View Full Version : 2008 Playoff teams that won't make it back

You can take this into a serious discussion, but I wanted to point out who will miss the playoffs based on pure history and trends. It has nothing to do with how I feel about these teams.
1. Arizona Cardinals. 7 of the last 8 Super Bowl losers have missed the playoffs the following year. If the curse can affect even the mighty Patriots, it certainly will strike down the Cards.
2. Atlanta Falcons. They have been in existence since 1966. In those 40+ years, they have never had two playoff seasons in a row.
3. Tennessee Titans. Coach Fisher has led the Oilers/Titans for 14 full seasons. In that time, he has never had a team reach the playoffs 3 years in a row. :ohmy
4. Baltimore Ravens. Since the 2000-2001 seasons, the Ravens haven't had back-to-back playoff seasons.
5. Minnesota Vikings. Their pattern since 2000 - make playoffs, miss, miss, miss They are like the Olympics. :lol

This season will be the one...

The Titans really do have the opportunity to break a lot of negative trends this year.
1. The playoff streak
2. The 6 game losing streak to the Chargers
3. Being winless in Seattle, San Francisco, New England, and NY (at least against the Jets)
4. Super Bowl Champions winning at home on opening day.
The Titans also have never won their division two years in a row.

Interesting info 309. Maybe I'm a big homer, or maybe this is a huge rationalization (not that there's anything wrong with that) but I'm not sure you can compare the current Titans to teams of the past. I look at the current team as a solid team with good depth that values solid dependable production from all areas. I really believe this team can break those past trends.

All I am putting out there is what has happened in the past. From a logical point of view, it should have no impact on how a team does this year. But sports seem to have some very weird "coincidences" that are curse-like.
The good news is that if Vandy can win a bowl game and have a winning season, bad trends can be overcome. :thumbsup

There's always a chance to break trends...negative trends. I think that the Titans have a chance of gold to be considered more seriously if they dominate again in 2009.
What was costly in that matter, was when we didn't fill expectations by not getting to the Super Bowl in the 2000-01 season...when the "experts" considered us a legimit team to get the Championship.
Not that I care, is just something that I percieved since then.

I don't disagree with any of these.
The Cardinals are not only the Super Bowl loser but play in the NFC West where San Francisco and Seattle should be more competitive this year than last. They'll also have the pressure of being somewhat of a target.
Atlanta plays in the NFC South. Recent trends indicate that the winner of this division will be New Orleans. Since that division was created the team who finishes last one year wins it the next with the exception of Atlanta last year who made the playoffs and competed for the division title most of the season.
The Titans overachieved last year and were fortunate to see New England, Indy, and San Diego struggle. The real Titans showed up in the playoffs. They may squeak in as a wildcard but I wouldn't be surprised to see the team fall back to the 9-7 type of season they should have had last year.
The Ravens were another team to take advantage of a weak AFC last year.
If the Vikings can get some decent QB from Favre and AP stays healthy, they can break their Olympian streak.

I know that I am comparing apples to oranges here...but if the Red Sox can break their trend (curse) by finally beating the Yankees...the Titans can too. Belief is part of being...belief is part of success. IMO our defense last year believed they could pull this one off...not so sure about the offensive side of the ball. But yes...Titans...we can...We can win. Look at the Rockets right now. If they win 2nite...12 years...without much happening in the playoffs...we can. We be winners ya'll. I thank the University of Texas for my fine grammar and optimisim. :D

Well you just gave Hookem an opportunity for a graceful entry into this thread.

As much as I want the Titans to win, I suspect the Titans team than finished the last six games of the season last year 3-3 was the real team. The team that lost to the Houston Texans was not Super Bowl worthy - not to mention the losts to the Jets just before the Jets self-destructed and the half hearted game lost to the Colts. In the playoffs, we could only score ten points and never looked in control of the game at all.

Nope, the record IS the team. If you are going to do that, the entire season is not real either, because ALL teams have things go for/against them during the season. It still counts.:)

Have to disagree. The end result is the real team. The Titans were exposed as an overachieving, opportunistic team who took advantage of several breaks in scheduling, the rest of the division not being as competitive as it was initially believed, and the struggles of the top teams in the conference. In the end they were derailed by a Baltimore team that was equally opportunistic and overachieving. This team went 3-4 down the stretch when it counted most with a one and done in the playoffs. I expect more of the same this season.

I saw a team that dominated the eventual Superbowl winners, and dominated the playoff game they lost. Lost because of the execution of a couple of players at very inopportune times. I didn't see them "exposed"
I don't disagree that the end result is the team., but that's not what you said.
The rules are the most points win, with no allowance for any sort of circumstances, playing up/down or how we "feel" about it. That's for talk shows and internet forums.:D
All teams are opportunistic, the good ones at least.:D

I wanted to look back on this thread.
My Vikings prediction was my weakest one, and this was before Favre. They will obviously make the playoffs.
The Cardinals are looking really good to break the Super Bowl losers curse. They have a 3 game lead with 6 games to go.
The other three predictions are looking reasonable, however. Atlanta started off 4-1, and now have lost 4 of their last 5 games. The Titans still need a miracle to reach the playoffs. And the Ravens seem stuck at .500.

Don't pat yourself on the back just yet. It's not even Thanksgiving and two of your misses are locks. Atlanta will get in as well imo.
