Almost every game is a must-win right now. It was an impressive display against the Sharks, but as I type this the Preds are in a 3-3 fight with the Kings. The Kings are a team that the Preds should beat every time.

Yeah, the Preds pull out a 4-3 OT win vs. the Kings. Now they can go to Detroit and face an angry team that lost 2-0 to the NHL bottom-kings, the N.Y. Islanders.

I just wonder how long the Preds can keep winning with all these serious injuries piling up.

If the Preds beat Columbus, could the Blue Jackets be in trouble to make the playoffs? It seemed liked they were a sure thing not too long ago, but they are just barely ahead of the pack.

http://www.nhl.com/ice/newsprint.htm?id=413750

According to the Elias Sports Bureau, only one time in the expansion era has every team from the same division made the playoffs. It's only happened in 1980-81, when the entire Adams Division -- Buffalo, Boston, Minnesota, Quebec and Toronto -- made it into the top 16.

At that time, the NHL playoffs were made up of the top 16 teams in the 21-team league.

Yea, O'reilly (spelling) has done real well since being called up and Santerelli had been played real well for Milwaukee before being called up. Had a hat trick for the Admiral's before coming to Nashvile. I'm liking these young players but don't think we can rely on them these last 5 games.

Going to be an interesting finish in both conferences.

Their goaltenders can't stop a bus.... it's going to be a quick playoffs for them.

They have been saying that about the Red Wings almost every year, and almost every year they prove us all wrong. 4 cups speak volumes....2 with Osgood, 1 with Vernon and 1 with Hasek? None of which played great in net IIRC.

The difference between the Wings and most other teams is the higher margin of error they have with their netminders - they can overcome a ****ty goal while most other teams get buried when that happens.

Jones31
04-04-2009, 09:57 AM
You know.... I said they same thing last year, difference in this year and last, Hasek couldn't stop anything, Osgood could. This year.... neither Conklin or Osgood have been able to stop the bleeding. They can score to overcome some but this year I just don't feel it.

They have 107 frigging points and are defending champs. I'm not sold that they're done, even though I acknowledge Osgood/Conklin isn't exactly Roy/Brodeur back there. That said, it's a very smart team that IMO knows how to pace itself and be ready for April.

Preds lose 4-2, playoff hopes hanging by a thread. Minnesota winning along with St. Louis leading 4-1 as I type this does not help Nashville's cause. Preds are going to have to win and get St. Louis losses to make the playoffs. Not looking promising.

I don't follow NHL like I do the NFL, so my opinion is based wholly on what I saw last night without knowing any details. Kind of like someone commenting on how crappy the Titans are, not knowing about injuries, etc. :D

Last night's team had no rhythm. Their passing looked terrible. It was like they had no awareness of their teammates location. I swear the Blackhawks had eyes in the back of their heads.

The Preds definitely played over their heads since the All-Star break. It would sure be nice to see this team make a play for Marian Gaborik. Though I do have concerns over his ability to stay healthy. I just remember how Pavel Bure's arrival brought life to a moribund Florida Panthers franchise.

Red Wings vs Predators

Must win obviously.

Yep. Here is my understanding on how the Preds can get in. One of the following needs to happen:

1. Win both games AND Blues gain 2 points or less in final 2 games. (Preds would have "most wins" tiebreaker)
2. Win both games AND have Ducks gain 1 or 0 points in final 2 games (Ducks have tiebreaker, so Preds have to beat them outright).
3. Win and OT loss AND Blues gain 1 or 0 points in final 2 games. (Even if Wild tie the Preds, the Preds have the tiebreaker)
4. Win and OT loss AND Ducks gain 0 points in final 2 games. (Even if the Wild tie the Preds, the Preds have the tiebreaker)
5. Win just one AND Blues gain 0 points in final 2 games AND (the Wild get less than 3 points OR the Wild lose in OT to the Preds )

The Preds cannot make the playoffs with two OT losses (Blues still have head-to-head tiebreaker if they lost out).

Update: Forget what I said about goal differential. Minnesota wins that tiebreaker because it is based on goals scored vs. goals allowed.

Just remember if Anaheim loses it will be a help to both us and STL.

So true.

The Preds and Blues both get in over the Ducks in the following scenarios:
1. Preds get at least a point against Minnesota, Blues get at least a point in last two games, and Ducks lose out (zero points).

2. The Preds beat the Wild, Blues get at least 2 points, and Ducks gain one point or less in last two games.

3. The Preds beat the Wild, Blues get at least 3 points, and Ducks have two OT losses or worse. Preds would have the same number of wins as the Ducks, and the Preds have the head-to-head tiebreaker with the Ducks.

I can deal with this year my expectations were down with the Bolts and possibly Islanders. I didn't think they would be in the hunt at all. Now they can fet rid of a few dead weight guys in deVries, Nichol and Fiddler. Who am I kidding Fids and Nichol probably get resigned.
They are set at defense for next year.

