View Full Version : 2014 CWS Championship - Vandy vs. Virginia

The biggest moment in Vandy sports history starts tonight. Vandy has their first legitimate chance at a NCAA championship in a men's sport. They just have to beat Virginia 2 out of 3.

Buehler pitches tonight and Beede pitches tomorrow for Vandy.

During the regular season, Vandy started off strong but really struggled in SEC play. They lost a series to UT for the first time in a long time, and Beede couldn't seem to win any Friday starts (and he still was a MLB first round draft pick). When they barely beat UT in the SEC tourney and lost their next two, I wasn't even sure they would get to host a regional.

However, their RPI was very strong, and they did get to host (and the matchups were easier than a lot of regionals). Then Stanford upset national seed Indiana, giving Vandy the right to host the Super Regional. It took 3 games, but Vandy won it to go to the CWS.

Beating their main non-conference rival Louisville in game one of the CWS was huge. They jumped on UC Irvine early to win game 2. Right before game 3, it was announced that our starting 3rd baseman broke NCAA rules and was suspended the rest of the CWS. In game 3, everything that could go wrong for Vandy did in the first two innings, and they couldn't make any dent in the 4-0 hole.

So it came down to Saturday night against Texas. Vandy is up 2-0 after three, but they give up a bases loaded single to make is 2-2 in the 4th. It could have been much worse, but Vandy freshman reliever Stone induced a bases-loaded double play to end the inning. Vandy scored again in the 5th, but Texas got it right back in the 6th.

Stone shut down Texas the rest of the way, but Vandy couldn't make much headway until the 10th. After 2 outs, we got a hit. Then we put in a pinch hitter, who was walked. The next batter had zero hits this whole CWS, but he was the one hit instead, loading the bases. Up comes Tyler Campbell, our 9th hitter and the player who replaced the 3rd baseman. He chops the ball toward the shortstop, and the shortstop has to run up and make a desperate throw to first (all the other runners were at their next base safely). But Tyler beats the throw by less than a second, winning the game!

Now it comes down to Virginia (the highest seed going into the CWS) and Vandy the next few nights. Neither team has played for a CWS championship, so a new champion will be crowned.

This is the 7th straight year that a SEC team has made the championship series, winning 3 of them. The ACC has a huge drought, last winning this in 1955 (Wake Forest). Virginia is still the favorite, but Vandy is definitely a match for them.

Go Dores!!!!!

What a crazy game yesterday. Vandy falls behind 2-0 early in the game, and the first 6 Vandy batters are retired in order.

But then the Virginia ace pitcher couldn't find the strike zone. 5 walks, 1 hit batsman, 1 error, and 2 doubles later, it was 9-2 after three innings.

However, Virginia would not go away quietly. 3 runs in the 4th, 2 runs in the 6th, and 1 run in the 8th cut the lead to one. Vandy had to play terrific defense in the 8th to only give up one after the first two batters reached base safely.

Vandy had a 1-2-3 9th to win the game. Since the new best of 3 format was implemented, the game 1 winner has won 9 of the 11 championships. However, Virginia has not lost back-to-back games all year, and they definitely outhit Vandy badly last night. First round draft pick Tyler Beede takes the mound for Vandy, though he had been unpredictable all year.

One game for all the marbles. That wiry lefty for Virginia was really tough last night.

Vandy can never make anything easy. :unsure

I just hate it because it will be one of Vandy's greatest triumphs or one of their biggest defeats. It reminds me a lot of the Titans Super Bowl.

They have nothing to be ashamed of even if they lose. It's a great run either way.

True. However, it is like the Titans and the Super Bowl. The Titans had a terrific run that year, and we fans are proud of it. But not winning it when we were so close still is bitter, especially since the Titans haven't really come close since then.

Vandy has had some top ranked teams not make it to the CWS. That had a pretty good team make it to the final four of the CWS but no further. To win one game of the championship and not win it all would still be so deflating and make us Vandy fans think of SOV (same old Vandy).

I just want a championship so badly, just like all the other SEC teams (except for Miss State, which has zero).

Vandy wins!!!!!! I have been posting all night long on the Vandymania board. I don't think any win in any sport has felt so good. What a great job by these guys and coach Corbin.

You are so greedy. The 2007 Vanderbilt's womens bowling National championship wasn't enough???? Geez.

It's funny how much that 2007 bowling championship has been mentioned this week. There is probably no one that can name any of the champions since then. ;)

Congrats to Vandy and it's fans. I pulled hard against them since the SEC tournament but they defied all odds and won it. Listening to Cobrin on the 3HL, I was impressed with what a classy guy he is.

Congrats Vandy and their fans. Puts Vandy in the National spot light for a few hours.

I went to the celebration last night on campus, and it was a lot of fun. Governor Haslam, Chancellor Zeppos, AD Williams, and a city councilman representing Mayor Dean (who was on vacation) were all there.

The Tennessean reported it was about 4000 fans, but I just know that it was packed. :)

The paper has some nice photos from when the bus came in, as well as the celebration. I am in a few of them, with one good shot of my face (I am in a black shirt with a white hat). http://www.tennessean.com/picture-gallery/sports/college/vanderbilt/2014/06/26/vanderbilt-celebration/11435625/
