more than I thought they should, especially with the Kings missing their #1 center.

Coyotes apparently were in Winnipeg mentally, they didn't even show up for this series.

Predators do it in 6, despite the fact Bobby Ryan's all-time highlight reel goal will haunt David Legwand's nightmares forever. I honestly thought the series had turned on that goal. Glad to be wrong.

For anyone that couldn't see the game (like me), the predators.nhl.com website has an extensive video replay of all the big plays.

People have claimed that Rinne would have to play awesome for the Preds to win this series, and man, he certainly did! Those were some of the best saves I have seen in a hockey game, and he had a lot of them. Wow!

Great win by the Preds. To score with 62 seconds left in regulation and go on to win can really shift all the momentum of a series.

You outplayed them all game minus the 1st OT - fullly deserved the win. And Bieksa made Rinne look great on that save. He should have buried it...

If the Preds don't win tonight, the NHL is going to have a pretty disappointing 2nd round. One sweep already and two 3-0 leads in the other two series. The Preds-Canucks are the best chance to have an exciting series, but it needs to be tied after tonight.

The Preds have made a lot of history during these playoffs:

1. First series win
2. First time to win 2 road games in a series
3. First OT win
4. First Double-OT game (and win)

Now it is time to do something no Preds team has done before, and that is win an elimination game. I know it will be very difficult to win three of these when the Preds have failed to win even one, but hopefully they can prevail.

It was a disappointing end to the Predators season. The first Canuks goal was pure sloppy defenisve play from the Preds, and the 2nd goal came from a power play based on a very questionable penalty.

The Preds goal was pretty flukey as well. Then after that, the Preds never got any good scoring chances. They failed to take advantage of the four power plays in the first period, which cost them the game.

I am proud of the Preds for having their best playoff series in their history, and for being the best playoff team in their history as well. It still won't make me buy season tickets next year, and I may still only go to a game or two. But I did have fun, and I wish the Preds the best of luck next season.

The Sharks are about to complete their annual playoff choke, come this Thursday. Unbelievable. Maybe the ownership will finally see that it's the players and not the coaches that are the problem. Everyone likes to take their shots at Ron Wilson, but he got a less talented Capitals team to the Stanley Cup. The Sharks are playing the same way with McLellan as coach. Time to blow it up if they don't take care of business.

Roenick, as much as he's a complete schmuck, was dead on when he ripped Marleau. However, its niot just Marleau, its Thornton, Heatley etc. Their 3 best offensive players (arguably) have gone invisible the last 3 games (in Marleau's case, all series) and if it weren't for Setoguchi, Pavelski, Couture and Clowe, they'd be screwed. They are so bloody deep that its mindblowing. With the Canucks looking vulnerable and the Lightning and Bruins standing in the East, they will never get a better shot at a cup.

I remember when being down 3-0 in a series was it, you were screwed. 3 times in the last 12 months now a team has come back from that deficit. Getting kooky.

"Rested" doesn't seem to mean much these days, as seen in our series. But Vancouver should be the heavy favorites to represent the West in the Stanley Cup finals.

I have no idea who will win between Boston and Tampa Bay. Boston hasn't played since last Friday, and Tampa Bay hasn't played since May 4. We will see if too much rest can hurt these teams or not.

For once Leaf fans can smile over ripping off another team in a trade, Kaberle has looked useless, and his turnover that allowed the Purcell goal was a classic deer in the headlights moment. Has added nothing to the PP which looks awful and he was never known as a defensive d-man.

I called TB in 6, and Canucks in 5. Don't know why, but feel the Shark team is still missing a player or two to put them over the top. Kesler is a mega-difference maker for them, and the Sharks won't shut down the Sedins - they don't have Seabrook/Keith or Suter/Weber to eat 30 mins a game.

