View Full Version : 2001 - let's avoid a repeat

The Titans were very successful in 1999 and 2000, and fan's expectations were very high going into the 2001 season. Here is my look back at that season, what went so wrong, and how the Titans can try to avoid a letdown like that this year.

First, it all started with a toe. Eddie George had turf toe all that year, which led to his lowest rushing output as a Titan (939 yards on 315 carries and 5 TDs).

Second, the defense fell apart both figuratively and literally. Blaine Bishop was lost after 4 games, and the most of the starters missed games due to injury during the year. The secondary was extremely hard hit, which led to their #31 ranking against the pass.

It was a frustrating year game-by-game. The Dolphins smacked the Titans around in the home opener 31-23 (3 INT by McNair, 1 for a TD).

Then 9-11 happened, so week 2 games were rescheduled. You could tell it had an effect, because the week new week 2 game in Jacksonville was a boring 16-13 loss (only 3 total points scored in 2nd half).

Then the Titans had a terrible time to get a bye in week 3. No rhythm at all, which led a 26-7 loss at Baltinore in week 4.

The Titans rebounded some by beating the Bucs and Lions in weeks 5 and 6. But then they had to travel to Pittsburgh, where they were killed 34-7.

In week 8, the Titans had a big comeback win over the Jags at home, and they were back to one game under .500. The season wasn't lost yet.

Unfortunately, week 9 was the MNF game against the Ravens at home. That game more than anything else killed the Titans hopes for the playoffs.

The Titans just could never get over .500. They kept winning one and losing the next. They did win 2 in a row to get to .500 with 2 weeks to go, but by that time the team was down to their scrubs. They lost the last two home games to Cleveland and Cincy, two teams they never would have lost to normally.

The good news is that the Titans are a bit younger than their 2001 counterparts. I do worry a little about KVB, but the rest are in pretty good shape. The running game should be a big strength this year, unlike the 2001 team. And the passing game has the potential to take off, like it also did in 2001.

The schedule does worry me, especially those road games. We might feel pretty good if the Titans are 3-3 going into the bye. And injuries are always a factor. The Titans were pretty lucky in 2008 with injuries, but they can strike at any time.

I really hope the Titans can make the playoffs 3 times in a row. I hope we can win the division for a 2nd time in a row. These are marks of the better teams in the NFL, and it is time for the Titans to join them.

Excellent read!

I think that Fisher has learned his lesson, and that's why Floyd Reese it's not the GM. Reindfelt has a more clinic eye, and he has proven that a good job at the desk, provides the team a more solid core on the field.

There are still very interesting young players, and we should wait to see how Hawkins unfolds. We have to wait and see if CJ cannot be cursed by the somophore year and he has all the abilities and pros to avoid a slump. Our OL and DL are still solid units, and I guess that Collins is also a QB that fits under Dinger's and Fisher's offensive philosophies.

Our DB's are a good group, and I still want to see a more solid group of LBs...Bulluck needs to be helped. Tulloch can be the answer, and the answers will come in 2009.

I really think that this team has the caliber to break that fine line, and that the young players that participated activly during the 2008 season will get benefited and hungrier from that experience.

Great post 309. The schedule does concern me too. I feel we are a bit deeper than that team. Only time will tell I guess but I think we are in better shape to handle injuries than we have been in the past. The secondary does concern me a bit as does experience at the WR position. Otherwise, I think we're good.

more so than the schedule im worried about albert haynesworth...just because "we think" it wont be that much of an issue it remains to be seen....i still remeber that stretch in 2007 that i never EVER want to see again

I'm not saying losing Al wasn't a loss, but we didn't see the dropoff in 2008 that we saw in 2007. In 2007 you could tell when Big Al wasn't in the game. You just didn't see that much of an appreciable difference last year.

yeah when guys said "ok we just have to get thru these games and al will be back" we dont know what will happen in a 19 game season

"Our guys" never said that nor do I believe they thought it.

really? we were 10-1 with him pretty healthy and 1-3 when he went out against houston...seems more than coincidental to me

i know he was back for the playoffs but he was rusty

Big Al played in rotation all year long. Name one game in the first 10 where you could tell when he wasn't on the field. There was one game in the first 10 where he only played 17 snaps and I'll bet you can't tell me which one it was.

EDIT: Albert wasn't the only reason we lost some games at the end of the season and you can't really count the Indy game.

kansas city? just a guess.......but my point is not that we cant MOMENTARILY replace him thru rotation or for a few games...but what happens when we dont have him ALL year...there will be injuries on the line and we will have to go EVEN deeper for replacements now

I am of the opinion that if we had paid him $80 million or $100 million, he would not be the player he was in 2008. It will be interesting to see what contribution he makes in Washington this season. I am willing to bet he will not play like a $100 million dollar man.

Nevertheless, our defense will definitelly miss him as they would miss anyone who played as he did in 2007 and 2008. We will not miss the Haynesworth of the previous four years which is closer to what I think he would have been for us this season and will be for Washington.

Who says he will not be suspended if he loses the $7 Million lawsuit to the young man he ran off of I-65 here and was charged with reckless driving. While I like Albert, there is still a dark side to him.

oh in no way am i saying we should have paid him...but regardless he isnt on our team in '09...TTP77 doesnt think it will be an issue...i hope he is right but besides injuries striking losing AL is still a concern for me

I didn't say it wouldn't be an issue. In fact, I said otherwise.

It's simply a fact that we didn't see the dropoff in 2008 that we saw in 2007. It remains to be seen how the defense will perform in the upcoming season.

I remember that first game of the 2001 season. Much like this year, the Titans opened on my birthday and I went to the game with my wife. As I recall, the Titans lost 2 members of the seconday for the season in that game setting an ominous tone for the season. It was then I knew my wife was bad luck :lol . I also remember that for the rest of the year my new word for the F--- word (the mother of all profanities) became Perry Phoenix (sp) and my new word for toast was DeRon Jenkins, I would say "I think I will have some Perry Phoenix'in butter on my Deron Jenkins for breakfast".

Looking back, I am pretty sure it was Bobby Myers (S) and Damion Sydney (CB) that were lost in that first game. I had forgotten that something must have happened to McNair as well, since he missed the Jaguars game two weeks later (though that was the only game that he missed).

Phenix was signed after two weeks after Carolina cut him. He had been a Titan the previous 3 years, but we must have cut him in the offseason. As it ended up, he never played again after that season.
