Pick Analysis: The Titans nab one of the most underrated cover corners in the draft. Mouton is a scrappy player with outstanding feet and ball skills. His aggressive nature fits in well with the Titans' secondary.

hmm.. ESPN says:
Mouton shows excellent awareness and flashes the ability to make plays in coverage. He isn't afraid to step up in run support, either. The problem is he doesn't have great physical tools. He's 5-9, 187 pounds and runs 4.56 in the 40. All this means he doesn't have as much upside as some of the other corner prospects in this class.
Not that I put a lot of stock into what ESPN says...
After reading a bit more, I don't put any stock in what ESPN says. Good pick!

He ran a 4.48 Forty according to NFL.com

I'd rather him have the awareness/ability and no physical tools than the other way around. You can always get stronger and faster, but you can't teach instincts.
Just look at Chris Henry.

Greetings Titan fans,
I'm a pure chiefs fan but i live in Hawaii and have been going to games since i was 5, i also worked as a sports editor for one of our papers for a year and a half so i'm familiar with a lot of our local players.
That said, Mouton is a great player, a pure playmaker. I didn't think he would get drafted this high but i'm glad he is going to somewhere like Tennessee i honestly feel he is going to be a great player for you. He is extremely quick, lacks height but makes up for it in technique, when he was injured for Hawaii the defense wasn't the same at all, he can also return kicks on special teams.
I'd be glad to say a few more words about him but just to let you know from a Hawaiian fan's point of view i think you got a great corner.
I have to believe that with Reinfeldt, Cecil, and Fisher all being DBs, they know secondary talent when they see it. I'm real excited about our new DBs.

somebody told him he just came off an injury and he's way faster than the 40 times and other drills he posted at the combine and at his pro day.
if that's the case, I'm even more excited about this pick

When I saw this pick I was happy. At the same time I imagined a number of Titans fans being upset that it wasn't DJ Moore. I remember quite a few people who wanted us to take DJ in the first round and I knew he was still available when we made this pick in the late 3rd round.. Seeing how far he actually fell I'm glad you guys don't make our picks. :p

04/23/2009 - In preparation for this weekend's National Football League draft, Ryan Mouton will participate in one of Texas' Friday traditions. The former University of Hawai'i cornerback will play football. Joe Baker, who coaches defensive backs for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, will conduct a private workout for Mouton at Katy (Texas) High School. Mouton is an intriguing prospect. He was the most talented cornerback in his two seasons in Hawai'i, although his playing time was limited because of injuries and circumstances. In 2007, he endured a partially torn posterior cruciate ligament. In 2008, he was used at slotback and nickelback, as well as his natural position of cornerback. He also overcame an ankle injury. Mouton's offseason performances collectively improved his draft status. He played well in January's East-West Shrine Game despite suffering a hamstring injury. At the NFL Scouting Combine in Indianapolis in February, Mouton, who is 5 feet 9, had a vertical jump of 39 1/2 inches and broad jump of 10 feet 9. He aggravated his left hamstring three-quarters of the way into the 40-yard dash, finishing in an unofficial 4.48 seconds. At the UH Pro Day earlier this month in Carson, Calif., Mouton had a broad jump of 11 feet. But he again aggravated his left hamstring halfway through the 40-yard dash. He was timed in 4.42 seconds. The question for NFL scouts: Is the sum equal to the parts of three standout performances? - Stephen Tsai, Hawaii Warrior Beat
04/03/2009 - Hawaii Pro day: Hawaii cornerback Ryan Mouton suffered the same fate at his Pro Day today (held at the Home Depot Center in Los Angeles) that limited him at the Combine over a month ago -- a pulled hamstring. Still, the 5'09, 187 pound cornerback flashed some eye-popping explosion by dropping his 40-yard dash time from 4.51 seconds at the Combine to 4.46 seconds Thursday. So why did five-hundredths of a second rate as a significant improvement? Because Mouton, according to scouts in attendance, pulled up with the hamstring at about the 30 yard mark in the event and still posted a 4.46 second time. Had the injury not occurred, he likely would have been in the low to mid 4.3s... Mouton's explosiveness was on display in the broad jump, where he leapt 11'0 -- a mark beaten only by potential first round pick Darius Butler (Connecticut) among the cornerbacks tested at the Combine. - Rob Rang, The SportsXchange, NFLDraftScout.com
The injury history is concerning. He's said to run in the 4.2's when healthy. His times weren't that bad considering the hammy. The other measurables look great.

MOUTON IS NEXT:
With their own third round pick, five spots after trading a future pick for Jared Cook, the Titans finally addressed the cornerback situation with Hawaii’s Ryan Mouton.
“We also had several corners on the board and we got the one we wanted,” Titans coach Jeff Fisher said of Mouton.
The Titans did some extra work in evaluating Mouton, sending defensive backs coach Marcus Robertson to Houston, Mouton’s hometown, to work him out just before the draft. Mouton, who had run a 4.48 time in the 40-yard dash previously, had injured his hamstring at the NFL Combine in February and again at his pro day workout, leaving questions about him to be answered.
“Ryan pulled a hamstring at the Combine, and reinjured it during his workout,” Fisher said. “We sent Marcus Robertson down to see him on Friday, and he was very, very impressed with the workout. We’re very, very impressed with Ryan the person. We’re fortunate to get a corner that we think can add kickoff return skills. In addition, he’s got very, very good skills and a good football player.”
Mouton said he knew the Titans were interested in him from the workout he had. Most had projected him as a fourth-rounder, but he knew the Titans picking near the end of every round probably would take him in the bottom of round three.
“I felt that they were very interested, but I didn’t know exactly where they would pick me,” Mouton said. “I had heard fourth round with a couple of other teams. Tennessee, when they talked to my agent, he said they were really, really interested, and he told me they were the most interested.
“Looking at the fourth round and the teams that were also interested, we knew it would have to be earlier than [the fourth for the Titans].”
Being from Houston, Mouton has a connection to Titans quarterback Vince Young, attending the same elementary school. Mouton said his older brother is friends with Young, but that he “knows of” the quarterback.
Mouton, 5-9, 187, can play as a nickelback or on the outside and is also a kick returner.
Mouton even played some on offense for the Warriors with eight catches for 71 yards.
The Titans are in need of depth at cornerback behind starters Cortland Finnegan and Nick Harper, with only Cary Williams and DeMarcus Faggins behind them.

Marcus Robertson, who coaches the Tennessee Titans' defensive secondary, said he expects Ryan Mouton to contribute this season and then compete for a "starting job in 2010."
Mouton, a former UH defensive back, was the Titans' third-round pick this past weekend.
Robertson attended Mouton's workout at Katy High School in Texas the past Friday. Robertson wanted to check on Mouton's health.
Mouton suffered a pulled left hamstring during the East-West Shrine game in January. He aggravated the injury while running the 40-yard dash at the NFL Scouting Combine in February and the April 2 UH Pro Day.
But a biodex test, which measures the strength in the hamstrings and quadriceps, showed Mouton's left leg was at 93 percent. "We're not worried about that," said Robertson, who strongly recommended drafting Mouton.
"He has great burst, and he's tough," Robertson said. "He plays bigger than his size. He's a vicious hitter. He makes plays. I think he's going to make as much of an impact for us as our first pick."
The Titans have two aggressive cornerbacks, but Nick Harper will be 34 this year.