WINNIPEG FREE PRESS

A rumoured press conference to announce the return of the NHL to Winnipeg could be a go, Premier Greg Selinger hinted on Friday.
"I think Tuesday could be an interesting day," Selinger said, after a press conference to thank the military for their flood-fighting efforts.
Selinger declined to give specifics and advised fans not to "jump the gun," but said he was "totally excited" about bringing the NHL back to the city.
The Globe and Mail reported Thursday that the deal for True North Sports and Entertainment to buy the Atlanta Thrashers was done and waiting for a public announcement — which could see Selinger standing next to NHL commissioner Gary Bettman early next week.
But like TNSE, which has denied the Globe and Mail report, Selinger played coy on the details of a rumoured deal. "Let's make sure we've got the ink dry," he said. "Let's see what happens on Tuesday."

I completely disagree. http://content.usatoday.com/communities/dailypitch/post/2010/10/braves-fans-flock-to-first-home-playoff-game-since-05/1

Braves fans had become accustomed to postseason appearances during the team's recent run of 14 consecutive trips to the playoffs. Attendance for playoff games during the period, which ended in 2005, often suggested apathy.

But Sunday, 53,284 filled Turner Field for a sellout for Game 3 of Atlanta's Division Series against the San Francisco Giants, which San Francisco won 3-2 to take a 2-1 lead in the best-of-5 series.

The turnout was a major improvement over several recent postseason games, cited by the Associated Press, such as the 40,590 the Braves drew for their first home Division Series game against the Astros in 2005, and the 41,464 against the Astros in 2004. In 2002, when the Braves opened the postseason against the Giants, attendance for the first home game was 41,903.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------

Turner Field has a capacity of 50,000. So while they failed to sell out playoff games in the last years of their 14 year run, it was nowhere near half empty.

People who don't know Atlanta do not realize that the stadiums are poorly located in relation to their fan base. The stadiums really need to be in the north end of the city, close to the suburbs. By being south of downtown, it really limits who can attend games, even in a city of that size.

I do believe Atlanta has great fans. They just are too far away from the stadiums.

I'm sorry, but not selling out MLB playoff games is just terrible. I was stunned at how many empty seats I've seen for playoff games. And in terms of stadium locale, that's a major reason why the Expos were doomed. Olympic Stadium was in a HIDEOUS part of the city.

I guess thats a major difference between a non-hockey market and a hockey market. Non hockey markets can't have non-committed ownership. The Leafs were run into the ground by a terrible owner (Harold Ballard), The Sabres were on the verge a few times. Hell Bill Wirtz did the same to the Blackhawks, but in all cases, the market was strong enough to overcome crappy teams and lousy owners.

I heard after the presser that the NHL would make the name available for TNSE if they decide to use it.

Wow did Jeff Schultz unload on Bettman today...

http://blogs.ajc.com/jeff-schultz-blog/2011/05/31/thrashers-atlanta-were-never-given-a-chance/

This is how it ends: With the weasel of a commissioner not stepping foot in the city, with another season passing without a playoff game, with a lying ownership group maintaining it did all it could to save a franchise that in reality it spent most of seven years wrecking.

Atlanta has lost an NHL expansion team to a Canadian outpost for the second time. The Thrashers are going to Winnipeg just like the Flames went to Calgary in 1980. A press conference was held in Winnipeg, while the Thrashers sent out this warm-and-fuzzy news release: “The Atlanta Thrashers announced today that they have entered into an asset purchase agreement with True North Sports and Entertainment …”

This isn’t about the fans or the market or certainly Gary Bettman’s fictional “covenant” with fans, which I believe he left in the same sock drawer with his conscience. It’s about greed and abandonment, plain and simple. It’s about a disingenuous ownership group, which had long lost any semblance of credibility, serving up fans swill and gruel and then wondering why the turnstiles sleep at night.

They’ll tell you they care. They don’t. They’re walking away with a fat check. While you mourn the loss of a franchise, they’re waving goodbye with one middle finger.

The NHL is leaving a city that never really was given a chance. It’s going back to a city that it left 15 years ago and that has grown by about 60,000 people and a couple of doughnut shops since. They will be discussing this decision one day at business schools, right after the sections on Charles Ponzi and Enron.

Atlanta didn’t fail. The franchise failed. But the NHL doesn’t care about that. This is a league that survives on franchise fees and relocation fees. It collected $80 million from Ted Turner for an expansion fee in 1997. (He joked in the Board of Governors meeting that followed that he could’ve saved $70 million by purchasing the Flames from Tom Cousins for $10 million. Nobody laughed.) The league reportedly will collect another $60 million for permission to move the Thrashers to Manitoba.

