the new rules was passed this year..

oh yeah..

"We don't in any way as a committee try to pass rules for player safety that affect negatively the game," said Rich McKay, co-chairman of the NFL's competition committee. "What we do is pass rules to try and make the game safer. Teams will adjust, coaches will adjust. The game will be just fine. We have to be proactive in dealing with player safety."

i have a feeling that above mostly adresses the controversey caused by a rule a lot people have nicknamed the brady/manning rule.

While not an actual rule change requiring a vote from NFL owners, the league also ruled that defenders who are knocked to the ground (and hasn't been blocked or fouled directly into the quarterback) can not lunge or dive at the quarterback's lower legs if the play is still ongoing. The change comes about one season removed from 2007 NFL MVP Tom Brady's injury in the season's first game that resulted from such a play.

some of the other new , clarification , changes to the rules..

helmet-to-helmet protection, it was determined that the initial contact to the head of a defenseless receiver will draw a 15-yard penalty.
the clarification..
Although initial helmet-to-helmet contact with a defenseless receiver was already prohibited, the rewritten rule expands prohibited initial contact to include the forearm or shoulder in the head or neck area .

this rule change came about due to a hit on pat's welker..
from the globe

Welker was forced to leave the Patriots' 33-10 loss to the Steelers Nov. 30 after he was blasted by Clark on an uncatchable ball late in the third quarter.

Matt Cassel's pass was tipped, and as Welker completed his route and looked for the ball, Clark launched himself and struck Welker under the chin with a shoulder/forearm. Clark was penalized but not fined because the hit was deemed legal, if late.

. An illegal blindside block will also garner a 15-yard penalty.
..
blind side hits have been allowed with the exception that they must be above the waist, not helmet to helmet and not in the back.
now it is a 15 yard penalty to hit another player shoulder to head if they are not looking.

==========

kicking team can't have more than five players bunched together to pursue an onsides kick. A violation will bring about a five-yard penalty. Also, no blocking wedge of more than two players will be allowed, with a 15-yard penalty to be assessed to the violating team.

=======

allowing video replays for a loose ball that could either be a fumble or an incomplete pass

=================

voted to eliminate a second onsides kick. A second kick had been awarded following an initial illegal attempt. Possession will now be awarded to the receiving team. In addition, for fumbles and laterals that go out of bounds, the clock will start when the referee signals ready for play.

--------------

The league tinkered with the draft order for playoff teams as well. Order will now be determined based on where teams were eliminated in the postseason as opposed to their regular-season record. It takes effect in 2010.

================

A waiver period during the first two weeks of training camp was established and the beginning of the postseason waiver period will now take effect following the final postseason game. Previously it began after the Pro Bowl.

The kickoff rules suck more than anything... No wedge means good luck with kick return TDs and no bunching means virtually no recovering onside kicks.

The Brady rule is going to very hard for players to adapt to.

The Brady rule is going to very hard for players to adapt to.

Players are aready penalized for going in to the knees of a QB already (as KVB is well aware of). I am really not sure what this rule really changes.

The league also voted for a couple of equiptment changes this year in anticipation of greater player safety. The NFL will now use a newly designed football that promises to reduce hand injuries:

Alos by, the 2010 season, all fields will be resurfaced using the latest in impact resistant technology:

I know it'd slow the game down some, but I sure hope they at least consider using replay if necessary for some of the head-contact fouls. I guarantee it's going to affect a game at least once where a head-contact call is made that is completely bogus.

And then, watch out...

Why not just have the QB's wear flags and have done with it !