Apparently self-defense is a punishable offense. Everyone who's ever watched a hockey game knew what Laperriere was going to do to Lucic if he got the chance. Laperriere should be sitting with him for one game.

Maybe this makes Ron Wilson look a little better since the same players are playing the same way for a different coach? St. Louis got the benefit of numerous Predator injuries and a poor Predator start to the season, or they would have already been playing golf.

My picks for serious contenders before the playoffs were Carolina, New Jersey, and Boston in the East, and Chicago, Calgary, Vancouver, and San Jose in the West. Two of those teams will be gone in this round, and San Jose may be the likely third.

I'm hoping for Chicago to advance all the way, as they were my Western Conference team before I moved to Nashville. I still have their old home and away jerseys.

Yes, I return to work April 27. I took 2 weeks because that was our original plan; spend 10 days in Florida, then come back and have a few days to unwind before going back to work. Lisa could only get one week off, so I have another week of vacation to myself.

I already have most of it planned. Today, go to driving range and practice golf short game, followed by weight lifting and running before dinner. Tuesday, play a round of golf, run in evening with wife. Wednesday, weight lifting and to be determined. Thursday, driving range practice based on Tuesday's round, followed by afternoon doctor appointment. Friday, round of golf followed by weight lifting and running. Saturday, morning run followed by draft party at USA Sports Grill. Sunday, watch remainder of NFL draft and realize hell starts again the next day.

Why half these games aren't available on DirecTV and the other half are relegated to the subpar production that is the Versus channel is beyond me.

Pretty please, ESPN? Bring back hockey to where it belongs...or at least to a channel most of the nation actually can tune in to.

You are gonna have a long off-season. I suspect Gainey is done, and half of the team is UFA/RFA.

I really can't believe what happened either. Gainey had the makings of a powerhouse and all of a sudden, there are more questions than answers.

He built a soft team. Even though our roster was ravaged with injuries (to our very best players), there is no excuse for playing like mental lightweights. I never once saw playoff intensity from the Habs. I saw the Blues playing their hearts out when they faced a similar situation. The Blues, to be honest, are nowhere near as talented as the Habs, but they played so much better. Why? Heart. Gainey has built the Tin Man of hockey teams. With all these UFA's, we can finally get a team built for the playoffs: hard-nosed and gritty, but also not short on talent.

The biggest problem I think you face is that he and Carbo wrecked the confidence of what should be a franchise goalie. Price looked lost at times when he returned from injury - and got absolutely no help from the musical chairs they played with him.

The kid is 21 FFS and already he may face a hostile crowd every time he's between the pipes.

You need to solve the ownership issue before anyone is signed or let go. That includes Gainey's future - I have a feeling he's had enough. He sure didn't look like he's enjoyed life the last 4 months.

I did Games 2 and 3 of the Canucks/Blues - that was great hockey. Canucks did themselves a massive favor sweeping - they got pummelled by a really physical team - Murray did a great job this year - remember, they lost their best young d-man for the season too, as well as losing Brewer.

Agreed on Carey's confidence being ruined, and also on Andy Murray. The Kings should not have fired him; the Kings lack of draft depth is killing them year after year. They don't hit in the mid to late rounds enough.

Saturdays game between the Penguins and the Flyers was a lot of fun to watch. I actually didn't turn the game on until it was already 3-0 Flyers. Next thing I see is that initial fight and I could tell the Flyers were about to have some major issues. Then came the Penguins first goal which lead to a 5-5 fight and I then said this game is over. That team hasn't been built for a long run since before the 2004 run, when they ran out of gas. That team had less talent and more will/grit than any team after the lockout. That team knew what playoff hockey was all about. These teams are built for the regular season.

Is it his fault or do people look for a scapegoat?

Not his fault. The guy was willing to show his team how bad he wanted it, dropping the gloves off the opening draw against Getzlaf, after challenging him to do it in Game 6. The problem with that club is the other veteran leaders. Marleau, Cheechoo etc.

Also, it may be time to trade Nabokov and go in another direction. As good as his regular season numbers are, he rarely steals a playoff game. Hell, the oft-mentioned 'mediocre' Osgood steals playoff games here and there. I can'r recall Nabokov doing that.

I don't think this Duck team is as deep as their Stanley Cup club, and Giguere didn't let in anything. We'll see how Hiller fares in this one.

I respect the Ducks, but this Wing team is showing everyone who's boss. They seem to have perfected the art of peaking at the right time, and don't forget, they added Hossa to a team that already won the Cup.

That wasn't even bad.... he never should have made a ruling, even NHL Ops are trying to cover their ass today.