In five years, when another failing franchise wants to move into Philips Arena, Bettman will be happy to collect another fat relocation fee, and he’ll deliver the same canned, phony speech about how he always believed in this market. The guy has told so many lies, it’s a wonder he’s not an Atlanta Spirit partner. (One postscript: Bettman referred to them as the “Atlantic” Spirit on Tuesday.)

There are hockey teams in Tampa and San Jose and Raleigh, and I could go on. There’s still one inexplicably in Phoenix, which the NHL is floating for another year, maybe because Bettman plans to retire and open up a pawn shop there one day. Is Atlanta an inferior market to any of those cities? Or does product have something to do with it?

There was no reason to do this now. When the Phoenix-to-Winnipeg deal fell apart, the NHL (which owns the Coyotes) was out $170 million. Bettman panicked. So he crossed out Phoenix and wrote in Atlanta. But why couldn’t he have waited a year to see if another owner for the team emerged? Winnipeg wasn’t going anywhere. Was Bettman that desperate for the $60 million?

“I have absolutely no doubt that this market can support an NHL team,” said Bob Hartley, a native Canadian, a Stanley Cup winner in Colorado and the only coach to get the Thrashers to the playoffs. “It’s a huge disappointment to see the Atlanta franchise leave before so many other cities in the league. I loved it there. My last two years in Atlanta were as exciting as what I went through in Colorado. We had only two [home] playoffs games but it was a Stanley Cup atmosphere. But Hoss [Marian Hossa] left, Kovy [llya Kovalchuk] left, I was gone. It felt like the organization was drained of its energy.”

First player: Damian Rhodes. First draft pick: Patrik Stefan. First coach: Curt Fraser. First general manager: Don Waddell. That was only the beginning. Eleven seasons: one playoff berth, no wins.

Turner was followed by AOL/Time Warner, a bad marriage that was followed by an even worse one: Atlanta Spirit, LLC. Hossa saw no future here. Kovalchuk, given so many misdirections by part-owner Bruce Levenson in negotiations, wasn’t even sure the team would stay. Both wanted out.

There never was a commitment. There never was hope. There never was a plan — at least not one that worked.

A city just lost a franchise. While you mourn, they laugh. It’s nothing less than shameful.

Yeah I read that, a few people down here have put the NHL on blast, when it seems it took less time to sell this team than it did teams like Tampa, Nashville, Buffalo... Dallas is taking forever but that's thanks to Tom Hicks bogging it down for 2 years now.

Loud sigh at the Rome hit. While not as disgusting as the Cooke hit, or Torres on Seabrook IMO, these guys have got to stop trying to kill each other on the ice. Someone raised a great point. It took a little girl dying from a puck to get nets installed at every arena to protect fans. Do we need a player to die on the ice for players to finally get it?

Maybe, but I hope not.

Congrats to a deserving champ - I'm looking at you Tim Thomas.

As for the Vancouver fans now rioting, way to show your class. Hope every last one of those idiots gets tossed in the can.

The Vancouver fans disgraced themselves in front of the whole world last night with their riots. And it didn't look like they were angry fans. They looked like they were having a great time destroying things. And when is looting ever acceptable?

A very sad day for Canadians - and I"m not talking about the Cup. I always hate that "Support Vancouver/Edmonton/Calgary/Ottawa/Montreal because they are Canadian. If they ain;t the Leafs, I'm not interested. And those fans last night sure vindicated why I couldn't get behind the Canucks. Between their goalie refusing to shut his mouth, a team with 2 or 3 cheap shot artists incapable of playing a clean game, and now this? Congrats Bruins. Vancouver showed in more ways than one they don't deserve a cup.

Must be nice to have a championship in every sport over the last 6 years.

I just didn't want the Vancouver law firm of Whining, Diving, and Embellishment winning the Stanley Cup and therefore "justifying" that kind of play.

A lot of Kings fans seem to really love this trade even though it required them to give up a top prospect.

What are your guys' thoughts on this trade from a Kings point of view?
