Unhappy Harry Galbreath, former UT o-line star, passed away

Legendary Tennessee football coach Johnny Majors once said Harry Galbreath was the best offensive lineman he ever coached.

Judging by Galbreath’s resume, it would be difficult to argue against Majors.

Galbreath, a Clarksville High product who played in the NFL with the Dolphins, Packers and Jets after an All-American career with the Vols, died early Tuesday morning in Mobile, Ala., according to a member of his family.

Galbreath’s All-American career with the Vols launched him into the NFL where he was an eighth round selection by the Dolphins in the 1988 NFL Draft. Galbreath spent five years in Miami, being named to the NFL All-Rookie team during the ’88 season. From there Galbreath played three seasons with the Packers, and two with the Jets before retiring after the 1997 season.

He left the pro ranks for the college level, coaching at Austin Peay (1998-99), Tennessee State (2000-04) and Hampton (2005-06).

Galbreath returned to Knoxville in ’07 serving as the associate strength and conditioning coach through last season.

Harry Galbreath is one of the biggest reasons I became a huge UT fan in the 80's and into the 90's. As most of you know, I grew up in Clarksville, and I went to the same high school as he did, though he graduated about 2 years before I was there. When he went to UT and became a star o-lineman, I was so proud that a Clarksvillian could do so well.

He still may be the greatest football player to ever come out of Clarksville, and my prayers and thoughts are with his family and friends. To die realitively young at 45 is saddening, though he definitely had a memorable life.

I remember Harry well. One of the better guards UT has put out.

    RIP
