For a man from Santa Claus, Ind., Jay Cutler is one of the least jolly people you've ever met.
If he's not The Most Hated Man in the NFL, he's in the running. His expression is usually that of a man wearing sandpaper underwear. He looks everywhere but into your eyes. It's a tie as to which he enjoys more -- smirking or shrugging.
Jay Cutler is no teddy bear (http://sports.espn.go.com/espn/news/story?id=6017986)

If you were in the running for most turnovers in the league two years in a row, you wouldn't be too happy either.... or maybe it's something about the class of 2006?

I wonder what he was like at Vandy and before?
I have heard a couple stories about him... he pretty much has always been a prick.

Philip Rivers is probably trash-talking to Cutler's image on his TV screen. Rivers played against the Patriots with a shredded knee. Unless Cutler is hurt worse than that, he's going to take quite a blow to his reputation for not completing this game.

You know, Caleb Hanie (the Bears third stringer) showed some real promise today, apart from the two picks. He at least managed to score two TD's and almost managed to tie the game. But when his relatives go searching for headlines for him...they will mostly see Cutler schizzle. What I don't get is why they played Collins (the 2nd stringer) at all because he struggled vs. Carolina this year. I often wonder about these things and wonder if the game would have been more competitive if they had truly pulled Cutler earlier...oh well. Cutler played a great game vs. the Seahawks. But the Seahawks Defense is not the Packers Defense.
Given Cutler's "personality" + his poor performance today = not good for him, his critics will eat him alive tomorrow during the radio spots. One thing I did notice is that Cutler was throwing off of his back foot a lot. It seemed like all of the stuff the coaches had been working on him all season long got thrown out the window when he got hurried.

They played Collins in hopes that Cutler could come back in. The second Hanie came in neither Cutler or Collins could return to the game and I'm thinking they were holding out some hope that the leader of their team would act like a leader and tough it out.

Yeah...it is just Collins performance vs. Hanie's made me wonder why Hanie was the third stringer and not the second. All in all...it was a pretty boring game. I just have never been sold on Cutler. But I am also careful to note that the jury is still out on him. I admit I took a nap in the mjiddle of the game and when I saw Cutler on the sideline not playing I was curious..then they said injury but he didn't appear to be hurt or limping. I guess if they really wanted Cutler back in they could have told Hanie to fall down and act hurt...but I thought Hanie played as good as he possibly could under the circumstances and against that defense.

If Jay could have come back into the game physically and play better than the backups, he would have. He is one very tough quarterback, ask Brian Urlacher. Ask anyone who played with him at Vandy. I don't think he has a reputation as a quitter like another quarterback I know.

People are way to anxious to lable players with the "quitter" tag. I'm certainly no fan of Jay Cutler, don't like his personallity and think he's over-rated as a QB, but I would never jump to the "quitter" interpretation when someone is injured. And I especially wouldn't lable a guy that way who is tough enough to be a starting QB on an NFL team while also dealing with Type I Diabetes. If his medical staff didn't want him playing then he's not responsible for the Coach following the medical advice. Of course, if he got outwardly angry about it AFTER the game then everyone would say he was having a tantrum. These guys just can't win. Fans, press, have it both ways.

...and it looks like the media and some NFL players had to chime in too:
Fellow NFL players questioned Cutler's toughness on Twitter during the game, and ESPN analyst and former Super Bowl-winning QB Trent Dilfer called him out after the game.
"You can play this position (QB) hurt," Dilfer said on ESPN. "Some of us have."
-snip-
Players such as Jaguars RB Maurice Jones-Drew and Cardinals DT Darnell Dockett suggested on Twitter that Cutler had let his teammates down.
On Twitter, Jones-Drew and Dockett were among several players who commented on Cutler's status.
Said Jones-Drew: "Hey I think the urban meyer rule is effect right now... When the going gets tough........QUIT.. ... All I'm saying is that he can finish the game on a hurt knee... I played the whole season on one..."
Said Dockett: "If I'm on chicago team jay cutler has to wait till me and the team shower get dressed and leave before he comes in the locker room!"
I see an interesting week comin' up...
At least he didnt have a confrontation with Lovie Smith in the locker room after the L.....

I guess some bear fans have to point the finger at someone. If he had a reputation for quitting I might agree, but it is just the opposite. As for players from other teams chiming in, that is a joke. Maurice needs to keep his mouth shut, it was not HIS knee that was hurt. Better yet, let Maurice ask Urlacher what he thinks, he might put Maurice in the hospital.