Murphy said the net twine partly obstructed an overhead view on both the Versus and TSN telecasts that might have prompted some fans to speculate LaRose had scored. "As the overhead camera view is enhanced, both the red line and the white ice become more blurred and the net meshing becomes more of an obstruction," said Murphy. "After looking at it numerous times from several different angles, I can't say with 100 percent certainty that the puck was completely over the line."
Everyone watching that game knows that call was blown.
Good thing it didn't effect the overall outcome, but this is beyond horrible.

Good thing it didn't effect the overall outcome, but this is beyond horrible.

Thus, why there are some people who don't like video replay.

I agree, it was a goal.

TORONTO -- Canadian billionaire Jim Balsillie is looking to buy the financially ailing Phoenix Coyotes and bring them to Southern Ontario.

The co-CEO of BlackBerry maker Research In Motion says his US$212.5-million offer is conditional on moving the Coyotes north of the border.

"The current team ownership asked that I table an offer to purchase the Coyotes and significant discussions resulted in an offer that is in the best interests of the franchise, the NHL, and the great hockey fans of Canada and Southern Ontario," Balsillie said in a statement Tuesday.

Yup, we broke ol Jim's umpteenth attempt to unsurp Bill Daly and Gary Bettman. Hilarious thing is that somehow, those idiots will turn down his 212M offer for a bankrupt franchise that has no fan base/support.

Why? Just to stick it to him again.

If the reports of what he's offering is true, the BOG would be foolish to not allow this sale to go through. Who else could even come close? I can't see the BOG agreeing to keep that franchise on their dime.

You don't understand what's at stake for Bettman. If this franchise is sold back to a Canadian city, Bettman's sunbelt strategy blows up in his face. Don't underestimate his ego - dating back to 1995 this has been his pride and joy - and all of those empty seats and millions and millions lost don't matter to Bettman. He's that fkn stubborn, especially when it comes to Basillie...

Oh I am aware.... remember I'm in one of those cities. Supposedly there are 3 other interested parties. The fool Eklund thinks this is all a scam anyways. I'm interested to see if Richard Rodier will come out and confirm this story. Bettman has got to give in one of these days, I can't see the BoG keeping this team afloat beyond June 30th. If the courts will take top dollar they will take it. Supposedly if the team filed bankruptcy it voids the lease with Glendale.
As far as I am concerned the NHL needs to knock off the petty sh!t and let this guy actually help the league for a change.

The blown call tonite in ANA is disgusting. I'm no Wings fan but that blown whistle call is unreal.

Sid v Ovie is everything the league could have hoped for - I think it was just the 4th time in NHL playoff history opposing players had hat tricks. That's unreal in itself, then add the fact that it was Sid v Ovie?

They couldn't write it any better.

That's a tough question for me (assuming your are talking playoffs). I usually don't pay much attention to either one, but I am somewhat intrigued by the NBA due to LeBron and also to that crazy Bulls-Celtics series. But I am also interested in the Ducks, Blackhawks, and the Caps-Penguins series.

I still won't watch much of any live playoff game on either side, but I have been watching a lot of highlights for both.

Without a doubt, the NHL. The NBA to me is borderline fixed. Watch the lakers game tonite and see how many calls Kobe gets. It's the closest thing to fixed this side of WWE. The NHL playoffs have had incredible emotion, evenly played series as well as a certain air of doubt about who is going to win. Can you say that with the NBA? Does anyone really doubt we're going to have Kobe v Lebron, come hell or David Stern's high water?

Watch game 2 of the Pens/Caps. That was as good as pro sports ever gets. Two elite athletes both at the absolute peak. Incredible theatre.

The biggest differences between Hull and Ovie?

Ovie backchecks and bodychecks, actually inviting contact. Hull never did. Ovie also creates turnovers and space for himself, and is able to fight off checks. Hull was someone that specialized in one-timers from the slot, off-wing rushes and parking himself at the side of the net on PPs.

Other than that, I also think Ovie also raises the level of his team's play in a way that I don't think Brett ever did. Hull had Oates, Joseph in his prime, Shanahan and a few others IIRC, and he never got to the conference finals until he joined a stacked Wings team. Ovie has Varlamov, Semin, Backstrom, Green and an over the hill Federov. Big big difference.

I really wish someone had the pulse of the other 29 guys right now.
Now it just sounds like this fight is just between the midget and the bald guy. A couple of years ago I'd say there was a galvanized backing by the BoG but today.... I am not sure. The PA knows they need another profitable team, the other owners know this. Come on Gary it's only going to hurt for a minute.

The dude is willing to pay over $200 million for a ****ty franchise that is losing money hand over fist and move it to the best hockey market (not Toronto, but the entire region) in the world. But Bettman can't have it happen, simply because his ego cannot handle the thought that his sunbelt strategy would go astray. That and the fact that it's Basillie.

They get 5 frigging goals on the road and 3 leads and they can't lock it down with that kind of goalie? Not only that, they led every game IIRC and blew 3rd period leads 3 times to a team that by its own admission was young/not ready etc.
