View Full Version : How to look at Jeff Fisher's career?

On TitansCentral, there are some pretty serious Fisher critics. They think he is a mediocre coach who has only 5 winning seasons out of 14, and without the MCM, would only have 2 playoff wins.

If that is all you were told of Coach Fisher, then I could see some negativity. But I see him in a completely different way.

I see only 4 losing seasons out of 14, with only two in double-digit losses. I see a coach with 28 more wins than losses for a respectable .557 winning percentage. I see a coach that did make it to a Super Bowl.

The biggest thing I see is a coach that meets or exceeds expectations almost every year. After taking over the Oilers, he went 7-9, 8-8, 8-8, and 8-8 with basically no real home field advantage. He was just trying to keep the team together before reaching the promised land of the new stadium in Nashville.

Then we made the playoffs 4 out of 5 years, winning 5 playoff games in that span.

After that, was the rebuilding process. But once the team hit bottom with a 4-12 record in 2005, it has been on the upswing. An amazing 8-8 season in 2006. An exhausting 10-6 season in 2007 that ended against a tough team on the road. A NFL-best 13-3 season in 2008 that ended in Murphy's Law fashion against the Ravens.

Now Fisher has a tough job this upcoming season. He just lost his best defensive player and his defensive coordinator. The Titans have 4 road games in places they have never won as Titans. The Colts are hungry to win back the South, and the Patriots will likely be a top AFC team again. And the Titans will be expected to perform at a level like last year and be at least a wildcard team.

This is a big "legacy" season for Coach Fisher. Can he take a very promising young core of players and maintain a high level of success. Teams like the Colts, Patriots, Eagles, and Steelers are able to get a strong team and keep them strong. Can the Titans do the same?

I don't think that you can look past longevity in this league. Nor can you look past Bud Adams and this franchise's history with head coaches. I think that the fact that Fisher is the longest tenured coach in the league says a lot for the job that he does and for the organiztions trust in him.

Someone on that site once asked how long would I want Fisher as a coach. I said I would keep him until ticket sales really suffered (started to get blackouts). At that point, something probably would need to happen.

While I would love a Super Bowl championship, I just don't see that as the only requirement to keep a coach or not. If he goes 10 more years without a championship, but he still has a good team that is in the playoffs more years than not, I wouldn't want to get rid of him. I just don't see coaching as the the reason we don't have a championship. It is a factor, but good coaching by Fisher and his staff is a lot more beneficial than harmful to the team.

Also, some people don't realize what a great coaching staff we have. When a head coach does get fired, usually the staff is replaced as well. We can already see in Denver the chaos that can cause. Losing Fisher would be a lot more than replacing one guy.

i am not sure how a fan of the titans/oiler can say he is not THE MAN! sure being critical of him for some of the calls made on the field. but how can anyone say he is not one of the top hc's in the league. i think that any coach that can have that kind of longevity and stability and exceeds expectations every year, is in my book as a top 5 hc.

fisher deserves a sb title and hopefully when he decides to retire more people will be less critical of and will think he is hof worthy.

:toast to our great coach.

Coach Fisher is by far one of the best coaches in pro sports. Maybe Bill Bilichick or the NBA's Phil Jackson has something on Jeff Fisher.

jeff fisher is the Titans

The Titans will be around long after he is gone, but he is a very major part of this organization.

Nashville is a interesting city for coaches. We have the longest tenured NFL coach, one of the longest tenured NHL coaches, and some of the longest tenured SEC coaches at Vandy (Stallings and Johnson).

There is a lot of stability in this city for coaches.

We've covered similar topics before. The jist, from my opinion, is this:

Jeff Fisher has held absolutely horrible teams into the almost respectable category, bad teams into mediocrity, and decent/half-good teams into winners.

He does more with less.

The problem is, when you compare the overall talent the Titans have had during Fishers entire tenure, compared to most other NFL teams, the Titans have had far and away fewer stars and big-time talent.

We have a good amount of talent right now, but we've never had the Ladanian Tomlinson, the Tom Brady, the Peyton Manning, for example. Albert Haynesworth developed into a star, but it was a long process to get there.

To summarize, I think Jeff Fisher does a good job as coach, but I think this organization, when looked at overall for the last 15 years, has done absolutely LOUSY talent-wise.

Although I'm not always a big fan of his style of offense (Fisherball), I think he is the right fit for the organization. Like Titans and Turtles said, he makes a lot out of a little. That suits Bud Adams down to the ground.

in a lot of ways due to the move fisher is in a pretty unique situaiton as a coach.

he became the coach in a time of turmoil within the teams leadership.
not soon afterward he went from the pan into the fire with all the drama that revolved around the move.

for something like 3 to 4 years in a lot ways the titans didnt even have a true home field.
seen the photos of the last year of the oilers in houston.
the whole thing that the team moved earlier then planned directly into the mess with memphis.
an organization for awhile being run out of trailers.
i still think it is a great coaching job he pulled out 8/8 seasons out of those years.

and later not only did the titans have some talent issues in 2001, 2002, 2005 they had massive injury issues.

in two of those years not only did they have a lot of injuries they also didnt have the cap money to bring in other players.

but even in 2001 the team stayed competitive till the end of the season and managed upset wins against the raiders and the packers.

I think Fisher is a great coach, but the scouts for the Titans are pretty bad.

Also, Fisher has a tendency to be stubborn and remain loyal a little too long to some of his veterans.

Fisher isn't in the elite category, but he's not in the scrubs either.

really it helps to look at the scouts over a period of different years.
and even then they were uneven with certain positions.
bad at wr but pretty good at some others like the lines.
though i have to wonder if the lines how a lot to munch and washburn.

the titans for a long time had a very good head of scouting who died about 2001
(need to look it up)

a lot of the success during that period that floyd got credit for i think a lot could have gone to him.

after that starting with 2003 they had some bad drafts.

then in 2005 they got better again.

A good career that would be capped by a Super Bowl win. Would probably make him a lock for the Hall of Fame.

I think Fisher has done an incredible job with what he's been given. While I do agree that sometimes the play calling can be predictable, you can't deny that he has kept the Titans competetive. Some will say it doesn't matter without the Superbowl Win. I say it does matter. Look at teams like the Lions and the Bengals (just to name a couple). At least we've not had to go through those kind of dry spells.
