Nate Washington’s fifth season in the National Football League will kick off Sept. 10 in Pittsburgh with the defending Super Bowl champion Steelers playing in the annual league-opening primetime Thursday night contest before a national TV audience.
Yet, the speedy wide receiver’s viewpoint at Heinz Field will look a little different from his four years spent as a member of the Steelers.
Washington, a Toledo native, will return as a visitor to the Steelers home turf after signing an unrestricted free agent contract in March with the Tennessee Titans.
The Scott High graduate, who caught 104 passes for 1,705 yards (12 touchdowns) during his days as a Steeler, has come a long way from making it into the NFL as an undrafted free agent out of Tiffin University in 2005.
He’s been a member of two Super Bowl championship teams in four seasons, including last season’s 27-23 win over the Arizona Cardinals in Super Bowl XLII.
Washington, who led the AFC with a 17.8 yards-per-catch average in 2006, heads into training camp with the Titans as one of Tennessee’s biggest offseason additions.
Washington is expected to provide the Titans with the kind of deep-threat capabilities Tennessee lacked a year ago.
Prior to leaving Toledo for training camp in Tennessee, Washington answered some questions from Blade sports writer Don Emmons about his career in the NFL.
