CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- After seeing fans jam London's Wembley Stadium the past two years to watch an NFL game, the league is considering sending a second regular-season contest overseas in time for the 2010 season.

NFL commissioner Roger Goodell said Tuesday that the second game also could be played in London or another location in the United Kingdom. The issue will be discussed at next week's league meetings and could be included in a larger plan to add up to two regular-season games to the NFL schedule.

"The fan reaction we've had in London has been extraordinary. We would like to feed that passion," Goodell said after speaking at the Charlotte Touchdown Club. "We have a great fan base in the UK. There have been discussions of taking the second game and playing it in another market in the UK. That's something that we'll evaluate."

I seem to remember that when the NFL agreed to do foreign regular season games, there would be 3 years of a single game, and after that it would be two games a year. So this is right on schedule.

However, I am still against this, especially in today's economy. While the owner doesn't suffer, the people that work on gamedays certainly do (as well as ticket holders getting the package reduced by a game).

But Goodell isn't dumb. I think he wants the backlash so he can promote his 17 or 18 game schedule. Fans won't complain as much if they still get 8 regular season home games, with a 9th game in a foreign country. I just hate this slippery slope the NFL is on.

What about Mexico City?? There must be more NFL fans in the city alone than there are in the whole of the UK.

What exactly is the NFL trying to achieve in Europe anyway? It's going to be a marginal sport over there no matter what they do.

They are trying to bring in more European money into the NFL coffers. The NFL sees that the NBA, NHL, and MLB have a large international presence, and the NFL wants a bigger piece of the pie.

I know... They could change it so that in the NFL, instead of passing or running to advance the ball, you kick a round ball towards the end zone. But, instead of a traditional end zone, they could use a netted goal with someone like a safety trying to block any kicks from going into that goal. Maybe that would make the NFL more popular throughout the world.

Which reminds me... Why hasnt anyone done the "pull your shirt over your head and run around with your arms out like a plane" endzone celebration? TO? Ocho?

The NFL should be eliminated from export list (http://tennessean.com/article/20090517/COLUMNIST0202/905170364)

Nice job by Climer :thumbsup

Why not just move the whole damn NFL to Europe?

My dream scenario for one of the European games. Fans really get into a game and riot afterwards and leaves the NFL with a big fat shiner and the owners decide they want no part of it, much to Goodell's consternation.
