Geez, didn't know we didn't have a hockey thread going for the new season....

Guess it's the 9-3-1 start my Leafs have had, but hockey has finally become fun to watch again here.

Yeah no kidding, need to get Suter locked up, he's the big cog in all of this. Too bad we can't get a pure goal scorer too.

Bruins gave a nasty wake-up call to Toronto last nite - Leafs looked like a team that had been reading their press way too much and got a much deserved spanking. Probably for the best...

Rinne is just outstanding. Leafs have major injury issues - we're down our starting goalie, MacArthur, Grabovski, Armstrong, and last nite, Lombardi and Komisarek also went down and are going to miss weeks each. Going to be tough for them to stay afloat. That's 1/3 of their starting lineup out.

Lombardi going down..... practically warms my heart. Dude plays 2 games here, then miraculously is healed when he's traded to Toronto.

btw...I was surprised Rosehill was still in the game after McGratten beat the living hell out of him.....According to Crispy, McGratten delivered over 35 punches in that fight...

Yep, the playoffs will tick some off, you could have a LA/DET or PITT/BOS final.

I'm fine with that - just hate having the two Florida teams in our conference/division. I love the re-seed after the first two rounds. Home ice in the semifinal/finals should be based on regular season success and I'm glad they're going that way.

Should be a crazy atmosphere, and most likely the largest Hockey game ever played in terms of attendance.

The Preds are going all in this year by acquiring Paul Gaustad from the Buffalo Sabres and Andrei Kostitsyn from the Montreal Canadiens.

I wonder if the co-Assistant to the Assistant GMs Suter and Weber will sign their contracts now? I'm very doubtful about Suter, he seems to want to be gone. Weber maybe, but not too optimistic about him either. Hope they keep at least one of them. I'm still pist about their antics at the All Star Event.

I'm not impressed with Pekka latley. He is very streaky. I'd rather keep Shea if I had the choice. Suter is good but is replaceable. Shea is a complete beast. I hope Rads plays well but more importantly I hope we have all great lines now.

Yes. Suter UFA, Weber RFA which is why most pundits think they'll let Suter walk and lock up Weber longterm. We'll see.

If they keep Radulov long term, and that is a BIG if, it will not hurt so much to let Suter or Weber go. Having Peks, Rads and Suter/Weber locked up for awhile is a damn good combination. I'm not sure if they have the cap space for all four anyways, the rest of the roster would be farily depleted if so.

The line of thinking is that you will lose Suter, keep Weber and Radulov goes back to the KHL next season. I just can't understand why on earth Suter was ever allowed to even get close to UFA. He will be a Flyer or Red Wing next season for sure.

If things had gone one way last night (Detroit winning, Nashville and Chicago both losing in regulation), Saturday's games would have been meaningless. Instead (Nashville winning, Detriot losing in regulation, Chicago losing in a shootout), Saturday will be very exciting.

Current standings:
#4 Nashville - 102 points
#5 Detroit - 101
#6 Chicago - 99 points

If the Preds can just get a point at Colorado, they clinch the #4 seed since they have the ROW tiebreaker over Detroit. They also get that seed if Detroit loses in regulation or OT.
If Chicago can win at Detroit in regulation, the Blackhawks get the #5 seed due to head-head points over Detroit.

Ideally, the Preds are better off playing the Blackhawks in the first round, but at least home ice is looking really good now.

Jones31
04-06-2012, 08:51 AM

You don't Detroit this yr IMO. Chicago is ripe for the picking, not nearly as strong in net or defensively. I really feel this Wing team has done a great job readying themselves for the post-season.

Jones31

Chicago is doing pretty well right now (6-1-3) while DET is treading water (4-4-2) over the last 10.
As long as Crawford isn't in net for the Hawks, they have a shot.

You got your wish. Preds #4 - Detroit #5 thank to the Hawks shootout win today.

Detroit does appear weaker than the Hawks right now, and their home ice advantage that they had early in the year is gone. Thew Preds really need to win those first two games though.

One thing I find fascinating about the playoffs this year is the dearth of home wins. Home teams are only 9-19 (32%) through Wednesday night, and every team has at least one home loss.

Home teams were under .500 the last two first rounds as well, but not as bad as this year.

The team prior to the trade deadline was painful to watch. Our offense got a huge boost then though and combine that with Quick and you have a real tough team to beat in the playoffs.

Kings have a chance to take out the top 3 seeds in the west now.

If they can manage to win this series and the Rangers get to the finals then they would then have a chance to also take out the top seed in the east.

That would have to be one of the greatest playoff runs ever. Getting ahead of myself now though. This should be a real tough series against the Coyotes.