I feel bad for him and anyone that gets slammed by social media like that. It's instant and compels or requires an instant response when the media and players bring it into the locker room. How can anyone get their thoughts together in an instant?
By the way, I tore my knee up and had it rebuilt years ago. I didn't know when it happened either because my endorphins are very healthy and did their job.

Now I get another ESPN alert that says Lovie Smith says it is a sprained MCL. Someone at ESPN needs to get their stuff together.. Either way, the way the Bears' center described his leg in the huddle, it was bad. He said it was just shaking and he didn't think he would be back but he came back the next series and said it was just swinging like something was torn.

Cutler cried when told about player's criticism of his toughness
By Chris Chase
When Jay Cutler(notes) was told that other players around the league had questioned his effort and toughness in the wake of the recently discovered sprained MCL he suffered in the NFC championship game, the Chicago Bears quarterback showed a side of himself we haven't much seen: vulnerability.
Jim Trotter writes on SI.com:
Cutler appeared genuinely hurt when asked about the comments, saying: "No comment on that." He then turned his back to reporters, fiddled with some things on a shelf and bit his lip as tears welled. He had been battered and beaten during the early part of the season[. ...] Yet he never complained or pulled himself.
Though some have already used Cutler's tears to prove their point that he's a wimp, shouldn't the opposite hold true? (This isn't elementary school. We should know by now that crying isn't necessarily a sign of weakness.) If I was someone who doubted Cutler's injury (and I'm not), the fact that he cried about it would indicate to me that he cared more than I thought. An apathetic man doesn't tend to cry. A quitter would probably feel the need to defend himself. Those tears suggest he's neither of those things.
[Related: See the tweets of other NFL players attacking Cutler]
MJD is right when he says it was unfair to call Cutler a quitter without knowing the full extent of his injury. And now that we know it was an MCL sprain that didn't fully rupture, it's still not fair to speculate whether he could have played. Some have suggested that he could have gone on the injured knee because other people have done so in the past. That's ridiculous. It's like saying he should be able to run under 10 seconds in the 100-meter dash because Usain Bolt can. Everyone has different limitations. If doctors, trainers and Cutler himself didn't think he could go, shouldn't that be enough? (And that's what reportedly happened. Doctors advised Cutler not to go back in the game but he did anyway. He pulled himself when he realized he couldn't plant.)

He still should have gotten involved on the sidelines. He was able to walk around without issue (was probably in pain) and continued to walk around throughout the game, so he was perfectly able to talk with the 3rd string QB and help him with what he had learned about the Steelers defense. He was also able to help cheer on his teammates.
He chose to mope around and stick to himself the rest of the game. He chose the wrong way of handling his injury.

I guess I was seeing things, I could have sworn I saw him talking to the other two quarterbacks some. BTW, nothing wrong cheering on his backup when he did well, and standing on the sideline is not the same as being in the game and taking a hit that could end his career, and he did come back in against the doctors' advice! How would that benefit the team if he did further damage? IMO, some idiot players like 'Maurice' tweeted before they thought, then the media thought they had a chance to pile on. Of course some fans did the same thing. If he had a reputation for quitting, I might agree, but he doesn't. He took a beating at Vandy and NEVER complained and he was and still is a very good quarterback. He doesn't deserve any of the bashing he has gotten. His personality may not be the best, but he plays with heart! I read where Urlacher sometime during the season knocked his cellphone out of his hand because he was texting while Urlacher was talking to him. So I don't think Urlacher would be standing behind him if he didn't believe in him.
As pointed out by Jones, that was Lynch back in Denver that knocked the cell phone out of his hand. But it doesn't change anything, Urlacher would not be standing up for him if he didn't believe in him.

I don't like Jay's personality and never root for him or his team, but I think the bashing he's taken on this is waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay out of line. I don't get why people want to persecute other people. I think the over-the-top critics are demonstrating their own bad traits - judging harshly without knowing the facts - rather than legittmately pointing out Jay's weaknesses. Frankly, of all the negative traits I'd assign to Jay, being a quitter would never make the list. I saw the game where he was sacked 9 times, one of the worst beatings I ever saw a QB take. This "controversy" today just reminds me of why I'm less and less attracted to sports media - it emphases the negative brings out the worst in a lot of people.
