Default Titans have a playoff shot

If you look at the standings, the Colts and Texans are 6-4, while the Titans are 5-5. While the Titans do not control their own destiny (if the Titans win out and the Colts win all but the Titans game, the Colts are still division champs due to division record), they are pretty close.

    Remaining schedules:
    Titans - Jags, @Colts, @Raiders, Texans, Saints, @Texans
    Colts - @Texans, Titans, @Bucs, @Saints, Panthers, @Jaguars
Texans - Colts, Patriots, Broncos, @Titans, @Bucs, Titans

The main key to the Titans playoff run is winning the four remaining division games. That would at least make it a two team race between the Titans and Colts, and give us a chance at 9-7. A Titans win over the Raiders or Saints makes it 10-6.

The Titans are also thick into the wild card hunt as well. The Bills are two games ahead (plus the tiebreaker) at 7-3, but the Titans are just one game behind the Raiders and Steelers. To get the wildcard, the Titans really need to finish at least 9-7 with a win over the Raiders.

Hopefully the Titans will see the return of Walker, Davis, and Casey after this bye. Hopefully Succop has been getting extra practice in to shake off the rust (3 missed field goals and a missed extra point). Hopefully the coaching staff continues to evolve with their play calling.

There is a chance, though it basically requires winning three of the next four games. If they lose either one of the first two, it is over. It will be interesting to see what this team is made of.

    Important games this week:
    Titans over Jaguars
Texans over Colts (mainly because we play the Texans twice)
Bengals over Steelers (It would be shocking for the 0-10 Bengals to win that game, but it is at home, and crazy things can happen)
Jets over Raiders (It is in NY and the Raiders have only won one road game this year)
Broncos over Bills (the Bills have a big lead over the Titans, but they have four very tough games after this one. A slip up against the Broncos helps.)

Good comeback by the Texans last night, though the officials screwed up yet again at the end (Texans fumbled and Colts recovered, but officials didn't call it).

Now there is one scenario where the Titans win a tiebreaker over the Colts. If the Titans win all 4 division games and the Colts lose at Jacksonville in week 17, the Titans would have a better division record than the Colts (4-2 vs. 3-3).

The Titans and Jets won, while the Steelers barely beat the winless Bengals.

    Division standings:
    Texans 7-4
    Colts 6-5
    Titans 6-5
    Jags 4-7

We now control our own destiny to win the division (though it is highly unlikely to win out). If we did win out, the Titans just have the better record than the others. If the Titans win the rest of their division games and lose against the Raiders or Saints, the Titans would need the Colts to lose one more game (we still would have the tiebreaker over the Texans).

    Wild card standings:
    Bills 8-3
    Steelers 6-5
    Colts 6-5
    Raiders 6-5
    Titans 6-5
    Browns 5-6

The Bills likely can't be overcome since the Titans don't have the tiebreaker over them.

Steelers schedule - Browns, @Cardinals, Bills, @Jets, @Ravens. They should lose at least 2, and could lose them all.

Colts - Titans, @Bucs, @Saints, Panthers, @Jags. Titans have to beat them, and hopefully they lose at least one NFC game.

Raiders - @Chiefs, Titans, Jags, @Chargers, @Broncos. Hopefully they lose to the Chiefs and the Titans beat them to take the tiebreaker.

Browns - @Steelers, Bengals, @Cardinals, Ravens, @Bengals. Titans have the tiebreaker, and the Ravens should beat them. As long as they finish no better than 9-7, they shouldn't be a threat to the Titans, but if the Titans slip up, then Browns could make the playoffs.

    Important games this upcoming weekend:

    Titans over Colts
    Patriots over Texans
    Browns over Steelers
    Chiefs over Raiders

If those four results happen, the Titans take over the #6 seed (for now) and would be in a tie for the division lead with the Texans.

However, a loss to the Colts makes everything much harder. The best bet if that happens is for the Colts to win the division and for the Titans to fight the Steelers, Raiders, Texans, and Browns for the wild card.

The good news is that the Titans won and the Raiders lost again. The bad news is that the Steelers won (though I still think they lose at least two more) and the Texans looked really good in beating the Patriots.

The Titans do control their own destiny and would win the division by winning out. But the schedule is killer.
@Raiders (6-6) - the Raiders haven't looked good lately, but the Titans just don't play well in California. Definitely a must win to make the playoffs.
Texans (8-4) - It is scary what that offense did to the best defense in football, as well as frustrating Brady all game. It's going to take an amazing game by the Titans to win.
Saints (10-2) - The Saints may be in first place in the NFC when we play them (they play the 49ers Sunday for first). This is one game I expect to lose, but the Titans have had good luck against the Saints in the past. And maybe the weather will be terrible to keep it mostly a ground game.
@Texans (8-4) - The Titans have to beat the Texans at least once to have a chance. Could be the Sunday night flex game if it determines the division.

I love how the Titans are playing right now, but I don't see us on the level of the Texans and Saints yet. I have a bad feeling that we will finish 9-7 for a fourth straight year and miss the playoffs to the Colts or Steelers.

The playoff scenarios are quite complicated right now. The easiest one is that the Titans win the division if they win out.

10-6 wins the division as long as they sweep the Texans AND (Colts lose a game OR Texans don't lose any other games). So we benefit from a 3-way tie (we win best head-to-head-to-head win percentage), but lose to a 2-way tiebreaker to the Colts.

10-6 also wins the division with a loss to the Texans, but it requires the Colts to lose at least one game and the Texans to lose to both the Broncos and Bucs. (Texans would own the division record tiebreaker)

10-6 gets a wildcard if the Steelers lose at least 2 and the Colts lose at least 1 (this assumes the Titans lose to the Texans once, since any other loss goes back to the first scenario)

9-7 has a variety of scenarios, but they require the Steelers and Colts to have a worse record and pretty much requires a win over the Raiders (and the Raiders to be 9-7 or worse).

