With the signing of Nate Washington this offseason, and us drafting Kenny Britt in the first round, we have a brewing competition here.

Gage will be starting on one of the outside spots. Hawkins is the slot guy. Now of course Britt and Washington will both see the field, but somebody's the odd man out when it comes to playing time. So who will get the majority of the #2 starting reps?

This isn't necessarily as "Who do you THINK will get the start" (in the most likely scenario, Washington is the starter by default due to his NFL experience) but more of a "Who do you WANT to start" poll. Britt is the rookie and is prone to rookie mistakes, but IMO is the more versatile receiver. Washington is viewed by many as a one-trick pony.

So who would you rather have see the field more as our second receiver this season?

Whoever gives us the best opportunity to win.

sigh. not going to be Britt.

Don't think he is much of a factor this season, and that's too bad since the team is built to win now.

I am mostly just interested to see him perform in the preseason games.

If Britt sees significant playing time it will probably start in the slot.

I see Gage/Washington on the outside, Britt on the inside. Maybe near the end of the year or (more likely) next year they start moving Britt on the outside after he's had a chance to learn the position.

Well if Britt does what he was drafted to do, he'd be a starter.
His contract should look like this (30th pick 2008)
Contract Information for Dustin Keller

7/18/2008: Signed a five-year, $8.5 million contract. The deal includes $5.995 million guaranteed. Another $3.5 million is available through incentives. 2009: $832,500, 2010: $795,000, 2011: $927,500, 2012: $1,052,500, 2013: Free Agent

Gage's and Washignton's deals:
Contract Information for Justin Gage

2/27/2008: Signed a four-year, $14 million contract. The deal includes $6.5 million guaranteed. 2009: $2 million, 2010: $1.5 million, 2011: $3.5 million, 2012: Free Agent

Contract Information for Nate Washington

3/2/2009: Signed a six-year, $27 million contract. The deal includes $9 million guaranteed. 2009-2014: Under Contract, 2015: Free Agent

Britt is built like Gage, but I don't see him unseating Gage until Gage's contract is up after 2010. Washington is thus far a career slot WR, but will have more experience.

Hard to say, my guess is Washington will start, but move to slot in 3 WR sets, allowing Britt to be the big outside target.

Camp should be interesting! VY should get a lot of work in with him on 2nd team, could be good for both of them. Or bad.

I really can't say who I prefer, haven't seen them yet. I don't think our WR corps sucks anymore though!

I am thinking Britt, Gage, and Washington will be the top 3 receivers. Hawkins will likely be the odd man out.

I think all 3 - Gage, Washington, and Britt will be on the field most of the time and have plenty of opportunities to contribute....But Nate Washington came here to be a starter, and I fully expect him to do so. When the time comes, Britt will probably eventually overtake Gage into the starting spot...For now:

1. Gage
2. Washington
3. Britt
4. Hawkins
5. Davis/Someone we draft in one of these late rounds
6. Probably someone we draft in one of these late rounds.

It's that #87 curse.

The Titans coaching staff would be smart to put Washington in the slot on three receiver packages. Washington is familiar with playing the slot in Pittsburgh but my thinking is to find mismatches & Nate on a nickle or dime corner would be a mismatch. The Patriots do this alot with Welker on there three receiver packages & the Steelers ofter put Hines Ward in the slot.

Hawkins wont be a starter unless he greatly improves this offseason. Ive read articles in which it was clear the Titans havent been too impressed.

Nate was brought in not to make huge numbers but, to use his speed to stretch the defense and keep them honest. He will do this quite well and only needs the occasional deep ball to remain effective.

Kenny Britt will start right away because the titans clearly feel they need a big body reciever starting now. They will throw him out there to sink or swim. - "We feel like he's what we've been missing in our passing game," coach Jeff Fisher said of Britt.

Justin Gage will most likely be the #1 unless Britts raw talent overshadows him. Britt is supposed to be a good route runner so he should pick up the system quickly.

I think you will see mix and match. I think we will see britt in there a lot during rushing plays/short yardage possesion plays/redzone. nate washington will be good in the outiside when we want to stretch the field or maybe good for crossing routes ect.

lavelle hawkins probably knows just about as much of the playbook as britt does if what I have read about him is true.

if lavelle was showing great strides, I doubt we would have taken a WR in the first

Lavelle Hawkins may not even make the final roster. He didn't impress with his route running and playbook knowledge last year. If he's not totally committed himself to fixing those issues, he'll find himself in free agency.

Gage and Washington will be starters, but I wouldn't be totally surprised to see the Titans use more 3-wide receiver sets if Britt is up to speed quickly.
