View Full Version : The New Yankee Stadium

So as of last night, there had been 26 HRs hit in five games (I think... don't quote me... it's something along those lines) at the new stadium in the Bronx. That's gotta be a design flaw relative to wind currents.
I wonder how the taxpayers of NY feel about footing the bill for a new $1.5 billion Wiffleball stadium.

And if the home runs continue to fly out of Yankee Stadium and pitchers' ERAs climb over 5.00, they could have as difficult a challenge in luring free-agent hurlers as the Rockies, Rangers, Reds, Phillies and Astros have had through the years. "Nobody will want to go to pitch there if it's a bandbox," one veteran Brewer said yesterday, musing about the conditions.

I think I'll always regret the fact that I never got to see the "Old" Yankee Stadium.

I saw the old one last June when Cincinnati played there. I am heading to the Yankees/Phillies game next month. Mainly to see the Hard Rock Cafe they put in there.

New Yankee stadium blows, literally and figuratively. First of all, they're charging ungodly amounts for front row seats. So much so that they're practically empty all the time. In this economy, nobody can afford those seats and corporations don't want to spend precious cash on overpriced chairs. As with almost every other arena/stadium, the best place to watch games is in the cheap seats with real fans. Methinks that those seats are regularly filled.

For me it was like a Buddhist walking into the Sistene Chapel. You feel the respect and the reverence, but you're not about to get down on your knees and start praying. :D

I'm not ready to concede to a design flaw at the new stadium. When pitchers don't hit the strike zone with the same frequency (Wang has gone from 68.2% to 47.5% since last year) teams aren't going to win games, whether it's a pitcher's park or a hitter's park.
Also, when pitchers do hit the strike zone but their pitches don't curve or drop, I am inclined to believe that the pitcher didn't have 100% of his mechanics. The Yankees do have a hole in their rotation with the retirement of Mike Mussina and Wang's recent struggles.
I am unbiased enough to concede that the Yankees are not as good as the Red Sox, and it's questionable whether or not they will be better than the Rays. However, only 15 games into the season of 162 games is too early to press the panic button.

There used to be three ballparks that I wanted to see a game in before I die and the old Yankee stadium was one of them. Now there is only two. I still want to watch a game at Wrigley Field and Fenway Park. One of these days.
I was at one of the last games played at Crosley Field in Cincinnati. That's the one before Riverfront, and yes I'm that old, and DAMN proud of it.

Same three I had always wanted to go too. Went too Wrigley in '01 and had a blast. Cubs got killed 15-4 by the Rockies in late July but Sammy Sosa hit 3 homers and had all 4 RBI's for the Cubs. Obviously won't be able to go to the old Yankee Stadium but Fenway is the other ball park I would love to go too.
And when it comes time for Fenway, I hope they renovate the park instead of tearing it down and building a new one. Fenway is probably the last historic ballpark I can think of thats left.

Wrigley... I think Wrigley and Fenway were built within a couple of years of each other.

You make a good point... after the weekend series, the Yanks' pen had the highest ERA in MLB. At least some of this may have something to do with serving up juicy fastballs right down the middle of the plate.
It's way early though, you're right. People around here were freaking out at 2-6, but after 11 straight wins they're lining up for World Series tickets.
The Yanks will be able to put up runs with anyone, especially when A-Rod is back, but they better get their pitching straightened out. The Sox look very, very strong through the rotation and in the pen, and they haven't even added (a healthy) Smoltz yet.

If they just let Brian Cashman acquire young arms and not trade them away, they would be fine. But relying on free agency every year is risky. Right now Sabathia and Burnett could be better, especially Sabathia.