    Playoff scenarios for the Titans.

    1. Win out- division champs
    2. Beat the Texans twice but lose to Saints - division champs because of Colts loss today

    3. Beat the Texans once and the Saints. Division champs if Texans lose to the Bucs on the road (better record). Wild card if the Steelers lose twice (Steelers would own better conference record in a tie).

    4. If the Titans lose two of the three, there is still a chance, but we would need the Steelers to lose out and the Colts to lose one more. (The Titans might make the playoffs if they lose to the Texans once and the Saints and the Steelers lose just 2 based on strength of victory).

Thank goodness the Steelers lost. The AFC basically has two spots left with three teams in real contention.

Titans win the division if they win their last two AND the Texans lose at the Bucs. The Bucs are on a four game winning streak and playing good football, so they have a decent chance. And we know the Titans can beat the Texans if they limit their mistakes.

Titans can win the 2nd wild card a few ways.
    1. Win out AND the Steelers lose at least one (@Jets, @Ravens) Jets have extra time to prepare because of playing Thursday. The big problem is that the Ravens clinch the #1 seed with a win @Browns on Sunday, so they may rest starters against the Steelers.

    2. Lose to the Saints and beat the Texans AND Steelers lose at least one AND Colts lose at least one. Titans would get in with a Strength of Victory tiebreaker.

    3. Beat the Saints and lose to the Texans AND Steelers lose both games AND Colts lose at least one. This is the least likely scenario.

Unless Kansas City loses out (very unlikely), the Titans would host the Bills if we win the division or travel to the Chiefs (or possibly Patriots) as the wild card.

Colts lost to the Saints, so that takes care of one part of the equation. It's basically a three way race with 2 spots between the Titans, Texans, and Steelers.

What is interesting is that the Texans-Bucs game is Saturday. If the Texans win, it almost makes our game with the Saints meaningless. The only advantage to winning is to prevent the Raiders from having a shot at the playoffs.

If the Texans and Titans both win this week, then we still need to either (beat the Texans and have the Steelers lose at least one) OR have the Steelers lose twice.

If the Texans win and the Titans lose, then a few things can happen.
    1. If the Titans beat the Texans and the Steelers lose at least one, the Titans are in.
    2. If the Titans lose to the Texans, then we need the Steelers to lose twice and the Colts to lose at least one more. So we can get in at 8-8.
    3. If the Titans lose out, the Steelers lose out, and the Colts win out, the Steelers get in due to the Colts eliminating the Titans.
    4. If the Titans lose out, the Steelers lose out, Colts win out, and Raiders win out, the Raiders make the playoffs (Colts eliminate the Titans again).

No matter what, the Colts are eliminated with their loss last night. But considering they play the Panthers and Jags, they could win out.

Hopefully, the Texans lose Saturday, giving the Titans every incentive to win Sunday. But it wouldn't be the worst strategy to rest Henry (and maybe some of the other injured players) this week if the Texans win.

Also very important is when the Nashville Predators win on Saturday nights, the Titans win on Sunday. If the Preds lose on Saturday then the Titans lose. Itís been that way almost all season. Letís all hope for a Predatorís win tonight!

Bucs looked lost, but they just tied the game at 17 right before half thanks to a Watson pick.

Darn Bucs receiver dropped a 4th down completion that would have set up at least a tying field goal. Then Winston threw his 4th pick of the game on the final real drive.

Basically that means the game tomorrow does nothing except decide whether the Raiders have a shot at the playoffs or not. It would be nice to win, but it barely improves our chances to get a wild card.

    Here is what is left:

Titans beat the Texans and the Steelers lose either game - Titans in the wild card
Titans beat the Saints, lose to the Texans, and the Steelers lose both games - Titans in the wild card
Titans lose both, Steelers lose both, Colts lose one, and Raiders lose one - Titans in the wild card

    Steelers play @Jets, and @Ravens.
    Colts play Panthers, and @Jags
    Raiders play @Chargers, and @Broncos

Games that are meaningful this weekend.
    Titans over Saints
Browns over Ravens, Patriots over Bills (to force the Ravens to play their starters against the Steelers to keep home field advantage. Also a Pats win prevents the Texans from being the #2 seed)
    Panthers over Colts
    Chargers over Raiders.

Unfortunately, the Texans will have something to play for next week no matter what the Chiefs do. If the Chiefs have one more loss, the Texans can move up to the #3 seed (and higher if the Bills beat the Pats).

    The two scenarios are set.

    1. Beat the Texans.
    2. Lose, Steelers lose, and Colts lose or tie

The last wild card will be the Titans, Steelers, or Raiders.

Well just checked what the Boys out in Vegas are saying about the Titans vs Texans.

It opened as a pick'em, but now it's leaning Titans -5, so they feeling Houston's going to roll out the welcome mat and allow the Titans into the playoffs.

If I'm Houston looking at match-ups in playoffs, I want Titans playing Kansas City over a Pittsburgh , Titans give KC a battle. Pittsburgh offense is hurting.

What is interesting is that the Chargers-Chiefs game is still at noon. If the Chiefs can get a big early lead, the Texans will have nothing to play for. However if the Chiefs lose, the Texans are playing for the #3 seed and the right to likely face the Steelers or Raiders (which would be much easier than the Bills).

I don't think Houston really cares if the Chiefs face the Steelers/Titans/Raiders. They wouldn't face the Chiefs till the AFC Championship.
