That's just sick and twisted. I don't know how Moats stayed calm dealing with that SOB. I don't know how anyone stays calm dealing with crap like that. I probably would have ended up arrested or shot.

Yeah he handled it much better than I would have. Saw on the news last night where DFW police made an apology.
Its sad. Really sad.

I don't care what excuse is made, nor do I care what rationalization is used. Face the facts. If Moats has looked like me, this incident neve happens. :nono

The webcam of that incident was very troubling. Here's the statement from the new NFLPA chief:
“I expressed my condolences to Ryan’s family and I am very sorry for their loss. I have also spoken with the Dallas Police Dept about their continued investigation of this matter and appreciated their swift reaction with respect to this incident. We stand by to offer any assistance asked of us and Mr. Moats’ family. I have asked that NFLPA Executive Committee member Mark Bruener, who played for the Houston Texans last season, and Texans Player Reps Chester Pitts and Kris Brown serve as the liaison between the NFLPA and the family.”

This is a terribly sad story.
I watched this video last night and it made me furious! This cop was way out of line, he should be fired! He could have let Moats go on up and left the ticket on his windshield or something. Even after being told by the nurse that his mother-in-law was dying, the cop just kept on and on lecturing Moats. i would have slapped him silly!

I understand that the officer is presently on paid administrative leave whilst this mess is being reviewed.
My hat is off to Mr. Moates. He handled himself well in a very bad situation.

I agree that the officer definitely made a HUGE mistake and that this is really sad, but in his defense don't you think he hears stories like this all the time from people who he pulls over that are BS ?

Probably out on the interstate or on the streets, but when you're in the hospital parking lot and a nurse is even coming out to confirm the truth, the cop should have let him go on in.

I dunno about you guys but hell, my mother in law can go. Shes such a nice person anyways. Beside who likes their in laws that much. If I were Ryan Moats I would have just kept going. Screw it, hes already close to being shot for stopping. Being me, I probably could have gotten there to see her in her final moments. I'm sure that cop was from Jacksonville, he sounds like a dumb ass.

he was at the hospital.
as was pointed out the fool kept it up even after first a security guard and then a nurse came down to confirm the story.
also the wife running into the hospital crying telling him her mom was dying might yet be a clue.
even cops will warn you about how some young new to the force cops will act.
they are in a phase of trying to show the world they have the power and dont have their minds wrapped around protect and serve.
you hope they either grow up or leave the force before something bad like this happens.
the cop outright lied. he told moats at the end if moats had just explained the situation things would have been different.
well no considering moats and the rest of the family with him all were telling him.
and the worse part that upset me today.
in the dallas morning news were it was reporting how the dallas police apologised it also said the cop still believes he did nothing wrong.
either he gets through his head soon what he did wrong or he dosnt need to be out on the beat again.

Sad story.

I seriously wanted to jump through the screen and knock some sense into that asswipe. He's the same age as I am (25), and if I acted like that just because I have the "power" to do so, I'd kick my own ass.

Updated: Officer Robert Powell and his wife have updated their MySpace pages in response to the intense criticism from this story.
Robert Powell - "All I can do is HOLD MY HEAD UP HIGH n wait for this to blow over. Thanks to everyone that standing behind me n helping me get through this.Love U Honey!!!!"
Wife Jody Powell - "I f***ing hate the media....they love to f***ing screw peoples lives up. Honey I Love U n things will get better. F*** anyone that believes the media"

Unbelievable... like the people need the media to tell them that what happened was wrong. It's pretty obvious to everyone but you two...

Bingo.
I don't need the media to tell me what happened was wrong. The video from his on-board camera does just fine, thank you.

No offense to any of my southern friends, but I can picture her being one of those who go into WalMart in her bath-robe and flip-flops, hair in curlers, with a cancer-stick hanging out the corner of her mouth.

Interesting new twist:
Maritza Thomas, the wife of NFL linebacker Zach Thomas, saw a familiar face as she watched the video of Officer Robert Powell detaining Houston Texans running back Ryan Moats as he and his family rushed to a hospital to see a dying loved one. That face was Powell's.
On July 27, 2008, while her husband was at training camp with the Cowboys in Oxnard, Calif., Maritza Thomas was pulled over by Powell for an illegal U-turn near NorthPark Center.
Maritza Thomas was issued five tickets by Powell, four of which were later dismissed. Thomas was handcuffed, placed in the back of a police cruiser, spent about three hours in the Dallas County Jail and was threatened with the possibility of spending the night behind bars.
Also Online
"This in no way compares to what happened to Ryan Moats and his family," said Zach Thomas, who played for the Cowboys last season and is now a free agent. "But we wanted to tell our story, not knowing how many others have been affected by Officer Powell. We know the vast majority of the Dallas police force are good and professional people, but this guy just seems excessive."

Unbelievable... like the people need the media to tell them that what happened was wrong. It's pretty obvious to everyone but you two...
as bobcat pointed out it was his own onboard video that is doing the job.
has anyone posted the video to the myspace page yet.:D
evidently this guy has been a rouge element for awhile now.
and zach's wife is hispanic.
yeah the possibility that this guy is on some type of racist power trip against minorities who seem to be well off starts to rear its ugly head.
what is even worse zach's wife had her mom with her and well..
According to Maritza Thomas, a pharmacist with no prior criminal record, Powell would not accept the explanation of where the proper paperwork was before she was taken to jail. Her mother, Teresa Lozano, who was making her first trip to Dallas and speaks little English, was forced to ride with the tow truck driver when the car was impounded. She later posted bail for her daughter's release.
"My mom was begging for him to let her go to the apartment that was five minutes away to get the paperwork," Maritza Thomas said. "He unbuckled his holster, and she got scared."
it is going to be interesting just seeing how many more people start coming forward about this cop.
the bad part is most cops especially veteran cops are not like this.
but this inexperienced clown is on a power trip making them look bad.

Let me start off by saying when the cop should have realized there was an emergency when the vehicle turned into the hospital.
I have been in law enforcement for less than a year and I can assure you that power has not gone to my head. A vehicle stop is a very scary situation for an officer. You have no idea who is in the vehicle. The cadets I went through the academy with were all about protect and serve. My job is a little different from your normal cops. I am a Park Ranger and I don't deal with near as much as the local Sheriff and PD, but I have all the respect in the world for these guys. From time to time they do make mistakes and abuse their power, but for the most part they are good people. Unfortunately we only hear about the ones that make the mistakes. These guys have to keep their guard up 24-7. Just last summer we had an officer shot and killed in a neighboring county. This may offend some people here, but I am going to say it any way. It's better to be tried by 12 than carried by six. Once again I think the officer in question is wrong.

That psychological testing is a joke. Some of the questions asked make absolutely no sense. Here are few:
Do you drink to much water?
Do you like flowers?
Do you hear voices other people don't hear?
Do you like fire?
Do you wish you were a girl?
Do you wish you were a boy?
My answer to all of them: Only when I am drinking to much water!
Many of the questions were asked multiple times during the test.

Ryan and Tamishia Moats have a lot of class. I'm not so sure I would have been as forgiving.
